WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

Oh I thought it was still glass covered. It has that similar raised edge look the iPhone 4/4S has from those pics.

I believe the back glassed areas are only at the top and the bottom maybe only 20~25% of the back, the middle area people are complaining that they don't like the look of appears to be a metal.

Did they say it was unibody? It looks like the metal is all one piece.

Looks that way to me as well.

While anything will be better than the A4 in the iPhone 4, I'm really hoping there is still a noticeable performance increase in the new iPhone over the 4S. There are still little processing hiccups in iOS that a faster processor would help with.

And while I know it's all about the experience and not the hardware specs, when we still live in an age where the CPU is limiting the speed of the web browser, it becomes quite clear we have a way to go.

to my eyes, it looks like there’s no glass covered areas at all. It’s all metal and it’s just that the top and bottom parts are painted while the large, middle area isn't

I guess I'm looking at the lower right corner of the black one. It really looks similar to the corner here to me:

It looks to me very much like the antenna bands are much more integrated into the silhouette of the shape rather than sticking out like on the iPhone 4.

I feel like the back is flush with the sides, judging by the bands on the top and bottom of the side view, so I don't think it's glass. If the back is metal, the top and bottom are probably plastic.

They did a good job of fitting the pieces together, but to me they look like inserts that will keep the antennae from bridging and will allow for components (speaker/camera/mic/etc) to easily be fitted in while the metal frame holds the battery and logic board, and the screen and glass sits on top.

As rozay points out, the inserts could be plastic as well. Can't tell until someone gets their hands on it of course.

the black one obscures details. look at the chamfered edge on the white one. it runs all along the circumference of the phone

there’s no raised plastic lip around the edge. that lip is there for any glass surface. This shows up clearly on the 4 (on both sides) and on the front piece of this new phone (so we know they didn’t abandon that lip for all glass surfaces)

The thing about the glass back is that its super slippery and doesnt feel like you have a good grip on it. When I got my case (incipio ngp), it was like night and day

so...headphone jack on the bottom and the new dock connector is much smaller. sadly it's too late to cancel the evolution dock on kickstarter :(

glass makes it a wonder to look at, but as a device that is used and handled multiple times per day the construction is a PITA to manage without a case. i welcome a non-glass, metal-back redesign.

Yeah, discussed several pages back but it looks like it's almost completely flat on the back, seamless. However, on the front it still seems to have that 'step' from the edge, to the part that holds the screen.

Hopefully both sides are totally flat though, that would be pretty amazing in-hand.

You can see the top/bottom bezel slight reduction in the first photo.

See this jts? :p Chins look trimmed by only a few millimeters like I thought, definitely not a centimeter or anything too drastic.

It just looks so goddamned weird.
I guess nobody like my inductive charger speculation.

I like it, but I really don't think it works through metal. I'm not 100% certain if aluminium, being non-magnetic, would interfere with the electromagnetic field but I don't see any reason why it should be a metal back in order to have an inductive charger. If on the other hand the back is made of the any magnetic material, then the charging process would work more like an induction hob and heat the whole thing up.

Heh, the bottom chin looks like it's trimmed by something like 2mm above and 2mm below. If the top chin follows the trend it'll still sum up to 8mm total, almost a cm :P

If the antennae/frame is flush with the edge of the glass front panel it is possible that it too shrunk a mm all around, giving you a full cm.

In total. :lol Either way, I think the length looks a bit weird/jarring. We'll get used to it i'm sure, but man..

I do not mind the new iphone being a little bit longer, if you want a super small iphone just go with a 4 or 4S, anything which allows the new iphone to be powerful and have a bigger battery is worth the trade off on being a little longer.

wasnt there sources saying this was the last revision that Jobs personally had his hand into fully.

I find it hard to believe at this point.

The chins are definitely glass. Some photos show a clear reflection/glare like the current glass backs do. But who knows, maybe it is just shiny metal? Highly doubt it, though.

I don't mind the size, but that back design is unfortunate. Still looks better than the galaxy S3 at least.
That's the perfect word i've been looking for to describe this whole thing. Unfortunate.

The "Maps" app isn't made by Google. That's an Apple app with data sourced from Google.

Hopefully they remove the YouTube app while they're at it. It's crap.
This. If they would just make a YouTube app that was as good as their Apple Trailers app, i'd be ecstatic. It's long overdue, that thing is a real POS and is one of the reasons I use my MB for video.

Because what Steve Jobs would want is known by anyone. The guy didn't even know what he liked most of the time since he'd just change his mind on major decisions after sleeping on it.

I haven't seen this comparison, the usability on this looks as unideal as some of the larger android phones where you have to shift the phone in your hand to be able to reach the top of the screen. I'm going to take a seat on the side that thinks this 16:9 iPhone isn't the final design, and will have a hearty laugh if it turns out to be true.

So when do you guys plan on selling your 4S? Would now be a good time to start? I have a 64GB and I'm hoping to get $700 for it on Craigslist... Think that's wishful thinking? Also, how do I completely erase my phone to factory settings and not lose my Apps and Games?

I'm really digging what I'm hearing about the new iPhone. 4" screen and a faster processor? I'm in. :)

There's really no need to sell it this early, the next iPhone won't be released until September at the earliest. It's months away.

As for completely erasing your stuff, make sure to sync and back it up to iTunes first, then you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content/Settings.

I think I can get behind the charcoal look, really glad that the back plate isn't a the standard grey aluminum, but rather a darker shade, along with the entire rim. Looks good, even if the elongation is still a bit awkward.

Everything about that looks better than the 4/4S except for the 2 different colors of the back. I'm so excited for this phone to be released even though I won't be getting a new iPhone until at least the fall of 2013 since I'm not baller enough to buy off-contract iPhones.

this surprised me a lot. I bought my wife an iphone and she needed me to change a couple of settings for her. It was like grabbing a bar of soap, and I dropped it twice - luckily both times onto a soft surface indoors. Now I handle it with kid gloves.

If the front is flush with the frame like the back this thing could be pretty sleek. Like the matte finish so far. I am really starting to think the enclosure has gone aluminum and that the glass spots on the back and the seams are for the antenna. Would help lighten the whole device as well to counteract the weight from the bigger battery.

Overall this could be a big design improvement, even with the two tone and 16:9. Maybe I can finally go caseless! (who am I kidding :p)

its ridiculous that he got a hands on like this with the new case of the iphone 5. im sure thats the last thing apple wants to see. even though it seems impossible to stop leaks like that.

The two-tone thing really looks much better in that video than in the original picture.

I guess I'm in the minority because I still don't think it looks good. the combination of glossy and satin/brushed finishes on the back doesn't seem right.
