The funniest scene in the movie is when
Charlize Theron is seen doing push ups in a close-up, in an intense manner and with perfected form, and then there's a cut to a more distant shot where she's only going down a few inches with these same push ups.

Looked so bad.

Saw the movie this morning. I liked it on because it works on a basic level but there are a lot of issues here and there in it. It'd be a much better movie if the writing was tightened up.

Holy shit, I'm so glad someone else noticed that! Hahahha

It wasn't that bad. The funniest scene in the movie is when
Idris Elba and his crew decide to sacrifice themselves for mankind. The scene had absolutely zero emotional weight and impact. It was such a throwaway scene.

Just got back from the movie. REALLY disliked it. First movie that has made me want to get up and walk out of it in years.

The last movie I walked out of was Batman & Robin in 98 after what I saw they did to Bane. As a huge Batman fan I swore I would never give WB another chance. It took word of mouth from people I trusted to go see Batman Begins, which was amazing.

Prometheus to me as a huge fan of the first 2 Alien films as bad as Batman & Robin was to the Batman films. Lets just hope that either they can get someone as talented as Christopher Nolan to do the next Alien flim or just let it die like they did with Batman for close to a decade.

Just got back from seeing it, loved it.
Am a HUGE fan of the Alien series (all but the AvP garbage).
Prometheus was exactly what I wanted it to be, its rare for a movie to do that, but this one did it for me.
The 3D was the best I have seen since Avatar...not a gimmick, but used to immerse further in the world being created.

The 3D really was fantastic, I will give the movie that. And there were some amazing shots in the movie, but where the movie falls apart is in the script and storytelling. There are also dramatic beats in this movie that are completely dead emotionally. At least two very big moments in this movie land with a friggin thud.

The ending got laughed at in my theater :(

Loyal to the bitter end. Woola is amazing. Deserves his own spinoff.

While I don't agree with most of what you preach. I ended up renting John Carter and thoroughly enjoyed it. More fun watching that then I did with Prometheus. Even with the cheesy as all hell action sequences and Kitsch's trying to be badass cowboy voice. I was loving it.

So yes, JC is the SciFi to beat this year.

:lol

You just brought up the next "WTF, nobody actually acts like this!" instance:

Weyland, presumed dead, shows up on the ship. Nobody bats an eye.

To be honest, the whole thing was telegraphed and obvious from miles away. Maybe the crew thought so too.

I wonder if people would have enjoyed this movie more if it were marketed as a 2-part movie or a trilogy that promised more answers in the future.

It had its flaws, but I still had a blast with the movie.. Its scope, implications, visuals, tone, and characters were fantastic. Its plot was simplistic enough with some flaws, but the bigger picture was filled with depth and grandeur. It needed more time to build up characters and tension, but I think it explained the bigger picture well enough while leaving it open with mystery. I think if it would have explained too much people would be just as upset.

'BOX OFFICE ON FIRE! ‘Prometheus’ Huge $22M-$26M Friday And $56M-$68M Weekend'

I suppose it is good for a sci-fi R rated movie?

John Carter is still the sci-fi movie to beat this year. :D

Hey, I actually liked John Carter, but Prometheus is a TON better IMO.

Hey, I actually liked John Carter, but Prometheus is a TON better IMO.

it is clearly the first part of a 2 part movie and does NOT stand on its own in terms of delivering a satisfying beginning, middle and end.

Dude people laugh at fucking everything in movies nowadays.

I despise going to the theater.

I saw it this morning and some 20 something girl was laughing hysterically at the most gruesome parts, especially the uh... most uncomfortable scene. Not a nervous laugh, but a "this is absurd" one. Wasn't a fan.

Saw it last night. I enjoyed this movie for the most part, but there was some stupid shit in regards to the writing. And I'm not talkin' horror genre trope stupid shit, but just genuinely stupid shit. A few examples I can think of.

