DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

A car! I had a car! For 30 seconds, and then the server restarted..............................................................

Damn, berezino? There has to be issues with cars... The other night was a trip into madness and hilarity in that car. Seemed like the server was about to crash.

Yeah, vehicles probably shouldn't even be worried about until the servers become more stable. Of course, trying to fix up a vehicle does give a person a nice goal to work towards, so I guess that counts for something.

Love this game but I am going to take a break from it for a couple of weeks until a few more patches have been rolled out. I don't have a problem with any of them, just don't want to get tired of the game, plus I get to see a whole stack of new features rather than just a couple per week. =)

Just had a massive firefight at the NW airfield on a 25 players server. I was on my 4th day, having started from Chernogorsk, went to NW airfield, then to NE airfield and back.

I joined the server thinking small player numbers will provide a safe experience at the airfield, oh I was so wrong. I was looting the northern barracks and waiting for a friend to make his way from the coast when all of a sudden some guy starts shooting zombies near the barracks. I quickly get out and observe the entrance, he goes in and starts grabbing the leftover stuff.

I don't know why but all of a sudden I think of killing him. He has pretty decent gear, and my friend will be here any minute. He could use some head start. . I know I shouldn't do it, but my greedy side is putting a good fight. It's a great way to get quick stuff, but I'll waste the hours he put in that character and I know it's a pretty bad feeling when you lose your stuff.

My friend encourages me, he's been a killer ever since he got murdered in his first DayZ hour. He says I don't have to be the good guy this time, this is not a game of good and bad.

Though, I've been a pretty helpful character ever since I began. I've grouped with complete strangers, shared ammo and weapons. Alerted people of the locations of good weapons that I didn't need. I've been good enough I think.

I decide to do it.

Now, I'm used to killing tens of people in games like BF, but this is different. My heart starts pumping, I get excited, do soldiers before their first kill also feel like this?. It was really weird. He's still going from room to room, and there is only one exit.

He exits and I empty an M4 magazine into his body. He drops, and leaves the server immediately. Ragequit. I turn into a bandit. I instantly regret the decision, I hate being unfair to people. He didn't even see me. I check his gear, he has average stuff but enough for my friend. I lay down in at the base of a tree, hiding and waiting for my friend to come.

After 5 minutes, I see something white moving on my right. A bandit crawling! He's been crawling to get to the barracks, much smarter decision than shooting your way in. He heads for the guy that I just killed, without giving thought what might have killed him. My friend is almost here, I don't have any choice but kill him too. Another 30 rounds spent, and he's dead. He ragequit as well. Though, I feel better this time, thinking he was a bandit and he probably deserved it. I now deserve it too.

My friend arrives, we give each other transfusion as we're low on blood and then head to the prizes I claimed. I find a GPS and an entrenching tool that I didn't have. Not bad. We head inside the barracks for a last loot before we get away from the airfield. We find lots of STANAG for our weapons. I was in the last room of the barracks, sorting my gear when I heard the cracks of bullets whizzing by. It was a sniper and AK, they got my friend while he was leaving the building. A cold blooded planned murder just like mine. Though, by shooting they attract all the zombies and now they're busy fighting them. My friend urges me to quit and save my ass, but I want to stay. I know that these dudes are unaware of me, and there's probably two of them. With some luck, I can handle them.

I lay down in the corridor, waiting for them to come and claim their prey lying at the doorstep. One of them steps in and I immediately kill him. He was a bandit. The other one is clearly shocked, but he's outside and I'm inside so he has the positional advantage. To my surprise he leans from the entrance and takes pot shots at me, I put 3 rounds to his chest. He didn't die, but he fell on the floor, passing out. The zombies come charging in after our gunshots and start attacking the guy. His character screaming, he dies a painful death.

I somehow got out of this alive, but I now have a small problem with the 20 or so zombies eating the corpse right out of the door. Then I remember I had a M67 grenade, I carefully throw it(I killed myself so many times with it in vanilla ArmA). The grenade lands right in the middle of them and kill everyone instantly. It's a mess, though a satisfying one.

Someone asks about the fighting at the airfield in the chat, I tell him what happened and he says he's coming to whoop my bandit ass. This is where I fuck up, unwilling to give up four bodies full of gear (my friends is halfway again by this time, another joining game). I pick a spot near the barracks between two trees, it seems concealed enough.

After 20 minutes of alt-tabbing and waiting, I suddenly alt-tab back and barely see something resembling a survivor at the edge of the barracks, he's here! Though I'm still not sure if it's a zombie. I keep waiting for him to give in to temptation and start looting the bodies, nothing happens. Surely then it was a zombie? After five seconds, someone comes behind me and puts a full 6 rounds of revolver into my head. What an ending. He knew I would be around the barracks, so he took his sweet time finding me.

