Final Fantasy real time tech demo - Luminous Studio [Up3: Survey/Screens/Video]

I really hope that Square Enix, Epic Games, Naughty Dog, etc really push MS and Sony to make the hardware as powerful as possible.

I would gladly pay 500-600 dollars for a console that outputs these kind of graphics. Rather than pay 300-400 for a system that gets me graphics that look marginally bettter than what I have been playing for 8-9 years already.

These consoles will last us intil 2022-2024.

Think about that.

We need them to be as powerfull and feature rich as possible.

And extra $100 or so up front means you buy a couple less games or one less Limited Edition with a statue, and 100% of the thousands of dollars worth of games you buy for it over the next ten years or so will be improved by vast amount. Easy choice when you think it through.
This is the most depressing shit i've read all month.
If at next year's E3, these consoles will end up being underperforming, this line will give me fucking nightmares.
Jesus Christ you couldn't put it in a worse way.

Damn, what a realization..... In some aspects, yes. In some no. We're getting there, though.
That highlights the problem with everyone using Avatar though: in some ways we only just now reached Toy Story quality... and only partially, in many ways it's still clearly inferior. And it'll likely remain so simply because those are made with CGI workstations pouring over every second to get it right, a video game's real time and they'll never put that kind of investment into in-game cutscenes except maybe if that's all a game is (Heavy Rain), and even then likely not quite as obsessive.

While you can argue for whether we're seeing diminishing returns with console jumps, it's always been the case after a certain point of investing in tech. Look at video cards, going from a $100 to $200 gets you an insane amount, but the jump from $200 to $300 won't be as drastic, and $300 and above is throwing away money unless you're obscenely rich and just love being on the top with this. Even if you get a solid performance boast it'll likely be crushed in a few years by a $200 card anyway. Honestly, I kind of wonder if we'll have ENOUGH of a jump to get visuals close enough to this stuff with a $400 machine in late 2013 that doesn't have an expensive gimmick and aims for minimal losses. But then we don't even know what the Wii U may cost, we could've reached the point where anything that's a notable jump needs to be $500 or $600, and the PS3 showed even in better times that'll crash spectacularly.

I half expect the only thing worth really indulging in is Ram, at least usually that won't have a featureset that's obsolete even if the raw power is there, see how the Wii failed to get UE3 while smartphones did.

PC hardware can already do this. Just a $300-$400 range videocard, you don't even need a $500+ one.

Good thing that the entire nextgen systems will be around 500 then. You'll save on the MB, Case, CPU, RAM, Fans, HDD and drives. Which is, hmmm, quite a lot.

It's all in the post processing. The actual models aren't even that big a step up from what we've got at the moment

I'm sure you could run this demo smoothly on a fairly good PC right now.

If this is the next Final Fantasy, I am okay with it.
Graphically that's the most amazing real-time demo I've ever seen. Looks like next-gen is all about particle effects.

I didn't like the mooks with AKs, but I liked everything else.

Either case, the GTX 680 should be the target. This game would run at 720p 30fps on a console in 2015. If Sony were to release a "premium" system with an extra GPU in SLI - you could have 1080p.

And not-compressed-as-fuck normal maps, and better transparency effects, good motion blur, higher polycounts, higher precision lighting, etc

In the end i feel like SE saved this E3 lol. At least cause they remind us that next gen will be able to deliver, and not even with unrealistic specs. They also did what i thought Sony and Microsoft would do to counter Nintendo. Even if Nintendo, in the end, didn't show any "next gen" games graphic wise (but i'm sure we'll see some of them in the future, at least shader wise).

I was thinking they would show at least some impressive stuff, and Sony and Microsoft would just show off some demo to remind people next gen would be something else and kill any potential hype for the WiiU. In the end SE did it, but it wasn't even necessary...

Wow... This looked really great!

This was so much better than anything from FFXIII. Accomplished in mere minutes... haha.

But this can't be for this gen, can it? Looked way better than FF XIII IMO.

Liked the style, would've been nice if the actual characters where middle eastern/south asian as well to fit the setting more. That said is SE in any way capable of releasing decent plot to do the setting justice(I'm not demanding greatness here)?

I'll believe it.

WHEN I SEE IT RUNNING ON MY HOME CONSOLE

It might be real time but when SE are saying its too expensive to do towns for FFXIII, this level of visual competency isn't going to ever come to fruition. Where is versus again?!