- The two dudes who got freaked out at the first sight of the
decapitated Engineer
, practically clawing their way out of the place to get back to the ship. That was the kind of reaction a rational person would have, especially given the event that led up to it. Then these two knuckleheads are stuck back inside the
Engineer ship
and hear about a possible alien lifeform being picked up on scans, and understandably freak the fuck out and head the opposite direction. This all makes sense, until they go into the one room and
encounter an alien life form and TRY TO FUCKING KISS IT.
To my knowledge, between being freaked out and
being murdered by an Alien Worm
they didn't do any heavy dosage of psychotropic drugs, so their sudden growth of massive balls and subsequent actions made absolutely ZERO SENSE.

- When Shaw
cuts an alien squid out of her body
nobody on the entire ship seems to give a shit. This would be fine if it weren't for the fact that she
CUT OUT A FUCKING ALIEN, WHICH CAN NOW BE CRAWLING AROUND THE SHIP LOOKING FOR MOUTHS TO RAPE
. I know, I know,
Engineer in cryo-sleep = priority numero uno
, but the fact that nobody seemed to care about their ship (you know, the only way back home) being compromised bothers me greatly.

I liked the movie, I did. But as hard as I tried to love it, I just couldn't. At times it played out like bad fan fiction...

Just came back from it in IMAX 3D in NYC. I share the disappointment people have here, not hatred or "I want my money back!" kind of thing, but just like ...what. I just had a kind of =/ face by the end. There are questions I'm gonna ask in the spoiler thread to see if people more familiar with the mythology will be able to answer them but man I really wanted more. There seems to be so much here they could've expanded on, so many cool shots and new things. It felt too hollywood, David seemed to have more depth than any other character on the ship.

The characters were so bad I don't understand. Alien 1 it wasn't like the crew had huge depth or anything but they were really likeable and seemed to act much more like crew members. There was an absolute sense of comradare between them in Alien 1 even though most were strangers. There was no connection in this one at all except between the main girl and guy.

I shook my head so much when they kept going on about faith and 'yes I have no evidence but I believe it's fact anyway lolol' it fucking annoyed me so much, scientists wouldn't say stupid shit like that. I hate when movies have this underlining faith aspect that is so fucking cliche and not deep or philosophical at all. It just makes retards in the audience say 'hmm yup that's right! we all have to believe in something ya know!' it drives me mad. When is there going to be a sci fi movie that just completely shits on religion full stop without adding dumb faith strokes and 'they're just like me!' characters to appeal to believers.

I'm glad this was only really in the beginning and the rest didn't talk much about it, but the movie gave a nod to creationism and for that alone it pissed me off. I know it's fiction but every middle of the road person who saw it and doesn't know science is now going to look at Darwinism and evolution whenever they hear them as if they're controversial and unfounded. The movie gave creationism a voice as if it was a legit alternative theory.

It felt like there was none of the true suspense from Alien 1. I shouldn't have watched any of the trailers because all the cool shots were in it and I wasn't surprised by much. All of the suspense moments felt so cliche with the score going DUN at the exact predicable moment, I don't get it. Where is the atmosphere from the trailer? The one that was reminiscent of the first Alien trailer with the atmospheric screaming dun.....dun.......dun score in the background. There seemed to be none of that, that trailer had more atmosphere and haunting feeling than this movie. I really want to see a sequel if only to
see where the big humans are from
but I hope they put a lot more work into the script. (I loved Lost so I'm no Lindelof hater btw)

Also I'll add most people in my theater clapped at the end, which is contrary to some posts in here suggesting people seemed to feel jipped or annoyed by the ending. Most people seemed to have enjoyed it because it was something different, R rated, big budget and still entertaining etc., if only for that reason a lot of people will enjoy it. But I was expecting a sort of masterpiece and new sci fi mind blowing experience and it didn't get anywhere close to it.

Nope. Next thing we know the hate for Prometheus will be so strong that "Jar Jar is more likable than Idris Elba"

As I was walking out the person behind me was talking about "how lame the captain was".

I loved the movie but judging from what people were saying on the way out I was the only one :(

Holy shit, I'm so glad someone else noticed that! Hahahha

So, I just got back.

I liked it, a lot. But it's flawed, and every single flaw is because 1) the script needed another draft, and 2) the film needed 10-15 minutes more in the last half, as there are quire clearly gaps.

