should be a film choice

de' Palma's best film (followed by Carrie) and just fucking awesome all around.

I'll be in for the films I can stream through Netflix or Hulu Plus; unfortunately, Touch of Evil is not one of those films.

I do plan to say in the OP of each thread where the film is available, and will say if it is on hulu or netflix. I know that the first film isn't available via streaming, but I will keep streaming in mind when I am selecting future films.

Some of the scenes with Orson Wells in that movie, I just can't stop laughing. A lot of moments where the camera is doing a close up on his face and he's sweating fucking bullets.

I think the best way to go about this is to have a list of people who choose the movie every week and just start from there.

How do we want to start this? Do we stick with English movie only or foreign movie that isn't English (like Japanese, French, Chinese, etc)? Also, what about movie that is animated but more into mature area? Do we let them in also? We do need to set some kind of rules of what movie we should discuss.

To pauljeremiah

Can you give me a very brief synopsis of this movie to get me interest in?

What if we alternate with contemporary and classic stuff? Like, something Pre-80s one week, post-80s the next. I dunno, just spitballing ideas here.

We could really have a giant rotation of eras/genres/styles..ect

The options are endless for such a thing really.

A whole month to genre breaking films would be awesome or even if there were like a pack of films (3 at most) that had intertwining themes going through them all.

im in but we need structure. Like we cant just shout out movies we need one person in charge each week and a list of people involved so we know who is next. Stuff like that. Someone get on that, im too busy with a newborn to do all that right now.

I was thinking of doing something like that, like a month of Noire, or Classic gangster films, Hong Kong Action films etc.

Why don't the OP have some kind of system where here, he will list 5 movies that he want us to choose which one of them should be shown for next week. From here we can put from highest to lowest which one should be shown for next week. Once the movie is agree on within a certain amount of days, the top movie will be shown for next week while the other 4 will put back in this big list of movies the OP is interested.

I'm planning to be in charge of this for the first couple of weeks till we have built a bed rock amount of posters per film.

the structure is simple, I pick a film on Sunday, I make an OT for it, I include links on where to get the film (both physical and streaming), you watch, then post your thoughts in the OT, the following Sunday I pick another film.

interesting idea, will try to work in something like that in the coming weeks.

The last film club died quickly because the choosen films were ones that most people already knew. To avoid that happening again i think it would be nice if there was an alternative to choose from each week. A film that is similarely themed but more obscure. I think it would keep more people interested to participate especialy the ones who have already seen a lot of films.

Hmm....then we need to open up the movie list not only English movie but also other language and also maybe animation type movie. Don't care if the movie is bad or great for me as it will help us to understand why the movie is great or what improving is needed for the bad movie.

I think some noirs like detour, kc confidental, out of the past etc would be some good choices, especially since you can get a number of them for free legally via archives.

Who says the alternative choice has to be a bad movie? We have enough experts on this board who can make recommendations for good alternatives that are just not as much known.

For example this weeks movie is Touch of Evil. The alternative movie could be either Border Incident or The Hitch-Hiker which both are also noirs that play near or beyond the Mexican border.

I'm in, but think that there definitely should be a healthy mix: old and new, drama and comedy, live action and animation, etc. Hell, it'd even be nice to see the occasional well done action film pop up. Not saying this is what you have planned, but if this ends up basically being just black & white films from the AFI's top 100 I could see myself getting bored pretty quickly.

How about experiential movie? They're quite a bit of them and I don't know if they're easy to find in Netflix or Amazon. I know couple of them that I am interested to post here.

The thing I remember most in that movie is Charlton Heston playing a Mexican.

Interesting idea.
It seems to me like there should be a date when people talk about the flick though. Like, since it is week one, say "At the end of this many days, we'll discuss it."

It looks like people are just saying that they will comment on it in a couple days or whenever, but if people are just posting whenever, then it gets hard for random people to check in on the thread. Unless everyone's posts are nothing but spoilers for 50-year-old movies.

Just an idea. Wanted to post in here instead of shitting up the new thread.

that's a very valid point, let's say that the film in picked on Sunday and the discussion can start on Wednesday.

I just went through this list. I hate pretentious lists like this. 250+ spots before a film from 00's and like maybe 2 films from the 90s within that 250.

I know I'm on the opposite spectrum of this list as I know I wouldn't enjoy a good chunk of those movies listed, but a good list needs to have a balance between my extreme and their extreme.

I used to think like you years ago. But i've seen around 400 films from that list by now and the only stinkers that i've encountered are In the Mood for Love and Crouching Tiger which isn't even the fault of the films but my personal dislike of Chinese cinema.

I think you would be surprised how many of the old and foreign movies are actualy pretty damn good.

The thing with such a list is that it's not a popularity contest for contemporary movies but an overview of the best movies of all time. New movies need some time to become classics before they can climb the list.

And honestly there arn't that many additional movies from the last 20 years that i would put on that list if i had a vote. Maybe The Lives of Others, Enter the Void and A Prophet.

I have that film sitting right next to me, so at this point it would be really really lazy of me not to participate and re-watch it. It's definitely one you will have to willfully suspend your disbelief to fully enjoy.

I'm not a big fan of Crouching Tiger either but what didn't you like about In the Mood for Love?

As for Touch of Evil, the thing I love the most about it is the music and moving through the streets at night from one location to the next. Just gives it such a great atmosphere and makes the town feel like an actual continuous whole entity.

I'm in, but I think you'll need a good mix of movies to keep everyone interested. Too much art house or old movies and you'll have a smallish group.

Good first choice, but perhaps a little difficult to get hold of?

sounds like a tight schedule to get a movie that is quite possibly very obscure and then watch it.
but sadly I have no better Idea.

If it were legal I'd just stream all of these movies on Justin.tv or something since I'll probably have most of them...But I don't think it would be.

It's a beautiful looking film but it just didn't resonate with me at all. I think it's purely a cultural thing for me. I have a hard time connecting to Chinese characters. The way the actors speak, their mimics and everything is so different. They often appear like masks to me. It's hard to find the right words for it. t don't have the same problem with Japanese or Korean movies.
The only Chinese or Hong Kong films that i can enjoy somewhat are comedies like Shaolin Soccer or maybe some Jackie Chan stuff but of course these don't have the artistical merrits to make it onto such a list.
