Final Fantasy real time tech demo - Luminous Studio [Up3: Survey/Screens/Video]

So they showed this to tease Sony and Microsoft to be the first to moneyhat on their first LUMINOUS ENGINE product.
They clearly cut off Nintendo by going "we expect this to work on next gen hardware" and then they don't share what kind of machine/super computer is running this.

So, Final Fantasy's complete absence from E3 makes me think they'll make a special 25th anniversary event, closer to December 18th (FF's original release).

Versus XIII... believe...

Yet, they prefer showing MORE stuff that will only be released in 5 years+!

Squarenix promising things then not living up to it, as thsince FFX. People will forget this demo just like they forgot the last one.

Enjoy the pretty video because you won't get that level of detail anytime soon.

Hair and cloth physics aside, that tech demo is quite shitty compared to stuff like The Last of Us or Assassin's Creed 3, or even GTA5.

I still think there are diminishing returns - at least in regards to cost. But I'm eating crow I think: damn this is pretty.

I don't mind 720p; the hair, the particles, the character models, the lighting. The entire package is yum.

The point of teams working on engines like this now is so cost is less of an issue than it needs to be. Studios were unprepared for the challenges this gen, IMO they are going to do what they could to avoid that next gen.

The problem with tech demos is they don't necessarily guarantee a game and or said demo being even close to the actual result of a finished game.

The demo looks absolutely stunning but it feels like a western developed game.
I wish it stays a tech demo.
However, if FFXV is developed with this engine, it should be great :D

The camera movement definitely does a lot for this demo. I'd like to see it with a fixed perspective like we'll get in most games.

Agni is an amazing character design.
Shame about the Arabs with AKs, but everything else looked great.

I think this would revitalize the Final Fantasy brand.

The credits list the concept design and some other bits from CD guys, so it is a combination of east and west developers

Fine by me

Yeah this is very true. There are major differences, and luxuries, when developing a tech demo versus a final playable product.

However imagining the possibilities is one of the fun aspects when discussing next gen. =p

Note: I'm not taking a dig at Uncharted, I just noticed those buildings in the background are PS1 grade and it really bugged me out.

Yes, this is what I absolutely don't want to see in FF ever. There are tons of ways to create fantasy worlds, let's not mix up real things with fantasy.

Very alluring demo. Love this stuff. But, yes, I hope they can follow through with full-scale next-gen productions. But it is nice to see a potential glimpse.

Lol what ? Last of US, AC3 and GTA5 doesn't hold a candle to this demo. It's next generation and looks like one. More it's looking better than FFX cutscenes and it's very close to FFXIII cutscenes.

edit: i thought you said it about new tech demo.

Has been confirmed to be in game yet?
Because this is a tech demo. A square enix tech demo at that. There is no reason whatsoever for us to believe any actual games they release will look this good.
And do we really want to be salivating over a tech demo of all things? They haven't even released or publicly showcased FFXIIIVersus yet, and it's been over 6 years now.
Let's keep it together here.

And for those who want to know what next-gen is going to be like. Go watch the video for watchdogs or starwars 1313. That is clearly next-gen. Current-gen for high end PC's. But there is absolutely no doubt that that is how the next-gen will look like.

This is far beyond the fidelity achievable in next-gen and is no way a realistic estimation.
Sorry to bring the party down. :(

Yes, i meant the ps3 tech demo.
Also looking at the FF8 ps2 tech demo, that also get shitted over by games like Silent Hill 3 or FFXII.
So maybe we will get these graphics after all (or something really close).

Well it's real time. The video at the beginning says so and there is a video of a Square guy presenting it at E3 stressing twice that it was real time. I don't know if you consider that "in-game". Do you consider MGS4 cutscenes in-game when they use higher res models in a controlled environment? It's possible I guess that it's real and they overestimated what consoles are going to be like.

It's not even funny what scenes like that do to my imagination. Being able to actually walk around in that entire environment would be my GOTF.

welp, so next gen will almost look like that.

tech demos/beta stuff always seems to look better in some ways than the final product.

If FFXV looked even close to THAT on the next gen consoles I would be so amazed :O

But thinking that we could get in only in 2015 / 2016 make me feel really sad :(

Oh well..

Well it's the shakiest, most incoherent camera work since the Bourne films and the Casino Royale car chases, so... Yeah. I guess it does a lot
to make you dizzy
The camera work was worse than those. I don't mind the shaky cam in the Bourne films, but I couldn't stand it in this. It's absolutely incoherent at times.

s this a middleware solution for licensing? Do you guys reckon we could see a resurgence of Japanese games if there is a competent Japanese made middleware next gen?

If this IS possible on next gen, I doubt an open world game would look as good as this. I'd love to be wrong though.

Some of you people have really low expectations for next gen. This is fully what I was always expecting next gen to look like. 2028? Geez the Wii has really scared some of you into thinking technology is going to slow like molasses while everyone quits working on hardware and works on motion control gimmicks.

If this is not next gen, and we only get minor improvements over current gen with some motion controls tacked on then good luck with that big three.

Really glad they have a survey for this. Doing it now. I'm REALLY interested in the world presented in this tech demo and Agni. She is quite stunning.

Be lucky you are just noticing things like this now, shit like this sticks out like a sore thumb to me =p

After the show floor closed for the day, Square Enix shared a three-minute trailer on its huge screen of Luminous Studio, its next generation engine for creating video games. Yoshihisa Hashimoto, chief technology officer for Square Enix, repeatedly assured that the trailer we were about to see was in real time, and not pre-rendered footage. He said it at least three times through the course of his short preamble, but once the trailer began it was obvious why he was so adamant about his real-time claims.

After the impressive trailer Hashimoto showed us another video to prove that that trailer we just saw was in fact real time. He showed scenes from the trailer being manipulated by changing the hair color of the priest, playing around with lighting effects, and showing off the engine’s real-time beard rendering by giving the homeless man from the beginning instant dreadlocks.