More later. But to this:

I think the one example above all others in this movie that illustrates how the characters are nothing more than plot-advancing robots devoid of any real human emotion or soul is when
Shaw gets impregnated with an alien baby, gives herself an abortion/cesarean, and nobody seems to notice or care
.

The fuck?!

Just that?

Half the crew just died to Mohawk Zombie. Gets killed, Never mentioned again. Nope, lets jump to Weyland wanting to go down. Not that someone just turned into a 28 days fucking zombie with body armour.
In Alien,
a creature breaks its way through Kane's chest during dinner.
Aside from the immediate shocked reaction shots, this is never discussed again. Nor is Brett's demise, beyond a brief conversation immediately following. Both constitute massive plot points where characters die. (The above is an Alien spoiler.)

That said, I still think the two scenes I quoted should have had follow up - because neither even result in a conversation. They just happen, and that's it. No reactions, no consequences, and both are huge fucking developments to the plot.

I don't know if this is a consequence of the script or the editing. Might be both.

Real spoiler. Just one, from the end.

Charlize's death was hilarious, and such a wasted opportunity. They both should have lived, and had to team up at the end against certain grouchy pilot. Having been antagonists through the film it would could have been interesting. Said grouchy pilot should have killed Charlize, and then squid thing "saves" Shaw at the last minute.

But no, we get an elaborate escape sequence and then *squish*. Stupid.

Again, real spoiler. Highlight only after watching. I'll do a longer spoiler-free set of thoughts later, and some spoiler ones in the spoiler thread.

I liked it a lot overall, but the script really needed another draft, and the editing hurt it badly.

Oh, one last thing. Prometheus makes the second film this year I've seen in theaters to have a prologue that actually hurts the film (the first being John Carter). The first scene should have been cut, and the film starting with the cave discovery.

The 3D was great. I think Scott is nearly on par with Cameron in his utilization of it.

Thinking about seeing it tomorrow, I actually haven't seen a 3D movie in theater before.

Should I go for $17.50 XD Real 3D, $11.25 Real 3D, or $7.25 2d ticket...(there's also theater with $8 Digital 3D ticket and one with $10 read 3D ticket, but both are further)?

This movie sets the record for number of TV ads that spoil major moments.

I mean, seriously, the latest one shows (I'm not even sure I should spoil this anymore)
going into surgery
. Fucking absurd. I'd rather have Disney's ineptitude than this nonsense.

17.50 wtf nothing but imax should cost that much :(

Yeah, I'm pissed about the trailers, the US one in particular.

Hell, the damn poster shows
the ship collision at the end
.

Fox totally fucked it up, ruined almost every interesting/surprising moment in the film.

Just went and saw it. My God, those characters were dumb. Movie looked absolutely beautiful but the the writers of this movie need to question their choice of profession.

Movie looked damn good though.

Man you know how people hate movies where the character doesn't do what seems like common sense? This movie took that to another fucking level. I mean
David basically tells this bitch he is the reason she has an alien in her, and why her boyfriend died.
and at no point does it ever hit her...like REALLY?!

The best part of this movie was
Idris gettin that Charlize pudding!...that we don't even get to see

Oiy. Oiy! Just got back. It was so so gooooood. Then those last moments where everything just turned wtf. Seriously. Wtf. So so disappointed.

Just got back from seeing it (like many else it seems).

I thought it was good overall but not amazing or mindblowing like I wanted it to be :(. That ultimately left me disappointed as I expected more from the film. I can't really put my finger on it, but it needed more tension/suspense or something. You didn't really connect with many of the characters either.
Shaw running around and doing all that just after the major surgery? They must have some pretty damn amazing pain killers in the future...

The 3D was well done. It wasn't distracting or bad in anyway and I would definitely recommend watching it in 3D.

Need to collect my thoughts on the film to really nail what I think.

Yeah, the fucking trailers and posters really took away any surprise from this movie, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it, especially the mythos it built up.

So, I just got back.

I agree with everything except that the prologue hurt the film, I thought it was a really cool sequence that was a blast to watch while opening the film in a unique way. Anyways, Im glad I am not the only would who enjoyed this movie, flawed as it is at points.
