[MS-Conf] The Halo 4 E3 Campaign Reveal

Biggest surprise of the show for me.

I expected something solid, but uninspired. Instead I see the best visuals on the system (without question), fantastic attention to detail and an obvious adoration for the franchise.

If 343 can do this on very old hardware, lord only knows what Halo 5 will look like.

Got to play this yesterday with some of the halogaf folks.

It looks flipping incredible, first of all. Easily a major step above reach. The fidelity of the characters, the weapons, the backdrops had me almost standing still for a moment just to take it in. At least, that'll be my excuse for losing the match. I love their new approach to the art style. Evolutionary beyond reach, and the lighting and shadow is spectacular.

But I have to say one thing that probably stood out even more was the fidelity of the sound--the gunshots, the explostions, the slugs hitting you when someone is laying into you with the BR, down to the sound of your armor flexing when you break into a run--was incredible! The foley is easily the best of the series.

Good good tell us more!

So I'm guessing the guns sound better in person than they do in videos? I see a lot of conflicting opinions on this.

HaloGAF said the same!

I know right, and no doubt they'll already be working on Halo 5.

Halo 3's reveal trailer was rendered in a higher resolution and downsampled removing all jaggies.

A real time version existed, but was noticeably jaggy: Presumably rendering in Halo 3's native resolution. Other than that everything was identical between the trailer and it's real time counterpart.

Halo4 seems to be totally ingame.

Now that you mention i recall the trailer they released on xbox live having extremelly long black bars...

I'm really impressed with what the studio is managing to squeeze from such old hardware.
Although it looks like they've greatly decreased the amount of "bouncing" particles from Halo Reach.

Just a heads up, Frankie confirmed MONTHS of Spartan Ops missions with each episode having a 7 minute CG cutscene and being around 15 minutes in length for each mission.

I posted this in the community thread, but what's the consensus on the new enemies in the trailer? The dog-like thing is native to the planet apparently, but the other two appear to be Forerunner in origin but "different from the Forerunners of legend". So do we think they are just part of the larger Forerunner force, or what do we think's going on? And is that
The Didact
speaking at the end of the trailer? Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Still missing Marty's magic touch. :(
Completely disagree.

Takes what he did best and magnifies it to a deeper, more emotional level. I love te change and welcome it.

Trailer looks fantastic. I'm hoping it's not another Halo 3 E3 reveal trailer blunder. I was disappointed back then, and I will be now as well.

Thank you Based343.

It's good to hear first hand experience. I always though gun sound in Halo games was weak. Glad they are improving that.

Curious why Frankie was so humble when Corinne Yu and others were saying best looking 360 game.

This is easily the best looking on the platform, bar none.

Because unlike many gamers, developers don't usually dismiss, ignore, or downplay the accomplishments of other studios.

People don't realize when they put a game on a pedestal (often unwarranted), in a way it's an insult to all the other studios who put as much work into their own projects.

This is why I can agree with someone saying Halo 4 is one of the best looking games on consoles, but would scoff if they said the best looking game. =p

Why does it have to be one way or the highway? They could easily phrase it more politely.

"We feel Halo 4 truly brings out the best that the 360 can offer and is visually the best looking on the platform."

Would that really be insulting?

After seeing the Final Fantasy demo, imagining a Halo game with that level of fidelity makes me get the shakes.

Holy Shit is 2014/15 going to be amazing for games.

You want other people saying that about your game, not yourself.

They are an unproven studio, so a whole lot of talk wouldn't do them good. They needed to show their work and let it speak for itself.

Damn you for quoting me before my edit =p

Maybe insulting is an extreme word, but it is ignorant. Every game has different demands and limitations based on how efficient the code is and how the game is designed.

IMO it's not fair to compare Halo 4 to BLOPs 2 for example since BLOPs 2 runs on a much more restrictive design (30fps vs 60fps).

For everything that Halo 4 does better than Game A, there are things that Game A may be doing better than Halo 4. Same goes for any other top tier game graphically on any system.

Ugh, the H4 pistol takes longer to kill? It better have more shots in a clip. In Reach, it really only needed 2 more shots in a clip, or one less shot to kill and it would have been great. Oh, and less bloom too, that was ridiculously too much in vanilla reach.

Honestly, if they just left it like it was in Reach it could be used as a really good backup weapon to finish off opponents.

My theory is that the Promeathean (s?) of this game has been collecting technology for 1000's and thousands of years. He scans the Infinity and sees it is chock a block with scientists and technology.

They guide the technology back home, where it is ASSIMILATED and used to further his own technology.

If he has been doing this for thousands of years that could explain the covenant scavengers, perhaps they were stranded on/near to the planet and they comb the wreckages and husks of the technologically stripped ships to grab the leftovers and over the long time they have been there, have actually created their own set of technology, hence the changes to armor.

If they have been there long enough, maybe the grunts have even evolved or been selectively bred, this could explain their change in physical appearance.

If this is the case, I predict we will get to see a ship graveyard, 1000's of spacecraft husks, stripped of any new technology. Maybe we will even see some lost UNSC ships from the Haloverse?

Perhaps even organic life is stripped and re purposed this would explain the skull behind the helmet and explain the mechanical appearance of the "native" life.

More terrifyingly it could also mean we could be facing Borg-ed Spartan's from the Infinity :S

Such advanced technology could provide a nice cure for Cortana's problem, or even cause a bigger problem if she somehow gained the power of the machines of requiem.

Wheatley Complex.

I'm sure there are loads of things that means some of this couldn't happen, but it's fun to speculated :D

What's a good fiction regimen to prep for this game? Just the Forerunner Trilogy? Go through Reach and Anniversary and read through all the datapads or whatever?

is there any official info about the infinity trailer that played before the halo demo (the one with real actors)? is that from the upcoming short film?

Seemed so, even though I don't think it's supposed to be short (the LE says something like 60 or 90 min).

the production value seemed really high. too high for a short trailer that leads into a demo.
if the film/episodes looks like that, i would be impressed.

Non-halo fans (niceley said) at work today asked me about Halo 4 and if buying a 360 now is a good idea, and what Halo games they should play. That means something.

I take it you have played the original trilogy in its entirety?

The things you list are a very good selection, but I also recommend reading Glasslands and the upcoming Thursday War book. And, well, reading Ghosts of Onyx even before that would certainly make it a bit easier for you to understand since Glasslands pretty much picks up right after that, in a way. Glasslands is also the first book to take place after the events of Halo 3.

Edit: Member, wooo!

That would be asking for too much but I'd love it to match the quality of that Deliver Hope trailer for Reach.

I'm not too sure this is related though:
The Special Edition of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, a 90-minute extended version of the live-action digital series which will take fans back to the terrifying beginning of the Human/Covenant war, when the Master Chief inspired a young cadet who would eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC's greatest vessel ever: the USNC Infinity.

I'm 99 % sure that was an excerpt from this exact digital series. They said numerous times that the production value for that thing was ridiculously high. Also, that it would introduce characters that appear ingame. Which would in this case be the captain.
