Men in Black III

Brought back memories. Wish they would have had some other Will Smith movie references in it. When he fell from the tower to travel in time then got back up I imagined him getting Fresh Prince of Bel-Air flash backs.

Also, think I saw Newt Gingrich at least twice on the monitors around the MIB headquarters.

Good flick, go see it.

I just watched There Will Be BLood finally.

Now that was a fucking weird movie. It was solidly acted, had a really unique soundtrack, some extreme tension and generally made me feel uneasy watching it. I can honestly say I enjoyed this bizarre film, but I don't think I'll revisit it anytime soon. The ending was pretty much out of nowhere although I kind of saw that coming. This sort of movie is solidly put together, but when it comes down to it, I don't really like HOW the put it together. It was very disjointed and confused, like it wasn't sure where to go. that was probably some kind of attempt to symbolically show the main characters descent into madness but it just didn't quite work for me.

I have the exact same emotions with it but am completely infatuated with that movie. DDL fucking delivers in that movie.

loved the original, really dug the remake.

one question though:
in the original, it's obvious jerry the vampire bangs amy and takes her virginity - is it implied that it happens the same way in the remake? i wasn't clear on it

I was a little disappointed. Not as good as I thought it would be mainly because the way it was filmed. All the effects annoyed me.

I WISH

YOU HAD

MORE TASTE

God Bless America which is On Demand right now was excellent.

Falling Down on Steroids. Basically a visual representation of watching Jersey Shore and what you would like to do to those people but society will not allow you. So much fun.

The Raid - Really great action movie. Enjoyed it all. Only one fight scene dragged on but the ending made it worth it.

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind - An odd movie but entertaining.

Old Boy - Started off really really well. The right amount of mystery and action. However, the ending sequence ruined it all. It was far too fucked up and ridiculous to be enjoyable. It's a shame.

Iron Sky - now I like ridiculous films quite a lot, but I was expecting a bit more spectacle than was delivered. The steampunk was quite minimal, and it focused too much on the annoying Nazi guy and crappy plot and not enough on the glorious flying machines.

Wasn't this film crowd-sourced on a pittance?

One of my favorite movies, although the effects could be annoying. I get the vibe that Rockstar took some of those effects and used them in Max Payne 3.

is that really want you want to do?

watched:

guy richie's sherlock holmes 1 & 2 * these are awful soulless things. also does anything ever happen? still might be better than anything else he's done.

Il giardino dei Finzi Contini **** white ribbon but with college-grads. beauitful film. there's something about large dogs in movies about facism that makes me want to start a tumblr. we should all talk about de sica more i think.

Les bonnes femmes *** not my favorite charbol, the characters seems some ill-defined, but the movie captures a great sense of energy and desire that is something wonderful.

show people ** it's kinda amazing that king vidor made a movie about movies that i didn't really care for - but it has no teeth.

Kurutta ippêji *** i'll say that i've never seen anything like this. i still don't believe it was made in 26.

Po zakon **** like a horror movie version of gold rush. this is a really amazing silent russian movie.

Gion no shimai *** - the opening tracking shot is kinda amazing - but it didn't grab me as much as mizoguchi later, more mature works.

men in black III **** really silly movie - though i don't think it fits with TLJ's backstory in the other ones. also how amazing is josh brolin?

and finally!!!!

out 1 (still can't rate) all 12 hours of this thing. it has some really transcendent moments and some really dumb ones over the 12 hours, but i need to sit with a nicer copy to really try and figure it out.

anyway i've finished TSPDT 1000, outside of art of vision, which i have also seen the shorter version, which isn't available to watching without traveling to moma.

all the other lists seem kinda lame now sadly. recommendations?

icheckmovies and AllMovie are my top movie sites.

AllMovie gives you awesome recommendations depending on what films you like. Highly recommend it.

You don't need an account to use it.

There are quite a few past Tony Scott films I really appreciate, but the effects and aesthetic style of Man on Fire really annoyed me, which pisses me off because the narrative, characters, and performances were really strong. Seeing a similar style repeated in Domino made me weary of Scott from then on, and I haven't seen any others from him. I ended up selling both, but I can't really call them bad films (MoF is the better film though). I may break the silence with Top Gun 2.

do they all have english versions? seems like going through this list will make me hate the way icm handles AKA titles.

A lot of them have English titles on IMDB but not ICM. Like Shen Nu is called the Goddess in English. The problem with that list is that some of the old Taiwanese films are really hard to find.

i'm dumb nevermind. anyway i'll take this trip with with you as far as i can go at least. i need to figure out what all i've seen first.

The Elephant Man

Strictly most beautiful movie I have seen in my life. I don't remember any movie which have touched me like this one.

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
Another western which stole my heart(They always does). Not as good as Clint Eastwood westerns or Leone westerns, still very good. A So Solid script, Witty lines and a funny ending (in a way). Must watch for western lovers.

Well it is number two on this list. I believe both list are official. I've only seen like 15 on both but I am not sure if that is right. Also, I never seen the sequels to A Better Tomorrow. Are they good?
The second one has an incredible final sequence (the standout action sequence of the series IMO), but the plot is far from the quality of the first, and the way they bring back Chow Yun-Fat is rather ridiculous. The third I cannot recommend, very forgettable.

What, not you too!

