Brian Banks (overturned rape conviction guy) getting his NFL shot

I feel bad for the guy because he has no chance.

You can't just come into the NFL from high school. You need to go to college and improve your skills and learn more about the game.

The guy might be a physical freak, but he's already 26 and will know nothing.

In case anyone was wondering about the accuser, Brian Banks is so coming up smelling like roses right now:

Brian Banks’ False Rape Accuser Wanetta Gibson Blew Her Entire $1.5 Million & is on Welfare

She's black? Huh. I thought she was white with his attorney staying "you're black nobody would believe you". You'd think any racism in the jury would cancel itself out with a black victim as well and he'd have a fair trial. Man his Attorney was really, really lazy.

How does one blow $1.5m in five years?

Seriously though. It's easy to blow through any amount of money if you are horrible with finances.

This is great news. While it doesn't make up for what he went through, hopefully it means that his chance to play professionally wasn't entirely denied to him.

Though I have to admit that the chances are slim. If he doesn't make it, I hope one of his other opportunities works out for him.

I don't think the victim being black would help him. The lawyer was probably just worried about the specific stereotype of all black men being thugs.

Seeing a black victim wouldn't make the jury forget that stereotype.

Sadly, he doesn't have a chance. He might have the body, but he won't have the reflexes, instinct, strategy etc gained from years of playing the sport. Brock Lesner couldn't make it on physique alone so this guy can't.

brock was a wrestler....this guy was a scouted football player, he's not a fish out of water ...just a fish that ..did 10 in the slammer because of a false witness.

Even if he doesn't make it on an NFL team, it sounds like he's got plenty of great opportunities ahead of him. Glad this is turning into a feel-good story.

It's awesome that he's getting his shot. Certainly deserves it. Even if he rides the bench for the rest of forever, he deserves the pay out.

Also, I'm surprised that Cincinnati wasn't the first one on the phone. I thought jail time was required to play there.

I doubt he wants to pull a Chris Weinke when he has the chance to land an NFL contract

And he got to spend 10 years in prison. What a deal.
Well he probably doesn't have a chance to land an NFL contract, but a free ride to college might be nice.

Brock played football in high school too you know. Obviously this guy was a far better prospect, but he's still a fish out of water. You cannot just go from high school football to the NFL.

And that's not even counting the fact he hasn't played in 10 years.

Brock played football in High school. If Brock couldn't go from high school football to wrestling(both amatur and pro) for 6 years and jump right into the NFL. This guy has little to no chance of going from 10 years in jail to the NFL.

It takes more then physique to play a sport. It's going to be very hard to make up the 10 years of training he didn't get.

Sucks for him, but he probably can't be an athlete any longer.

Actually at this point he'd be better off trying to get in the NFL first, then after he's done go back to school.

Going to college at this point would more than likely take him all the way past usability in the NFL. He'd be 30 when he finished going through a college program.
But he should have no injuries. He should be jus as usable

i didnt follow the origin thread too much. correct me here... so she sued the school for millions? what is coming of that? she doesnt have to pay any of it back?

As a Seattleite, and a Seahawks fan, I'd love to see this happen. It's really nice that Carroll is standing by his former recruit.

Seattle native here too. Would be an awesome story for the sport of football (after Bounty-gate). But most importantly his dream of having a professional career in football is alive and well. And a linebacker with that kind of size and speed is what Pete Carroll loves.

I would honestly love to see a court case thrown in her face but at this point she's on welfare. She won't ever pay back all the money she spent. She has two children, taking her away from them would be painful for the children. At this point I'd just differ to what Banks would what.

What? You're kidding right?

She committed an incredibly selfish, callous, despicable crime that stole 10 years of a man's life and has (to my knowledge) shown no remorse for anything she's done. Why should she be left alone?

I was being sarcastic.

You must not have read the original thread. Some in there acted like they were defending her honor.

Guys, the article here says he was in prison for 5 years. The earlier article said 6 years 2 months, if I recall. Regardless, he wasn't in prison for 10 years, and could have kept practicing his hand-egg skills since.

Oh good, I didn't think it would be possible for someone to seriously be defending her.

Although it sounds like reading the first thread would make me very depressed (I skimmed it when it was first posted but didn't see any defenders).

Back on topic: This is great news and I wish this guy all the best. He definitely deserves it.

Oh man, the story keeps getting better:

Wanetta Gibson’s Mom Wanda Rhodes Plotted Brian Banks’ False Rape Accusation for Money

“She was put up to this by her mother; (Wanetta) was only a teenager at the time,” said attorney Alissa Bjerkhoel of the California Innocence Project.

The neighbor said, “Wanetta wasn’t bright enough to think that up.”

Despite the settlement, the pair continued to live in a squalid apartment complex in a neighborhood where bars on the windows and metal security doors are commonplace. Weeds substitute for front lawns.

Today, after frittering away their money, the women move from one place to another, always a step ahead of debt collectors slapping them with liens, public records show. Rhodes has a lengthy rap sheet, including assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, drug offenses and stalking.

I would hope some team could at least sign and keep on the practice squad for a season.

At the very least, give him some kind of job to help him get financially situated.
