Disclaimer: Sakaguchi is a hack and a bum. Somehow he got praised for the final fantasy franchise and once he left it all went downhill blah blah.

Lies. The real genius and incredible list of works this man rocked my childhood with is amazing. All the best FF games are his doing. Square wouldn't even matter if it wasn't for this dudes genius.

This is his appreciation thread / glazing / circle jerk.

What's your favorite work he's touched? Has he peaked?

I think for me it's Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy X.

Over the years I was kind of starting to think this way as well. Then I played Fantasian and I realized he really did add a lot.

What? Kitase hasn't been doing anything notable at Square Enix since, dare I say it, Final Fantasy X, other than being a regular spokeperson for the franchise.

He didn't prevent the making of Final Fantasy XIII to go into all the wrong directions, he didn't do enough to protect and see Versus XIII -- the single, most hyped piece of Final Fantasy media in all history -- through, and even allowed a mediocre partner such as CyberConnect2 to become attached to the initial development of Final Fantasy VII Remake, whose sequel was launched in a rushed, subpar technical condition -- failing to live up to the legacy of Final Fantasy games being technical showpieces for the latest hardware.

Yoshi-P and Tetsuya Nomura have done infinitely more for the series over the Square Enix era than him.

The guy who didn't show up until the 4th game is the grandfather of the series that started before he was even at the company....right.

I click on the thread and this guy's fucking mug immediately takes up most of my screen.

In all seriousness. This guy embodies what it truly means to shepherd Final Fantasy

Guy isn't too bad really, I say he has done more positive than negative given the shit show that is Square's management.

The combat systems in the 7 remake series has been damn good, so if that was helped in any shape or form due to the Guy's own history with that universe he gets a pat in the back.

He would have hired the guy is the combat director on Remake and Rebirth. He worked on the Monster Hunter games before he came to Square.

It's interesting that they hired another Capcom guy to be the combat director on FF16 too.

He's alright.

So is Sakaguchi after he left Square. I have enjoyed Mistwalker console games. The Last Story, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Fantasian have all been solid jrpgs.

Kitase sucks and is a big part of the downfall of Final Fantasy. Hiroyuki Ito was the real hero of FF games. It's a shame that SE (Kitase) locked him up in some deep basement, to work on shitty mobile games.

Kitase is the guy who forced Ito and Matsuno to have Vaan and Penelo in FFXII when they weren't supposed to be there. The main hero was supposed to be Balthier. Kitase insisted they needed young, anime-ish main characters for the game to sell well, so they just tacked on those two, who really serve no purpose in the story other than they just happen to be there, along for the ride.

Ito is a legend who directed 6, 9 and 12, the top tier FF games. He also designed the ATB system used in SNES FF games.

Some of these people in here saying "alright" as if he virtually hasn't been around just about as long as Sakaguchi and demonstrated competency. Few games had passed by before his on-boarding sure, but being modest about his talent is absurd.

His role is to get games out the door and manage resources as a Producer, an intermediary between marketing and development staff. Guys like him don't have all day to be letting staff bask in idealism. That's exactly the problem with guys like Nomura, and the reason why he got booted even. And you can still see him to this day desperately trying to shoehorn what was Versus XIII into KH4…

Kitase directed some of the best FF games, but has been gone downhill after X. Maybe he is worse as a producer or supervisor? Because he did push some shit later on.

Was he good as a game director under the wing of Sakaguchi's production? Absolutely yes.

But ever since he replaced Sakaguchi as the producer, it has been a complete unmitigated disaster. Guy wasn't made for the role and proven he can't deliver.

Vaan has a purpose, you should play the game again. Vaan and Ashe interact a lot.
Penelo is Vaans girlfriend so of course she comes along.

The dude can't even grow a manly mustache and you expect me to believe he fathered the FF series ?!

The goat will always be the sakmaster general

Imo the series took a turn for the worst after FFV.

I'd say FFIV ruined Final Fantasy for putting too much emphasis on characters and story.
Maybe... they kind of course corrected with V, but then doubled down on it on VI, which imo was way more over the place than IV's.

The man produced the entirety of the XIII trilogy, so accusations of fraud fraudery are proven in my mind.

Gonna have to side with Sakaguchi on this one. Legendary dev career with very rare missteps.

Isn't this sort of thing illegal? I mean, praising this dude and Tetsuya Nomura? If there aren't laws against it, there should be. I mean - FFX-2 and FFXIII. Hello?

Why is this idea even being entertained? Sakaguchi put out banger after banger after banger during his 10+ year tenure, and then as soon as he leaves the franchise nosedives in quality and hasn't recaptured the same quality in over 20 years.

Look I loved XIV, but not everyone plays MMOs and not everyone is willing to go through 200+ hours of slow world building and dialogue to get to the good stuff. Remake/Rebirth has been pretty damn good, but not without their serious flaws. Pretty much any original story beat in the Remake trilogy has been terrible so far. The fact is Square hasn't put out an absolute banger of a game that's united the fans since Sakaguchi left.

When you look at something like Clair Obscur, that was a game that had the same energy as a classic Final Fantasy game. A story and a cast of characters that stick with you, even long after you completed it. Huge critical acclaim and unanimous praise for gamers. Final Fantasy hasn't had that since the FFIV - FFX era.

I think Kitase is great and his games really shaped my love of JRPGs but you're right, Sakaguchi was still supervising most of these titles, writing their stories, assisting on project management.

Even something like Xenogears. Obviously this was a passion project for Tetsuya Takahashi and his wife but when you compare Xenogears to Xenosaga you can easily see that while Sakaguchi wasn't directing Xenogears, his supervisory role created some guard rails to give the title more of a classic Squaresoft/Final Fantasy feel. The structure of Xenosaga 1 and 2 feel very different in comparison. (Episode 3 returns to a Squaresoft-esque feel which is probably why its a fan favorite within the trilogy)