I have a BIG backlog of movies, but can't find the.. energy(?) to watch them, i don't even know.
FFS, i wanted to see Ballast since like 2008 and i have the bluray, but still have to watch it.
I just need to sit there and commit, which is absurd if you think about it, as it should be a pleasure.
I guess it's just some depression bullshit, but staring at the void or sleeping feels like a better idea, usually.

i think the second one is the only good one. it has some really proto-matrix bullet time stuff in it.

also

watched:

new police story. capt when i said light, i wasn't like asking for sad old jackie chan crying over dead cops :)

Caught Iron Sky last night. Yeah it was cheesy/over the top and intentional and all, but something still felt off about it. The editing felt kind of rough. Very ambitious though. Seemed kinda pricey for the type of movie but the CGI was decent, and the Moon sets looked great.

I forgot about that. I just really thinking about the ending chase. Jackie Chan crying always makes me sad. What did you think about it? Fun right? Also, Jackie Chan plays the best drunk.

it was okay. i don't think it compares to his classic work, and there was so much gun play and video games. it's kinda silly but is that intentional? jackie chan should remake lost weekend, cause yeh, he's the best drunk.

All the Police Story movies have really silly parts in them. Especially the second movie. It's borderline parody of the first Police Story. I agree about it not being up with his classic work but it was still think it was good.

Kill Bill 1 - Awesome action and an entertaining flick.

Kill Bill 2 - Not as good as the first in my opinion. Some boring sequences and not too much action. The action is definitely more hardcore than the first though.

Children of Men - A great tension filled movie. A bitter sweet ending but I liked it. The best of these 3 movies.

... mostly out of sheer curiosity than anything else.

It's pretty much what I expected going in... a manipulative, forced, heavy-handed "self-discovery" movie that used the backdrop of 9/11 for its purposes. The story premise was kinda ridiculous, and I've never wanted to drop kick a kid more then in this movie. Call it what you will... portrayal of ASD and precociousness but really what it was, was grating and irritating.

The thing is, I think there's elements in the story that haven't really been addressed in movies except off-handedly in Reign Over Me; that being the psychology and post-trauma of family members of 9/11, especially children. It's just that they way they did this was so completely wrong that I felt almost anger after finishing it.

So Snow White and the Huntsmen is actually good?

I thought it was just a grimdark Snow White adaptation that started as a medieval war movie with snow white stuff thrown in. Consider me pleasantly surprised.

Also, Kirsten Stewart over Charlize Theron (who's the fairest of them all?) in Maxim 100 must've been brilliant marketing for the movie. If not, funny coincidence.

Also, massive use of drugs and alcohol.

I've watched Kingdom of Heaven the other day.
It felt very solid and had an excellent sense of place, the battles were impessive and so was the scenary.
Orlando Bloom was not the good choice though, he couldn't support the role and it kinda ruined the film for me.

The Skin I Live In 4/5

Perhaps not such a unique concept, presented in a unique way. Compelling throughout, very nice to look at and well paced. Great score.

J Edgar 2/5

Well acted, although Leo didn't turn the character into anything that was different from his previous work. Let down by horrible pacing and a story that was not as interesting as it should be. Other than that, solid all round.

50/50 5/5

A realistically written and acted film, supported by art in the same vain. Funny also.

War Horse 3/5

Too whimsical for my tastes, maybe worth watching just for the production. Weak characters and story. Some of the sets seemed overproduced and thus unrealistic.

The Orlando Bland casting is even more bitter when you find out that Paul Bettany was originally rumored to be the lead in KoH.

The Raid: Redemption (Dir. by Gareth Evans): Christ, this is insanity. "Unrelenting" is the best word to describe The Raid. Ten minutes in and it hits 11 on the intensity switch and never dips below a 9 after that. The last fight scene in particular is an ironman match equal parts great choreography and reckless grappling. Shootouts, knife fights, hand to hand, environment usage, all top notch. The action is clear and well shot, the location is grimy, the violence is through the roof, and I loved it. Look elsewhere if you're looking for plot though because all it consists of is "Get in...oh snap, get out."

This Gareth Evans / Iko Uwais / Yayan Ruhian combo better stick together for a good long time because these guys are 2/2 so far. Merentau was a little heavy on the melodrama, but The Raid is pure action. The Protector 2 is going to have a tough time topping this one.

Planning to see 2 movies on Saturday, first time doing such a thing. The Raid, and Moonrise Kingdom. So excited!

Then Sunday, Prometheus IMAX. Been reading that it's not the best thing since sliced bread, so that sucks.

I saw Moonrise Kingdom on opening night and it was pretty much what I expected. I was pretty certain it would be my least favourite (of his live action films) considering the glowing reviews and how I disagree with the majority of the reviews of his previous films (Darjeeling Limited especially). The ending was nice though and it really is masterfully crafted. Ratings for what it's worth

Bottle Rocket > The Royal Tenenbaums = Rushmore > The Darjeeling Limited > Life Aquatic
Moonrise Kingdom > Fantastic Mr. Fox

Everything was on show in Moonrise Kingdom though, it was like Rushmore with the action filmed like Fantastic Mr. Fox with the set design mastery of The Royal Tenenbaums. It's probably the most Wes Anderson of all his films.

I also rewatched Strangers on a Train and Out of the Past recently. I think Out of the Past is my favourite noir, along with Detour. Definitely the one I've seen the most. Also, I can't shake the thought of Bill Murray playing Bruno in Strangers on a Train every time I watch it.

Anyone would've been better than Bloom, goddamnit i hated him in LotR and Pirates of the Caribbean, too.
That emotion-less delivery, that plastic face; the dude has like one expression, which is: squinting his eyes.
