Just got back from seeing it. Lovely visuals and atmosphere, but I thought the script was stupid. I was hoping it could avoid the usual cliches. :\

Watching this movie in a few hours! I've been incredibly hyped for this movie at first, but tempered expectations due to the comments in this thread. That didn't stop me from watching Alien and Aliens about a dozen times this week, though.

One thing I'm 100% prepared for is the reveal that some random fucking person is a robot, though lol. I've only seen Alien, Aliens, and Alien: Resurrection, but that seems to be a common occurrence in this universe, so I'm assuming everyone is one until further notice

So whats the GAF consensus on 3D? Havent checked in this thread for a while due to fear of spoilers ..
After following this thread for awhile, it sounds like the movie was made with 3D in mind from the beginning, and is one of the better 3D movies. Still, it's 3D so it's up to how much you like dealing with glasses for two hours

As unnecessary as its ever been (the brighter, more spectacular quality of 2D should win every time, in my opinion). But not annoying here, and about as well done as it's ever been, save Avatar I guess.

Yet another Ridley Scott movie desperately in need of a director's cut to save it :/

For all the stuff he managed to really nail, the end product is pretty disappointing due to the screenplay not being up to snuff. Characterization was almost non-existant and even worse, character motivations were muddy at best. It feels like a good 40 minutes was slashed from the film, all of it intergral character development. The worst victim of this was David. I could not for the fucking life of me tell you what his motivations were in this movie. At one moment, he's
trying to sabotage everything and kill a character, the next moment he is helping that same character to escape
. Even worse? Said character doesn't react in any kind of normal human way. Just accepts his help without ever mentioning the
small elephant in the room of his part in her boyfriend's death and her almost-death
. Just brutal. Not to mention that a lot of the explanations of stuff and connections within the Alien universe came off mostly like a fan-fic. Ugh.

It's too bad that the movie was doomed from the very start with a script as shoddy as this, because its great in every single other facet. It's wonderfully acted, the visuals are mindblowing, the score is surprisingly great, it moves at a nice brisk pace, and has several incredibly cool sequences.

I'd love to believe that there is a great movie in there waiting to get out with a director's cut. Otherwise, prettiest disappointment in some time.

I feel like it's been a long time where a film had me leaving asking questions to many things, but in a good way. Coming up with our own hypothesis about how this happened and what's going to happen. Went on a total media blackout for this film a few months ago, and I'm really glad I did.

The 3d was also amazing in imax. Totally transported and terrifying. Really felt immersed in a sense of wonder the whole film. It's somewhat going against the modern traditional blockbuster filmmaking, where everything is explained like instructions by the end of the film. Prometheus leaves you wondering...and the first half of the film is nothing but build up for the insane final act.

However,
I felt the old man Weyland bit was rather useless, and did nothing with him trying to find the fountain of youth.
Granted, my favorite genre's of films are space thrillers...so I'm somewhat biased.

Came back from watching it just now, I loved it. I haven't see a sci-fi movie so intense, gripping and well put together in a long while. Cinema I saw it in was practically perfect too. Very bright projection which looked too bright without glasses, and perfect with them. Sound that literally made my pants shake when ship was taking off :) I really liked it far more than I thought I would given all the criticisms.

Just about the only thing I didn't like was the
running away from giant wheel / wheel falling on a side, only to miss the character
. Stuff like that belongs to more campy movies, and in fact practically identical scene was in Uncharted 3. What made them put something sort of comical like that in a movie like this was baffling to me.

I agree with everything this man has said.

You're looking at no one less than H. R. Giger. The guy has amazing designs and one of the most creepiest/disturbing too.

I don't think Giger designed the Prometheus, the space suits, the land rovers, etc... all of that stuff is what really blew my mind. Don't get me wrong I like Giger's work but I'm more talking about the look of the tech.

Oh yeah, Vickers' quarters looked incredible. That was the most high tech, badass chandelier I've ever seen.

Man, this movie's divisive. Half loves it, other half is disappointed or hated it. It went to see it for the second time today and I still love it. A director's cut would be very welcome though. Like others have said, sometimes it feels like integral scenes were cut from the movie.

