WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

No.. They've never put out a new iPhone with the same specs of the previous one.

Well, historically speaking, the 3G had the same CPU/GPU and RAM as the original iPhone, but it doesn't really matter.

This new iPhone will absolutely be spec bumped from the 4S.

16:9 sucks for photography and photo viewing :(

Yeah, I'm not so sure I like this 16:9 idea at all.

While I'm certainly concerned about the phone getting too big, I think they could bump the overall screen up around 4 inches and thing would still be OK. It doesn't even have to be 4 inches, 3.8 or 3.9 would be just fine for almost everyone.

I agree. I used to have a Droid 1. 16X9 is really terrible for web browsing. I upgraded to a 4.3" 8X5 phone later and its much better.

IPhone users wbill soon find out.

On the other hand, nearly every mobile website would be better with a 16:9 iPhone. Personally I don't browse desktop websites at all with my phone (why would you even want to?) so the increased vertical size is nothing but an advantage.

iPad is never going 16:9. It is meant to be held in portrait primarily, like a book. 16:9 tablets look absurd in portrait.

Ah yeah, forgot about that. But yeah, this will definitely be a bump from the 4S. As crazy as the processor is in the 4S, I expect something much better in the next one.

They're actually going with a longer screen? Jesus, what retarded move is that taking a dump all over the original apps?

Then again in a year or so everyone will be adjusting to that and we'll all see clear. TBH I'd like to see more widescreen games. It'd only be a matter of time before Android devices start doing the same

Wow, I hope this 16:9 rumor isn't true... I would live with it, but it would just be so dumb. The current aspect ratio is great, especially compared to 16:9.

Yeah, one side of me thinks the elongated/widescreen thing will actually happen, but another part of me thinks it'll never happen.. I hope it's the latter, but i'm not the only one who doesn't want that.

Well it will likely use the A5X chip the iPad 3 uses. Apple introduces a new chipset with the iPad and then pushes it down to the iPhone.

Pretty much confirmed really. iPod touch parts.

In line with today's claims of taller iPhone prototypes with 3.95-inch displays, one of our sources has provided us with images of what are claimed to be new next-generation iOS device parts being carried by a supplier. The most significant of these parts is a claimed front panel from the next-generation iPod touch, with the supplier claiming that the display would be taller than the current model and measure in at 4.1 inches diagonally.

But a GPU bump is overkill for that size screen and no CPU bump might be harsh for something that will go LTE with a small cell-phone sized battery.

I know I argued that it would use A5X earlier, but I'm beginning to think its not a good fit.

My guess is A5X is likely. And since that was designed when the iPad quadrupled it's resolution it should blaze on the next iPhone if it is only a 20% increase in pixel size :p

I'd guess 1.3cm or less. Less than 1/2" for you imperial users.

That's not a big deal. I'm liking what I'm seeing. The rumor that really worries me is the supposed micro-dock, I like being able to dock my iPhone/iPad on my alarm clock. Please don't change the dock Apple!

I'm 100% happy with a bigger screen. I wonder if they will keep the 4 design though, or go with a different design.

I think more or less the entire world will be disappointed if they don't change it. Keeping the same design and making the screen larger would seem really lazy. They need a new design built around the larger screen, not force it upon the current design.

Someone explain to me why 16:9 on portable devices is bad.

There's nothing wrong with 16:9, I used it on my Galaxy Nexus and it was fine. The size of that thing was a hinderance, not the aspect ratio. I'm happy that Apple won't be increasing the width of the phone, if they were to maintain the 16:10 ratio the width would have to grow in size too. A taller phone isn't a big deal, I wider one would make it more difficult to use one handed.

It's worse than 3:2 aspect when using the landscape mode. With full browser page in landscape, you actually see much less content with 16:9 aspect. Same when writing emails etc in landscape.

I also feel Apple is just dialing this in, and doing the easiest possible thing - can't believe they won't even make the screen bezel thinner. I just see nothing that this aspect ratio solves, and it just creates several problem that weren't there before, especially for people with smaller hands.

I don't think I can hold out for it to be released in October, might just dump ATT and get the 4S from Verizon

If you're jumping to Verizon now you might as well get a 4G unlimited data plan while they are still available and then switch to the next iPhone whenever it comes out.

That's a shame. Was really hoping for a serious innovation this go around.

I am not a fan of it yet, but what would one even consider "innovative" in terms of screen size?

They had three options, this option, increase size and pixel count with current ratio and PPI, or increase size with current pixel count / ratio and reduced PPI

That's the iPod, I imagine the iPhone is going to have a different design.

Well, for one, you're not going to get any better readability of articles out of a phone with the same width but extra height. The text will be the same size when it stretches to the edges of the screen. So one of the major advantages of a larger screen -- better legibility of text, larger rendering of web pages -- isn't going to be at an advantage over the same screen width but non-widescreen. Same issue for portrait with the keyboard up, unless they go for an extremely thin but wide keyboard, which would be a usability nightmare.

I can already see myself hating this thing to be honest.

Also the proportions of the phone will be horrible, but lots of people don't consider 'it's a beautiful object' to be a good reason to like something. But personally I think a good chunk of my love for the iPhone 4 is that it's probably the most attractive piece of consumer electronics on the market.