Lessons learned:

*Avoid small servers, as like minded people come to raid NW airfield.
*Don't get greedy and don't take everyone for stupid.
*AVOID being a bandit. After this I tried to spawn two times and was immediately shot at spawn. People really hate them, will I ever get rid of this skin?
*DayZ is the best thing happened to gaming in years.

You presumably won't need to worry about that soon, since they're getting rid of bandit skins (or at least allowing you to find more skins), so you can PK at will. Also even as it is now, there are some GAF people that have like -40000 humanity, so it's quite feasible to go on huge killing sprees if you're smart about it.

Err...
Edit:
Oh, it's a jet.

Finally picked up some good gear, and as I'm crawling to safety, I somehow managed to aggro a zombie. Ran into forest far from other zombies, turn around, and... my gun won't fire. Can't take out gun. Can't move. The solitary zombie puts me into coma in two hits despite having full blood and perfect vitals. Eventually I'm down to 400 blood, I leave coma, and am able to kill zombie. But instead of being able to bandage myself or apply blood pack, my character crawls in circles, ignoring all of my commands, and dies. Nice going, player character.

Yeah. I hate the "randomness" of zombie attacks. Get hit once, go comatose for 30 seconds.

In a game as unforgiving as DayZ, randomness needs to be removed.

These are the type of player-made experiences that I would love to try.

Don't bother with 6 updater right now, it sounds like you have an issue with the game itself, not the mod.

Screenshots of your errors would help or the actual messages.

Keep getting black screens when I screenshot, but that's probably my issue.

When I go to multiplayer there are only about 8 servers at the top that are either green or keyed (locked). Every other server is a red X and that include all the DayZ servers. When I click one just to see what I require to play, it says "requires 1.60" and that I have "1.60".

When I click the green US server for Combined Ops it says "requires 5.9" and that I have "1.59". Not sure if that means anything.

I followed these instructions to a "T" with the exception that I didn't do anything with the folders like he said, since I don't have the Steam version.

Seems the character servers are down? Can't seem to load up on any server.

For my second life I've been doing pretty good!

I found some people that were already dead with an ALICE pack and an M16! It was a tense time though, when glancing around I swear I saw someone go prone in the trees. I shot at them because I thought it was one of those typical bandit traps. (It was by some lumber camp or something) However I then attracted tons of zombie, after a tense chase through the woods and killing all the zombies I doubled my way back. I managed to get the ALICE pack and the m16 along with tons of food and ammo, and a couple smoke grenades. I booked it out of there soon as I had it all. (Too many gunshots going on around there to be comfortable.)

I still don't have a map, I have no idea where I'm at. I've tried to figure out where I was based on the map on the internet but I couldn't find something that matched the sign. I know I've moved further inland and followed some power lines. I had gone mostly west, been going a bit north as well.

I came upon a huge red warehouse that was missing pieces and had a ladder in the middle that was a big catwalk that had some stairs on the side of the building. That's about the most relevant landmark I've found.

Unfortunately even though i have enough canned food in my new ALICE pack to feed me for days I can't seem to find any matches and I seem to have developed a cold. My temperature is getting down to like 49 and it's difficult to shoot as my character keeps shaking.

The eternal search for matches will continue tomorrow, however my new M16, pack, and plethora of canned product won't keep me warm for long! Can you die to having a low temp?

ok, this is getting stupid! d/l'ed it from amazon and it would seem the file had an error. d/l'ed it again and had an error extracting file. going for try #3.

all this made worse from having shitty net in my podunk town.

think im gonna go lug my pc around and go begging for some (real)high speed internet...

I'm having trouble with graphics glitches (skybox turns grey/white, sometimes takes up my whole field of vision) and massive framerate drops compared to 1.57.

C92E15B8DD11EC382451B8F56E7307805FF7A0BB

The scariest moment of the nighttime run I just had.

Successful night though. Have an alice pack, 1911, winchester with a bunch of ammo, two compasses, hunting knife.

Between hacker bandits, rare eastern spawns, glitchy zombies, and our own "Itchy Fingers" Gibson, I am of the opinion that Chernarus never meant for me to visit the airfield.

Airfield isn't hard to get to if you know what your doing. Or have a decent guide. Jump on the mumble we are usually willing to help.

Edit: can someone who gets around 60 FPS post your config? I should be at least brute forcing this game to a solid 60 but I don't. GTX 680 and i7 920 @3.8 ghz with 6g of ram.

hahhaha

we just went to the island called something similar to oatmeal due north off the coast of elektro..

There were DOZENS of zombies there and not a single piece of loot. we held them off but were eventually overwhelmed (new chars wielding pistols)

this makes me wonder

is the zombie plague air borne? How did it reach the island? Did a zombie swim over there to eat a human? hmmm.