Doubting we'll see stuff like that next gen, when you take into consideration AI, physics, etc. Maybe on PCs in a few years.

Wonder if the engine is flexible, though?

Maybe because I just watched this on iPhone but that is the most incredible thing I have ever seen if it was done realtime. It looked like the better CGI out there, if this, star wars and to a lesser extent Watch Dogs are what we can expect from ps4 and Xbox 720 next year then this will be one of the most significant jumps in power between a generation I have ever seen. Crazy stuff.

First time I saw it, I was blown away. Now, I see some flaws :(. Hate having an over analytical mind. It's just, Watch_Dogs truely blew me away, probably because that's this gen. This, it had nice character models, but the lighting doesn't look like something this gen couldn't do. Same goes for the animation and environment. This is all just me, but I just don't see anything that impressive.

This... is a satisfying step up above current gen graphics.

It also shows how close to the border of photorealism we are - I don't know how much further you could push graphics from here.

The physics, the lighting effects, the facial animations... it's all there. There's no want in the technology.

The tech demo looked amazing, the heroine was pretty interesting too. The initial slums and the machine guns and type of enemies made it feel a tad to Western for my tastes, but the world in general seems interesting when the camera zooms out in the end and you see the metropolis in the back.
Just a bit disappointed that the classic Final Fantasy seems to be gone and it's either all scifi nowadays or more "realism" as in the tech vid. At least FFXIV still has the world and setting I like. ^^

I feel the exact opposite. Amazing lighting, shits on Watch Dogs.

Square always delivers on the graphics front, they make some of the best visuals out there. But if this was really real time I wonder how many before generations it will take before we see something like this on consoles, it looks better than most CG from today.

I think the most important hint behind this tech demo is that, combined with Wada's words, next Final Fantasy will be build by Eidos and Tokyo.

Since the supposedly great playable FF-Type-0 has been declined a release in the west and Versus in development hell, the age of SE wowing me with non-playable graphics is long over. What a truly wasted generation this has been for them. An entire fucking generation of consoles, frittered. At least I guess they're getting ready for the next.

This is a very, very good move as it will bring out the best in talent over there with good management.

This demo was fantastic and it oozed that sense of mystery and awe again I use to have with older titles. It's also a plus to have a panzer dragoon vibe with the end scene. I hope this is the next main ff title.

I love how the range of comments here goes from "yeah ps3 could do it, not impressed" to "we'll need 20 years to see that, it's better than avatar"

Ha the miracle of good art direction and efficient effects :p

I didn't read the entire thread but am I the only one who is mightily impressed by this tech-demo but doesn't want to play any video game that looks like this? It's strange but the more realistic things get the less I seem to want to play them :/

It might just be the effect FF XIII left on me but I wish they would make a game like FF8 and FF9 again that actually feel like a fantasy world and not some pseudo realistic real-world spin-off which is what the tech demo made me feel. I am however glad if this engine really manages to cut the development time for Square.

If its targeted at DX11, probably next gen with the right team

Though for Nintendo consoles, maybe a few gens yeah

It's not even funny what scenes like that do to my imagination. Being able to actually walk around in that entire environment would be my GOTF.

Why did you have you say that!? I wasn't that impressed until I started thinking about what the game could possibly be like.

Don't let your imagination run away with itself, they'd never be able to build a world that expansive

I do wonder though, if Square Enix made this game and everything you see there was the world map but at 1:1 scale, would people be satisfied? It'd be more like an open world city than a world map really

Particles truly are the next-gens bloom.

Except I actually LIKE this. Bloom I just end up turning off if I can.

BTW this and Star Wars gives me hope. These two showings in particular look leaps and bounds better than anything I've seen current consoles do. If we get that next generation consider me impressed x 1000!

I'm surprised by this demo. Everything made sense. It didn't feel "Japanese trying to appeal to West market" at all

I must be missing something then, because the clearly indicated crazy guy gave something to the masked magician who became a cute female protagonist. I loved the first half, but after that it lost me.

Old guy with cool robe? Sure, I'd play him. Awesome dragon? Yes please. Androgynous feathered open-chest person? No thanks.

I'd want less texture and shadow flickering, for one :P. But that's just a matter of power.

Yeah, they actually managed to integrate FF staples like potions, summons and even crystals in a way that made sense and fit with the setting.

What? That's a very feminine looking girl. I know Square likes androgynous character designs but this one is not one of those, she's obviously female.