My final verdict is that I liked it a lot but with reservations. It definitely entertained me, and that's why I love movies. Questionable writing and logic abound, I still liked the story and most of the characters, and I liked the horror elements.

About 10-15 more minutes of character interaction, dialogue, characters reacting to things in a more logical way, and things of that sort and I might have seen it as a rival to Alien and Aliens -- but at least its by far the third best movie in the series.

I think a director's cut with ironed out character intentions/reactions/dialogue could make me see it as being in the same ballpark as the first two. As it stands, it was a really entertaining sci-fi flick with impeccable visuals and cinematography.

I JUST DOUBLE-CHECKED. THAT WAS ALL.

You didn't get it :(

Oh yeah, I get that. I really loved the design of the tech too. Seriously loved the helmets of the space suits.

- First hour or so was great. Especially the stuff with
David alone on the ship. Investigating the planet was tense and interesting.
And holy shit at the scene with the
helmet cave in and the worm thing
. The effects and designs were perfect (except
the old age makeup).
Music was pretty solid too. Anything involving David was easily the most interesting parts of the film. Imax 3D was pretty good too.

- The film just starts to go down hill at
the point where she realizes she is pregnant.
It felt like there was footage left on the cutting room floor.

- 90% of the characters were unlikable. The main character essentially being a sort of creationist even up to the point of "because I chose to believe". It's hard to like people like that. And if this is on purpose as a way of creating some sort of cautionary tale like Icarus getting to close to the sun I don't think the film succeeds. I've never been a big fan of punishing human curiosity in stories[/URL]. That's probably why I liked Sunshine. It says fuck off to that idea. A more accurate interpretation might be to see it as an investigation of human need for exploration, and the drive to find the truth. Sadly every character keeps looking for "meaning" and never questions if that is even the right question to ask. Again though I don't think the movie does a good job framing these ideas. I had to sit here and try and come up with ways to defend the film and the characters when while I was watching it I was just annoyed. She also does do a stupid thing when she leaves the warning basically saying, "Hey don't come to this planet! Why? Because!" Would be nice to specify why if you don't want to create the exact same situation that caused you to come.
Maybe someone else can give a better explanation of the themes.

There is a scene in particular that counters the main characters journey that i'm glad is in there because it helps me personally relate some more, and I found it quite profound. However, the poor pacing and logic of that final half hour kind of ruins it.
The part where Waylon realizes his life search for some extra meaning was in vein and he says, "There is nothing" to which David replies, "I know." That was quite tragic and interesting, but it's really the only evolution we see in the movie. Though there is the stupid part of him being the villain looking for the fountain of youth, because he's an atheist.

- It created too many questions in my head about
trying to figure out the alien goo and how it worked on every creature and how it connected to the Alien films. All I really needed to know was that it was used as a weapon, but instead I had to sit there and figure out how it makes (living?) zombies, baby squids, and how that somehow creates something that looks like a Xenomorph all while the movie was flashing by. So did they think they could send this black goo to Earth to kill humans instantly like the Space Jockey at the Earth waterfall? Or do we turn into crazy super-human zombie guy and kill eachother? Does it depend on the dose? Were we going to ingest the small doses, and then impregnate our women? Then those squid babies would face hug onto a person and finally a Xenomorph would come out? Was the Xenomorph the real weapon and was this chain of events planned? Does a Xenomorph only come about through impregnation of a Space Jockey? When does the idea of an Alien Queen and eggs come into play... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! The questions I think the movie actually wants me to ask "Why did they want to wipe out humanity?" "Why did they create us?" "Does it matter why they wanted to wipe us out, and is it our need as human beings to find this out?" etc were lost among this. All questions should really come to me at the end, not while i'm trying to follow the plot and characters.
Again maybe someone else can explain it to me. I'll be reading through the thread to see what I missed.

Theron's
character is kind of wasted by the end. As are most of the characters... and that final action scene
with the ship falling to the planet
wasn't very interesting and features a dumb moment where characters cant seem to figure out how shapes work.

I suppose all my questions will be answered in Prometheus's. Where Elizabeth finds the Space Jockey home world and kills the shit out of them.

C+

EDIT: Ahhh I get the very opening scene now.

