In the trailer
You see it's a ship 'headed for earth', 'if we don't stop it, there won't be any home to go back to', the prometheus crashing into the alien ship, then the alien ship crashing to the ground while noomi and charlize run like mad.

They really just spoil the whole fucking movie in the trailers.

Last I heard, he wasn't interested in doing an extended cut on the bluray- though that might just be filtered neogaf interpretation of an interview answer... I'm not sure where I heard that.
 
Just saw it.

This is not a BAD movie, it's not even MEDIOCRE. In fact, there's some genuinely great filmmaking going on in the first couple acts in some scenes.

There's good mystery, like the kind in the original ALIEN. The kind that incites wonder and imagination. And then there's the kind of mystery where it seems like shit was thrown in there without an explanation just because they couldn't be arsed to give an explanation. And what was that, like five fucking different story arcs?

See the movie, guys. See it twice, even. There's nothin' like it.

But as of right now I don't personally even wanna consider this canon...and it's not even like Blade Runner or Kingdom of Heaven where aesthetic edits or more footage would "save" the movie so to speak. It's just a big jumble of shit like a katamari damacy. It's kinda funny actually.

"Going in expecting to be disappointed" (one could call that "low expectations", but I guess you'd disagree, possibly because you don't know what words mean) is not the same thing as "judging the movie before you see it".

It is the same thing duh, you're already forming an opinion based on everything you're reading about the movie, SO you're already judging it before seeing it.

But I rest my case, there are some pretty incredible opinions here. I mean, when you see people talking about Prometheus perhaps not being bad, it's some serious shit you got there.

GAF is mad.

It's kinda hard not to have any kind of expectations, or not to be influenced by anything at all before seeing a movie. But it's not the same thing as "judging it".

But even if that were the same thing (it's not), if you're seeing it anyway, what the fuck does it matter?

He makes a good point though because prior to the internet, people would see a trailer (maybe, depends on if they go to the theaters often) and then have a good amount of time in between before they see the film... now people go onto the internet, watch the trailers a few times, multiple ones, watch the RT ranking and read a few impressions, then go see the film.

I mean... Does that somehow prevent you from forming your own opinion upon watching the film? If so, I'm not sure the issue is with the internet, there...

And even if we were talking about people who decide against watching a movie because of what they've read/heard about it (THE-Pink-Dagger wasn't), well, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad move on their part either...

It's more about being aware of problems and then subconsciously looking for them where you otherwise wouldn't have.
 
I could see that, sure, but either I can't find any after all, and I doubt that would ruin my experience (maybe just the first time around, if I was reaaaally focused), or the problems are indeed there, and... well, I'd blame the movie, then.
 
Imagine you go to the theater and see a poster for Prometheus and think "oh shit new Ridley Scott Sci Fi" and you go and watch the film. I think you would generally have a better time then this whole marketing bombardment.
 
It's beautiful however you want to watch it. While I saw it in 2D out of preference there are parts of the movie that would have looked incredible in 3D. There is, however, a large chunk of the movie where 3D is superfluous.
 
Seeing it this evening at the IMAX - wooooooooooooooooooooo!

Cannot wait, although I am glad my expectations have been dropped by reviews, so at least I ought not to leave the cinema too disappointed. Mark Kermode liked it, which means I probably will too.

It's used tastefully but I don't think it added much to my experience. In fact I don't recall a single Avatar-like 3D moment. Although Prometheus 3D isn't distracting at all and even looks nice in some parts, if you're not a fan of 3D tax, then you might as well watch it in 2D.
 
It's the type of film where the 3D is good but it doesn't really matter; I hated Avatar but it looked fantastic and the 3D was great. Prometheus is the most unobtrusive ever. It doesn't really have great qualities of good 3D but doesn't have any of the bad sides.
 
Holy FUCK am I glad I had already seen this movie.

Got to the cinema (opening night here in Aus, first session) and everybody (about 400 people - packed Ridley screening) was lined up outside for some reason. Then the cinema announces the screening has been cancelled since the restaurant downstairs opened up again and smoke was coming through the cinema.

Goddammit. Was really looking forward to seeing it again. Will have to wait for the weekend.
 
Saw it last night. Ehh.... it wasn't bad, but there really just wasn't anything to it. It's like I watched 2 hours of middle with no meaningful beginning or end.
 
Surprised you want to see it again Sculli haha, shame about the screening though.

What kind of money do films make in Australia? Somewhat equivalent to UK takings?
 
Glad I avoided most of the trailers and stuff for this bar one or two, movie was fucking awesome. Loved it.
 
Regarding David's motivations:
I guess I never connected the dots on why David infected Charlie, and by effect Shaw. It's quite obvious that he was pushed by Weyland to find out as much as possible about the effects of the DNA stuff on humans. This, coupled with his own curiosity and weird robot mannerisms clears a few things up. That really bugged me after I saw it, but it makes sense now

Australia's only been settled by Europeans for just over 200 years. Somewhere like Canada, on the other hand, has had colonies for around 400. I think people in Australia and NZ tend to forget just how young we are compared to many other countries.

Yeah I do forget, I forgot the UK colonised it first. I suppose I just had the same thinking as America when the population growth was pretty massive, but I suppose its not as habitable.

Worst moment by far:

This pretty much sums up how I felt about it - a complete waste of money. Its only redeeming quality is some of the cinematography.

Good, i'm the only one who didn't like the movie.

It looks nice, the start envinronments appeal to me but that's all i liked in the movie. The rest is as you say.
 
I saw it last night. Thought it was good, but far from great.

Too many "movie" moments with characters not acting like real people, and a bit on the convoluted side. I really appreciated the "real world" tone of the original Alien, but that was absent here. Great visuals though, and Fassbender nailed his role perfectly.

For those who haven't seen the film, I'd set your expectations at "enjoyable blockbuster" not "masterpiece".
 
Seeing it in an hour. I've had low expectations ever since i found out about Lindelof's involvement, but i'm still holding out hope that i'll enjoy it.

Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the origin of human life and doesn't have the answers. It's in the classic tradition of golden age sci-fi, echoing Scott's "Alien" (1979), but creating a world of its own. I'm a pushover for material like this; it's a seamless blend of story, special effects and pitch-perfect casting, filmed in sane, effective 3-D that doesn't distract.
