I'm not sure if Fugazi as a whole is punk at all. They do so much especially towards the end that I just chalk them up to "hard rock." Goddamit, I need new Fugazi!

No Misfits? DRI?....which started as a punk band anyway. Circle Jerks had that one glorious album.

I found a used copy of Minor Threat's First Two 7"s on a 12" at my local record store over the weekend. I was pretty stoked about that.

As much as I like Converge, I'm not sure if they warrant being in the OP.

Where's all the Irish influenced punk rock like Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Flatfoot 56, and the older stuff that influenced those bands? I'm not into punk rock very much, more into hardcore, but the above is some good stuff. Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat.. All those bands are great.

Meh. If a band has elements of punk in their sound, they are fair game I think. General genre descriptions are useful but when people start arguing about which bands belong to which sub-genres, things tend to get annoying.

Metal fans in particular do this all the time and it drives me insane.

Fair enough, Converge probably shares a lot more in common with punk than what is called "metalcore" these days. Especially as far as attitude, Jake Bannon is a pissed off dude.

WELP. This is going to be interesting.

Pop-punk exists. The extent to which some of those bands can be labeled punk is debatable but I don't get all bent out of shape when people bring it up in the context of punk. It's just not something I choose to listen to personally, although I have a buddy who is SUPER into the genre. I've tried to get him to listen to other punk genre's but he has none of it. He mostly listens for the vocal melodies and lyrics.

Was an interview with Turbonegro and their new singer in one of the major newspapers here in Sweden today.
Didn't know that they were originally gonna call themselves Nazipenis, but realized that they wouldn't get any contracts then. Too bad, cause that would've been a hilarious name, haha.

apparently that's on wikipedia, and I guess common knowledge among the fans though :p

Hey, neither do I. Early Green Day is fucking good music. Other people however...less accepting.

On the topic of which, remember when Saves The Day were a pretty good Lifetime ripoff? What happened?

Oh sweet, can this be my new home for metalcore? I'd occasionally drop into the metal thread with it but there wasn't much discussion as it's a bit out of place there.

Also, thanks to the OP for categorizing this stuff and providing examples. I'm not very good with sub genres and the OP helps a lot.

Oh yeah- some how I'd only heard the soundtrack to their documentary... which, while kinda nice, didn't clue me into how awesome the rest of their stuff was.

Yea, I was a bit late to them as well, but they're one of my favorites. Argument is an amazing album.

I was remniscing back to the early aughts in the Syracuse metal/hardcore scene. This great band Bad Cops. Not sure if they're completely punk but they're definitely a blend.

Song starts at 0:36

This may not fit the category, but it would definitely sweet to get groups from local scenes. Bad Cops had a huge following, with two of the members being ex-Spark Lights the Friction. A huge group in the Syracuse scene, which in its early days were responsible for bands like Earth Crisis, and other straight-edge hardcore. If people dig that bad cops song I'll work on getting a few songs, my brother should have copies of the CDs as he was big in the scene playing in a few bands and knew the dudes. Now that I think about it they remind me of Fugazi a bit.

I think the punk influence in them is clear enough to warrant their inclusion. Early metalcore is at least as relevant to punk as post-hardcore is.

Fair enough.

OP, add H2O to the list if you can. I'm not sure where they'd fit, but they're in there with some 90's NYC hardcore/punk. 7 Seconds, Agnostic Front, and Sick of it All would be a good ones to add too.

If anybody wants any suggestions for modern hardcore bands, let me know.. Got tons of those.

I loved punk in late high school and early college. Especially, DC and NY hardcore, post-hardcore (bands on Revelation and Dischord), and I dabbled in ska-punk and pop punk. Really, got out of it as post hardcore died (which arguably isn't punk anyway), and moved pretty thoroughly into electronic which is where I've stayed ever since (but still explore loads of other genres).

Last spring I really got into early east coast hardcore again, and tried going through the discographies of the pioneers in the genre in a critical manner. Observations: Bad Brains and Minor Threat are the "alpha" and "omega" of hardcore - Bad Brains starts it and Minor Threat ends it. Black Flag is honestly mostly terrible. They're just noise and they can barely play their instruments. On the other hand, it's clear that the people in BB and MT can actually play music.

I've always been a major Fugazi fan, even if they aren't technically punk. Saw them twice back in the day. At one show, which was $7, there was no security whatsoever, so I got to literally stand about a foot from the band. All of their albums are golden (except maybe their last one), and I think MacKaye's chant vocals match perfectly with Piccioto's emo (in the original, good, sense of the genre - like Texas is the Reason or Shudder to Think) whine.

This blog (NSFW due to some art) is a great resource for bands that have provided their albums for download for free.. All kinds of stuff on there.. Hardcore, grindcore, punk, metal, etc.

This has reminded me of If You Make It, a really good site owned by Dave Garwacke of...many many bands. There are a fuckton of free albums up there, all completely legit. It's definitely skewed more towards the more pop and indie side of punk, but it's definitely worth checking out if you like that sort of stuff.

