Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

Would have liked it more if they made a new controller BASED on the gamecube controller.
The Gamepad kinda reminds me of it with the new ergonomics and analog sticks.

Yeah, was probably a dumb question. :P

Also, I don't think the people worrying about button placement are putting much thought into it. The left stick is in the same position as the 360 controller's and that's where your thumb spends the most time. You'll be switching between the right stick and the face buttons every few seconds so does it really make any difference?

As for FPS where you use mainly the sticks and the triggers... if your thumb is comfortable staying on the top left of the controller, why wouldn't it'd be so on the other side?

Nintendo should have just released an improved Wiimote shell, that way they would automatically have pointing, tilt, rumble, and the speaker built-in. Given this will probably cost $50, a reduced price Wiimote+ and shell could come out to roughly same amount.

Though to be honest, they should have released one like that from the beginning. Just like they might as well have had click sticks from the beginning and we wouldn't have had to have 3 revisions of classic controllers at this point already. Also the Gamecube triggers were the best triggers, the 360-alike triggers on this thing are decidedly inferior.

This is hardly a sure thing. If the tablet control the TV through IR and having it's own processor we have yet to see if the controller has the same capability.

We were talking about the tablet, aka the GamePad.

I know this thread is about the Pro Controller, but it's kind of an "all random things Wii U" discussion in many ways right now.

And of course, if that GamePad turns on the TV.. it not being able to control the volume would be... some bizzare fuckup.

You are right in your implication that the Pro Controller probably won't be able to do anything like that. No screen, for one. And probably no IR.

Well one Wii U pad, two classic controllers, 4 wii-motes , wii-fit and you are set ;)

Most people will probably do fairly well with the base package, which will include a uPad and a Wii Remote + and Nunchuk. Buying Pro Controllers to round out your collection for local multi may save you money, but otherwise it's pointlessly differentiated from the uPad.

Nunchucks! Wii Zapper! That stupid steering wheel thingie! Also you probably can connect your 3DS somehow, too :)

Jesus Christ, you only need ONE, the Game Pad that comes with it. THAT'S IT. The Game Pad does everything the Pro Controller does and more.

Maybe throw a Wii Remote in there too, but only if you really want it.

Presumably this will have the gyros and accelerometers in? Just missing the IR.

I kind of expect third parties to mostly ignore the wiimote, except for games that are classic wii pointer/waggle games. The pro controller deliberately mirrors the main buttons of the pad controller without the screen so that's a relatively consistent control layout.

I oner if it encourages developers to ignore the tablet though? Nintendo points put the pro is useful for multi platform games, but is that tacitly accepting that multi platform games won't be expected to leverage the tablet screen at all?

And if the controls are identical, why would you buy this? If its a single player game you could just use the tablet and ignore the screen. Would this be significantly more comfortable that he tablet to hold for long periods?

I'll take it.... as long they make the underside of it as comfortable as a Wavebird.

Seriously, I was pleasantly surprised how well that controller feels in the hand.

THIS! I'm so incredibly bored with the 360 and PS3 controllers. You can still have a core, traditional controller while keeping it new and interesting. This one imitates one of the most mundane controllers we have in gaming. :/

The Wii U Gamepad has a microphone, and I think it also has speakers and headset socket.

I wonder whether these features will be present on the Wii U Pro Controller.

Also, it'll be interesting to see whether there is rumble in this controller. Nintendo have never really been big on rumble. They refer to this controller being light, which might allude to the Pro Controller having no rumble.

Will this be bundled in the box or not? If not then I can't imagine adoption will be very good just like pretty much every optional control system.

What's to adopt? It's the Wii U controller, without the screen.

Why are Nintendo determined to have the buttons under the sticks?

So awkward.

PlayStation has had them for 15 years. It's good to have the choice.

I see myself playing most games without a TV, just use the Wii U GamePad as screen, and Pro Controller. Just carry the console and power cable wherever, but mainly keepit in mybedroom.

How ever did you come to that impression?

Since Dual Shock 1 in 1997 (or 98?) you could click in the sticks as a button.

edit: oh shit... now I get it. He meant buttons to the south of the analog sticks... I thought he meant buttons literally beneath the sticks, that you click in. Gotcha.

...not sure if serious...

But yes, it has rumble.

Nintendo not big on rumble? Have you forgotten them bringing it to the home with the N64 pak before anyone else did? Obviously so.

Also, the Wii classic controller is the ONLY Nintendo controller since the N64 without built in rumble.

I'm not seeing a mic on the promo image but I assume it will have rumble, given that it's a stand alone controller this time. The Wii classic controller didn't because Nintendo was trying to keep costs down. Nintendo was selling it as a 20 USD add-on to the Wiimote rather than a 50 USD standalone device. I say rumble has a good chance.

The real question will be whether or not this controller will have all the motion sensors of the tablet pad or not. I can see that going either way.

Calling the Wii U tablet gimmicky is like calling the Dualshock 3 gimmicky because it has motion controls. It's a traditional controller with something extra.

That said, I'd prefer this controller when I'm playing a game that doesn't really take advantage of the screen for obvious reasons.

Who told you I don't think that the Sixaxis feature isn't gimmicky?

They're not just using HDMI-CEC? It'll only work with HDMI-CEC capable devices but it makes a lot more sense than Nintendo packaging universal remote software with their console.

They already said it was through IR.
It's just the touchscreen version of the remote you've been able to buy for $15 at Radio Shack for the past few decades.

What the?

So how much do people think this controller will cost?

The opening outlay on WiiU peripherals is beginning to look very pricey.

No more expensive than other consoles. Better having to buy this controller, than having to buy extra Wii U tablet controllers.