I must say though: I was completely wrong about Noomi Rapace. After seeing her in Sherlock Holmes, I thought she was going to be an absolutely dreadful english-speaking actor. But she was fantastic in this and really added some needed humanity to the movie.

I thought she started off shaky but grew into it as the film went on. She was great, yeah.

I thought overall the acting was fine even if the dialogue behind them wasn't. Apart from speaking in an American accent, Spall was fine. Fifield was okay, good actor (Sean Harris off the top of my head?) Marshall-Green was average, and the Scottish medic was shite.
Guy Pearce should have been played by Peter O'Toole

But Theron was good, Rapace was very good, Elba was great and Fassbender was brilliant.

I went to a 2:50 3D matinee and the house was packed. I was shocked. We went that early to avoid seat problems lol

Pretty surprised to hear it isn't the same elsewhere

Anyway, as a huge Alien fan I came away hugely impressed. I loved it, it was everything I wanted it to be, although I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the answers I was waiting for my whole life (who are the space jockeys, etc) led to more questions, but hey, that's the nature of the series, isn't it?

ITT: people going to one showing at one screen out of thousands upon thousands and declaring bomba.

In actuality, the latest numbers peg it over estimations at around $70m, even currently beating Madagascar 3. Bring on R-rated, big-budget sci-fi!

Yeah dumb. Avengers thread had some of that too. Despite not loving the movie I hope we see more like it.

I'mg going to see this early tomorrow. Do not know nor care to the alien/s fiction but I'd like this to be my starting ground.

How are the crowds at imax theaters? I'm wondering how early I should go for a 7pm showing at a digital imax in socal..30-40 minutes?

Thank you, but I'm trying to be as honest as possible without any sort of hyperbole. Hyperbole just isn't going to work for honest discussion. I also want to reasonably compare my experience of Prometheus with my first time watching Alien. It is not fair at all to compare this with all the times you've watched Alien and with all the acclaim it has built up over the years.

I've been thinking about Prometheus all day since the midnight showing and it's only grown with esteem. I just really liked so much about it. I just finished rewatching the first 35 minutes or so of Alien too. I still don't understand how fans of Alien don't at least like Prometheus. The only thing that makes sense to me is you didn't like the information presented in the film. Which there really is no arguing about. No story can appeal to everyone.
I'm the complete opposite. The more i think about it, the more it falls apart. Alien is a top 10 movie for me. It created tension through amazingly crafted build up and it had character interactions and reactions (this is the key for me) that were very believable. Prometheus, while undoubtedly beautiful, lacked any real resonance or sense of tension, because i couldn't, at the very least, empathize with many of the characters and their situation. Unlike Alien, i got enjoyment out of seeing most of them die. They were mostly B-level movie fodder on the level of Alien vs. Predator.

I found it so preposterous that this crew
had no idea what their expedition entailed beforehand (the script seemed to be designed this way in order to deliver some mightily awkward exposition) and their nonchalant reactions to the discovery of the pyramids and alien life grated on me.
There's so much stupidity and leaps in logic for supposedly intelligent people. The film just lacks cohesion on a basic structural level, because barely any time is devoted to character reactions of certain big events and nothing seems to happen organically because of this basic oversight. That Lindelof claims this film is hard sci-fi is quite laughable.

As i said earlier in the thread. I think the basic premise is fine. There's a great movie in here somewhere. I honestly have no issues with much of the ambiguity. It just isn't executed all that well... from the editing, to the dialogue, to the character behaviour, the creature effects and the music (i love the main theme, but other than that it was rather mediocre and obvious). Unfortunately, i don't think a director's cut can salvage those issues.

FWIW i wouldn't say this is a bad film, merely average, and i enjoyed many aspects of its production. It just could have been SO MUCH better and that makes me sad. I went in with low expectations and *still* came out massively disappointed. :/

David was such a waste of an android and it really jars with the opening, you would think that there is scope for some 'human' development but that's all thrown out of the airlock and follows plot convenience rather than establishing a connection. The ending could have resonated a lot more if they had done this properly. I thought the nods to fans to Alien weren't that great and 'prettiest disappointment in some time' is a very apt way to phrase it. It doesn't have to be like Alien either - there are moments when it gets it right but they are few and far between.
