As much as I like Converge, I'm not sure if they warrant being in the OP.
Where's all the Irish influenced punk rock like Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Flatfoot 56, and the older stuff that influenced those bands? I'm not into punk rock very much, more into hardcore, but the above is some good stuff. Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat.. All those bands are great.
Meh. If a band has elements of punk in their sound, they are fair game I think. General genre descriptions are useful but when people start arguing about which bands belong to which sub-genres, things tend to get annoying.
Metal fans in particular do this all the time and it drives me insane.
No green day of blink.
LOL
WELP. This is going to be interesting.
Pop-punk exists. The extent to which some of those bands can be labeled punk is debatable but I don't get all bent out of shape when people bring it up in the context of punk. It's just not something I choose to listen to personally, although I have a buddy who is SUPER into the genre. I've tried to get him to listen to other punk genre's but he has none of it. He mostly listens for the vocal melodies and lyrics.
Huge thanks to the OP for convincing me to finally sit down and listen to Fugazi.
Good shit, no?
Oh yeah- some how I'd only heard the soundtrack to their documentary... which, while kinda nice, didn't clue me into how awesome the rest of their stuff was.
I think the punk influence in them is clear enough to warrant their inclusion. Early metalcore is at least as relevant to punk as post-hardcore is.As much as I like Converge, I'm not sure if they warrant being in the OP.

This blog (NSFW due to some art) is a great resource for bands that have provided their albums for download for free.. All kinds of stuff on there.. Hardcore, grindcore, punk, metal, etc.

This has reminded me of If You Make It, a really good site owned by Dave Garwacke of...many many bands. There are a fuckton of free albums up there, all completely legit. It's definitely skewed more towards the more pop and indie side of punk, but it's definitely worth checking out if you like that sort of stuff.
Thanks for the link. I've been getting the vast majority of the music I listen to lately this way. So many great new bands putting out free demos, albums and EPs.

This is my favorite punk album of the last 5 years. It's like Joy Division channeling Refused.
Ok, I rly enjoyed Last Lights. You linked to them twice instead of Beartrap though.
Cavalcades
FFO: Defeater, Touche Amore. That sort of hardcore.I kind of know the guitarist from another forum, but only realised this after the first time I saw them. Which was funny.
Speaking of which, anyone have any suggestions for that kind of hardcore? Empty Days and Sleepless Nights is one of my favourite albums of last year, but I don't have that much other stuff that's similar :c
Sign me up. I don't think I've listened to any hardcore from the past two decades that I've liked. If anybody wants any suggestions for modern hardcore bands, let me know.. Got tons of those.
I listened to Fucked Up for the first time recently. What a fucking band. I don't listen to too much punk these days. I prefer the attitude to the music. And the attitude is kind of lost when you try to repeat something from years back. Also, too many fucking Emo kids that think shit like Blink = Punk.
Anyway, best ones for punk attitude off the top of my head:
The Stooges
Sleater Kinney
Manic Street Preachers
Mclusky
Sonic Youth

That's good, because I find myself enjoying a lot of bands in spite of their production values. What are some hardcore bands that you liked? It's changed quite a bit, production values have improved a great deal.

Within hardcore, I'm a big fan of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Heart Attack, Agnostic Front and Bad Religion. There are others as well, but I'm mostly talking about early to mid eighties stuff; probably the most recent band that I've listened to and enjoyed that I'd classify as hardcore is Gorilla Biscuits.
I'll give this stuff a shot and let you know what sticks. I'm pretty picky, though.
Honestly, I haven't been keeping up with hardcore much. Trying to stay relevant in jazz is a full-time occupation.Word, if you don't like any of that, there's a lot more out there.