I'm concerned that removing bandit skins will now simply
make the game a glorified deathmatch. The griefing is
going to get downright ridiculous. Rocket better have a real
good pay off for those of us who value our humanity in-game.

yeah, this.

my guess - zombies will seek those with negative humanity. Even though it's sounds stupid... How else can you punish a player for that?

Man, I miss playing this mod but just can't handle sitting up long enough to play it with a kb+m along with the movement making me sick. Hopefully I get out of this phase and can get back to running for a long time just to die because that's what I strive for ingame.

I need to redo this whole room and set it up for comfy gaming. Does GameStop take trade-ins towards home improvement and furniture? I mean, they've branched out and do everything else now out of fear of the next consoles being anti-used games so maybe they should do that next.

I could always act like I'm playing this game right now by holding down the W key while staring at the screen for an hour as if I'm running to meet up with the group just to never find them. :P

man

why are docks such a bitch to traverse

lol this is how we met our demise this run...

we were running to elektro... little did we know we had some guests

Agree 100%. I thought the Bandit skin mechanic was among the best systems this game has to offer.

What's up with the server specific performance issues? One server I'll get 50+ FPS while I'll struggle to top 10 FPS on another

I don't know what this is but it's really stupid. Isn't even across different servers, necessarily: I was playing earlier this evening just fine, but when I died and respawned my FPS was down to 8.

Have you made a note of the amount of zombies on each server? Some of the servers have insane amounts at times that really hurt performance or they might just need reset. ArmA 2 is a very finicky game so it's hard to say for sure, but even the coop missions in normal ArmA 2 would have performance issues if there were too many enemies and civilians in a town.

And since some areas are more packed with zombies than others, you can have inconsistent performance since your PC might have to draw a lot more people onscreen than another spot on the server. That and the big cities and towns just suck altogether which is evident when you play the SP campaign in ArmA 2. Some missions will run fine until you approach a city so it's never really a stable game.

It's definitely related to the latest patch. See http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=5010

Oh damn. That's a pretty big screw-up. I guess ArmA 2 isn't to blame for the first time ever...lol

And to suggest the engine doesn't have its problems is quite the statement considering the performance has doubled now since the game's launch due to optimizations. Yes, it's an open world sim with A LOT of factors involved with advanced AI and civilians, etc. but that doesn't mean the engine is excusable. Otherwise, they've been talking about how great ArmA 3 looks and runs in comparison for no reason. Hell, there was a bug at launch that made people run the game at the same framerate no matter what settings and resolution the game was running at.

You have to remember that each server is very individual based on how many zombies, items, players, weather etc. the VR engine and the game's structure means your PC have to keep a track of a lot of things throughout the map despite them being an hour away from you, that can easily bring down performance. A large AI fight across the map can make your FPS drop bad if your CPU suck. Although, it could very well be a massive render / AI call that isn't necessary in the Day Z mod because the things I mentioned above don't usually have that much of an effect. The biggest factor in FPS drops is when an AI activates but it tends to go back up.

This has nothing to do with jank or engine problems as people keep suggesting, that's just a part of a large open world milsim engine. Can't do all that zoned crap, and cut-off sections as the game is built up around cross map actions like laser designation, distant audio recognition and tons of stuff part of a milsim that requires a constant presence for all players.

No.

It's a bug introduced in the latest hotfix, it's being attributed to the tweak in temperature monitoring. Rocket said a fix will be coming out later today.

lol yes, that is a factor in the game but just not the problem in this case then. It's an issue lot of people have had throughout the years and I just provided one explanation. So this time it was just a mod bug. People were just starting to blame the engine already.

My friend can't set up a tent. He tried everywhere - on the road, in the field with no grass, in the forest. It says that surface isn't flat enought.

wtf?

Ill must surely try this once it reaches release client status, it´s just too much of a hassle to play the alpha.

I wonder if they are planning a stand alone game. Would be an opportunity to ditch this piece of crap Arma engine.

Majority of things that make this mod so good are exclusive to the Arma engine. Unless you think one guy who already has a dayjob (@ Arma) is going to build his own.

You'll be waiting a long time on the first part and the second will never happen.

It´s just that the engine is so poorly optimized that Arma games always play (at release) like they were coded by a bunch of amateurs.

Don´t get me wrong, i´ve bought every game in the series since the original operation flashpoint and loved them, but they have always ran badly on even the best computer specs.

Plus... do they even have a Q&A department? Arma 2 launched with so many bugs that it´s almost libel for a lawsuit to release a game in that state.

You'll be waiting a long time on the first part and the second will never happen.

I hate getting excited about a game and then having to deal with constant bugs, playing alpha versions of mods just makes me feel like a human guinea pig :)

I would gladly donate for a kickstarter project for a stand alone version of DayZ, would love it.
