Dallas drops down into the shaft, turns, and... SKREEEEEEE!

Like I said, I don't remember any jump scares in Alien. ;)

Which, I will say, is why I love Alien so much. So this isn't some kind of a negative thought on the film. Jump scares = manipulative bullshit.

facehugger intro the first time (keep in mind, I saw this before ALIENS came out so I had no idea about any of the Alien cycles) scared the ass off of me.

Man I hated that moment. "No...No...No...don't look in the egg... no...NAAAAAAAAAA" lol

It was the typical 'don't go off on your own' horror movie moment, but still worked brilliantly in ALIEN.

Sure. It's effective if handled right and I'm not saying they're not fun, but I prefer horror that is effective through suspense/tension than watching a scene that is deliberately setting up for a jump scare.

However, the promise of a jump scare is often used to simulate suspense because when you're in that "you know it's coming" moment, a few things happen. One, you know that you're about to be startled. Two, if you're watching it with people and you're the type of person that is embarrassed about being startled by a scene around other people, you're worried about that more than you're worried about the jump scare.

Even my favorite horror movie, Halloween, has a few jump scares. I forgive them though due to the craft and the overall atmosphere of the buildup to Michael Myers' attack on the neighborhood.

Agree.

I think one reason the Dallas one never operated as a jump scare for me was the way the music was clearly building toward a climax, and you can see the alien right behind him before Dallas turns around.

The only real ones are Jones in the locker, and the egg hatching.

The kind of jump scares where it's all quiet then we cut to a sudden movement and a stinger audio cue just piss me off.

There is so much influence on this forum or the whole fuckin Internet that those who haven't seen go in expecting to be disappointed, it's obvious, it's like everytime another guy sees the film, it's disappointing.
See the movie for yourself without any preconceived ideas.

The 3D in this movie is fantastic, done right, great depth, adds a lot to the experience, holograms look amazing too.

Seriously guys, check your eyes or something, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about if you think the 3D is barely there or not useful, it feels perfectly natural.

I didn't go in expecting to be disappointed. I was on Prometheus blackout from the day before any reviews hit. I was still disappointed. Yet I don't think it's a bad movie by any stretch of the word. It's just disappointing when you consider how great it could have been with better writers behind the film.

Seeing it again tonight.

=/

Well... it's the guy from Lost, right?

I mean... why would you do that? WHY, SCOTT?

And I guess you can't read. I was saying that I don't see the problem with going in with low expectations.

Disappointed and low expectations are two different things, guy. Maybe when you want to delineate, you should actually, you know...type it out?

Saw it again last night. It felt a little more coherent.. maybe I was filling in the gaps?

Still smh at the
end reveal or the beginning,
though. Sculli and I are definitely on the same page regarding that.
I know it isn't the case, but it almost feels as if they snuck that in or something. So cheap and nasty.

I'm finding I enjoy movies a lot more not reading threads, even after seeing it. No matter how entertaining or good you think a movie is, there are tons of people telling you how shitty it is.

Gaf movie threads, no one likes anything.

Um, you said low expectations.
Because that formulation works too as far as I'm concerned, but if that makes you feel better, I could just as well say "what's the problem with going in expecting to be disappointed?" Happy, now?
So? What's the problem with that?

And, incidentally, how did you get the idea that I "don't value forming one's own opinion without influence, negative or positive"? Do you think you could explain that one?

So you quote this.
"There is so much influence on this forum or the whole fuckin Internet that those who haven't seen go in expecting to be disappointed"

And say "And how is that a problem, exactly?". Are you that fucking dense, that you can't understand why someone would assume you mean every word you quoted as to what you're referring to? I really have to explain to you why it looks like you value soaking in any and all info on a thread that might influence your expectations for something? Learn to quote better, or learn to fucking bold the words your referring to.

And no, you don't get to skate by with saying basically, "what's the difference between the two?" One is you actively going in expecting the movie to fail for all intents and purposes. The other is going in with reservations for a myriad of reasons, but not outright judging the thing before you see it. Since you need every goddamned thing explained to you, apparently.

Booked for Friday's showing. I've wanted to let my emotions run high with this movie though I've kept my own hype down. However I think I'm more excited about the 3D of this movie since I've read a lot good things about it.

But I do.
Once again, the issue seems to be that you can't read, here.

"Going in expecting to be disappointed" (one could call that "low expectations", but I guess you'd disagree, possibly because you don't know what words mean) is not the same thing as "judging the movie before you see it".
And again: I don't see the problem with going in expecting to be disappointed (be it because of this forum, the internet at large, or whatever).

Will you guys fuck already.

Got damn there are some spoilerific TV spots. Just caught one watching comedy central. Ready for this movie to be inside of me so I can stop getting spoiled by TV and e3 press conferences.

Well, I thought it was kind of awesome. The ending is indeed a let down mostly due to the inherent structure of a prequel. But the ride is fun as hell. Every single shot is damn near gorgeous and loved how it evoked everything from 2001 to Solaris to, of course, Alien. The film actually feels like a mix of the latter and Aliens, with it's more popcorn approach. I also didn't mind the lack of development of supporting players, they're given just as much as they're due.

It does overextend itself to attempt land on a poignant place but
but the moment right after that (with the Alien reveal)
returns back to what I liked so much about the movie and the cheering from my theater only confirmed. It's just plain fun. Idris Elba rocks it as the captain, Michael Fassbender is great as expected. Even Noomi Rapace proves she has lead talent in Hollywood after the poor Sherlock Holmes sequel wasted her. My biggest problem is with her
final choice at the end. "Yeah, this went to complete shit. Now let's keep searching for answers!" Her operation scene though = my favorite part of the film. F*cking nuts.

Also, I haven't discussed this with anyone nor read spoilers here, but
the opening scene is the creation of mankind, right?

Anyways, I'd give this a solid B+. And the 3D was great.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Will be seeing it Friday.

Oh, Darren Aronofsky was sitting near me at my screening and he seemed to enjoy it. Huge smile on his face when he walked out. Armond White, on the other hand, bolted. Curious to read his review.

I can also safely say the trailers nearly ruin the film. They show almost every single scene, including the climax. Boo :( Still highly enjoyable though, since I was so caught up in the movie, mostly forgot.

Seeing it again 7 hours from now. But before that I have to go to a junket for Abe Lincoln Vampsy.

Edit: Yep. Trailers pretty much completely ruin the film. Which is why I get so stuck up about posting gifs etc and spoilers beyond the first trailers sometimes. It's the reason why I went on thread blackout for the first time a long time.

Yep, you were a smart man for this one Sculli. Normally, I don't care but it definitely hurt a bit here. Why in the hell even show that
alien ship take-off scene in the trailer?
