I find it very funny that here in Venezuela straight guys use the spanish word for gay (Marico) when they talk to each other. It's something like when you say "dude", well we use "marico". You only do it with people you're somewhat close to, it would be kind of rude to call an stranger that.
So there still can be a negative connotation to it if you want to but it's usually a very common word. It's kind of funny because I use it with my straight friends but not with the gay ones (not that I have many), somehow it's a very "straight" thing to do.
Girls use the term Marica a lot when talking to each other too.