Huge thanks to the OP for convincing me to finally sit down and listen to Fugazi.

Absolutely brilliant music. Love their sort of experimental later period too. Experimental, but still very much Fugazi. Aged very gracefully.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about them getting together again?

The new Offspring is out there, if anyone cares - 'The Future is Now' & 'Secrets from the Underground' are surprisingly evocative of classic Offspring, but the vocals have an overproduced feel that I sense is going to be a recurring theme throughout. And here we go, 'Days Go By', a sacchrine sweet, clean cut slice of pop-rock that makes my stomach turn. 'Turning into You' is a great example of why I dislike the band's sound in recent years, this isn't The Offspring I know. 'Hurting as One' is an improvement and wouldn't sound too out of place on Americana, but then things get massively worse with 'Cruising California (Bumpin' in my Trunk)', a mess of awful pop-rap meets dude rock nonsense, followed by sappy ballad 'All I Have Left is You'. While 'OC Guns', a silly piece of Mexican sounding ska, is utterly forgettable, I wish I could forget the next track, a re-recording of Ignition classic 'Dirty Magic', overproduced and entirely unnecessary. 'I Wanna Secret Family (With You)' is the sort of pop-punk nonsense that's probably designed for a single, skip, but 'Dividing by Zero' is a marked improvement, showing the kind of pace and tone of Ixnay-era Offspring. Finally, 'Slim Pickens...' isn't entirely awful, just mostly awful, which bout sums up the whole album for me.

Thanks for the link. I've been getting the vast majority of the music I listen to lately this way. So many great new bands putting out free demos, albums and EPs.

You're welcome, hope you guys find some good stuff. Twitching Tongues is a really unique and interesting band out there right now. Either love it or hate it, I suppose.

I'm not into punk these days but I still love the spirit.

Bought this book when I was in Finland.

Ok, I rly enjoyed Last Lights. You linked to them twice instead of Beartrap though.

Cavalcades
FFO: Defeater, Touche Amore. That sort of hardcore.
I kind of know the guitarist from another forum, but only realised this after the first time I saw them. Which was funny.

Speaking of which, anyone have any suggestions for that kind of hardcore? Empty Days and Sleepless Nights is one of my favourite albums of last year, but I don't have that much other stuff that's similar :c

Modern Life is War if you haven't heard them yet. Comeback Kid is kind of in the same vein as Touche Amore. Touche Amore sometimes crosses a point where they sound a little emo to me, but they're pretty good.

I listened to Fucked Up for the first time recently. What a fucking band. I don't listen to too much punk these days. I prefer the attitude to the music. And the attitude is kind of lost when you try to repeat something from years back. Also, too many fucking Emo kids that think shit like Blink = Punk.

Anyway, best ones for punk attitude off the top of my head:

The Stooges
Sleater Kinney
Manic Street Preachers
Mclusky
Sonic Youth

What's wrong with emo?
I know what you meant, but JAWBREAKER!

Also on MLIW: I've listened to them on Youtube before and thought they were great, just never got around to actually getting any. And so I will now.

Honestly, I'm really amazed that immy's post didn't start a god damn fire in this thread.

90s punk was so good.

NOFX. Pennywise. The Offspring. Goldfinger. Green Day. A bunch of ska bands like Less Than Jake.

What would you guys classify Ted Leo as? Cause he is pretty amazing.

What are some hardcore bands that you liked? It's changed quite a bit, production values have improved a great deal.
That's good, because I find myself enjoying a lot of bands in spite of their production values.

Within hardcore, I'm a big fan of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Heart Attack, Agnostic Front and Bad Religion. There are others as well, but I'm mostly talking about early to mid eighties stuff; probably the most recent band that I've listened to and enjoyed that I'd classify as hardcore is Gorilla Biscuits.

When they are on, Dropkick Murphys are superb.

Have you heard H2O? They've been around quite a while, but they came out of that NYC scene and have kind of a blend of hardcore and punk. Wife and I are actually seeing them at This is Hardcore, one of the biggest fests in hardcore. Gorilla Biscuits is actually doing a reunion for it that day as well.

American Nightmare (later known as Give up the Ghost) is a good band for you to check out and was one of my favorites. Check out Suburban Scum, Cold World, Expire, Rotting Out, FocusedxMinds, and Backtrack. Let me know if you like any of those and I'll recommend some more.

I noticed that you didn't list any Swedish or Finnish hardcore. Try these bands if you haven't.

Shitlickers
Anti Cimex
Totalitär
Bombanfall
Crude SS
Mob 47
Rattus
Kaaos
Riisteyt

Honestly, I haven't been keeping up with hardcore much. Trying to stay relevant in jazz is a full-time occupation.

Jazz is really interesting and lot of talented people in that genre. I can imagine it takes a lot of works to keep your chops up.
