Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

It having ARM instead of an Intel is what makes it tard. I can't just install steam on it and play through my entire collection, I will instead have do with tablet style games, and if I come across any interesting programs online I'll just have to hope they exist as ARM apps.

If they have the ability to put a proper Windows in a tablet format, then why not just do it for their entire range of tablets so that they can all benefit from having a proper desktop OS in a portable form factor?
Just adjust the hardware+extras for the different priced versions, e.g. budget could come with an i3 processor and no stylus, a mid-tier with i5 and no stylus, and a pro version with everything that has been shown.

Price. ARM is cheaper.

Windows RT doesn't support Active Directory, does it?

would it have to? He was talking about users in his school district.

RT machines can't join AD domains, but they can synchronised with corporate networks in other ways. In terms of app deployment, administrators can deploy apps to WOA users through the new control panel applet.

RT devices would work perfectly fine for a company wishing to use them merely as smart devices with access to their VPN, email and web apps -- especially for some companies who are testing out 'bring your own' IT policies.

The benefit of fully capable x86 devices would be automatic deployment, remote access and things like that. I don't really see Surface as ever invading the traditional office space, but it does seem like it could be used by casual and business users who are always on the move.

If the Pro is under a grand, I will buy one.

Damn this looks great. I want more specs though. Full Windows is what I've always wanted for a tablet. Even better that it has a kickstand and is essentially a laptop too. Can't wait to use this for light Steam use and Photoshop sketching....

I mean. Holy shit.
how far under a grand are we talking? lol. NINE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS

but yes, we need more info. Still, since it's not coming until 2013, none of this matters. The discussion probably should curve into a discussion about RT...but I don't think anyone here actually wants RT.

Really, does anyone here want to buy into Windows RT? When the "Pro" version is the real shit with the stylus, x86 Windows, and 1080p and blah blah? Just curious.

No buy if its over $800

I dunno. If its $899 with everything included and the other stats like battery power are good, I'll probably spring. If its $1000 or over, its really going to have to wow me with capabilities.

Still, may still do the RT, but would need to go hands on with it first.

Well, the biggest question when it comes to the hardware for a business is can it accept our security policies? If it'll take a companies' standard security requirements and needed applications, it could invade the traditional office. Not saying it will, because there isn't enough info on it, but there is a real possibility there that you don't have with the iPad.

ARM provides significantly longer battery life and much thinner devices - you know, stuff that sells the iPad.

Did you see the specs for the Intel-based surface? It's 50% thicker, 50% heavier, and not at all competitive with the iPad in terms of physical size. It probably won't be competitive on battery life either.

You are not most people. People are buying a tablet. They expect tablet-style games. Why are you going on and on about Steam when most people won't give a crap about that at all?

Just get the Pro tablet, be happy, and stop pretending like your preferences apply to the majority.

Can't wait to support these things and spend hours trying to remove viruses from them! Finally a tablet with all the extra Microsoft stuff that really makes Windows such a pleasant experience!

no reason to get RT version when you can get an Asus Transformer Pad Infinity with a 1080p screen. it's all about 8 Pro.

Well it's the first tablet that I've ever really had a strong desire to own. Hopefully the battery life is decent on the Pro version.

I have to agree with some people here saying that RT isn't competitive with the iPad. It's nice and all, but it has a worse screen, far less apps, and no compatibility with legacy windows software.

If it's priced lower (probably will to take a chunk of the market), it isn't all that bad. It'll even bring in possible gamers. I don't see them overtaking the majority of the market, but they will make a dent.

The Pro is the real announcement though, I don't give a fuck about tablets.

so RT has no stylus support? Are they going to put the presentation online?

Doesn't seem like it. Windows 8 supports it, but it's probably a cheaper screen if it doesn't have to support pen input. However, I really hope that by not including it in the specs, they mean it won't come with it, but you could still get it separately.

No the big decision if I should get the RT model day one, or if I should just wait 3 months to get the Pro version... Both look amazing though. Really glad that there's something which I really think can be labeled an iPad killer.

I think I am revising up the price points.

If they can do the 499/799 like I predicted, they would have announced the price now.

I am now predicting

499/599 for ARM version (it's Tegra3 btw)
899/999 for the intel version.

Yep. Can't imagine it being beyond that pricepoint and priced-to-move.
Me too, so I can wait. I want a windows tablet because I want my transition between my desktop and tablet to be flawless. No way I'm gonna get the gimped RT version.

I dunno. If its $899 with everything included and the other stats like battery power are good, I'll probably spring. If its $1000 or over, its really going to have to wow me with capabilities.

Yeah I really want one but not willing to pay, so I wait for price drop for the next year like other are suggesting....

Arm = longer battery life , thinner case (runs cooler).

LOL, very first comment:

I think the guy predicting that Apple will come after MS for the snap-on magnetic cover might have something.

He's got a point, I'm not sure I'm happy with vents and cooling fans in a tablet that you're supposed to hold in your hands. Is the Pro going to get as hot as my MBA considering they both house an Core i5 processor? That's not something that I want to see in a tablet.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. I honestly can't predict if it will or will not succeed, and what form of success it will have.

Bingo.

Don't worry, Surface brand protective gloves will be available.

I suspect there are somewhat restrained meltdowns occuring inside the heads of posters right here in this thread, for some reason. I really don't get it.

I don't either. I have Apple devices up the yang but I'm really fired up about the Pro version of the Surface. It really comes down to the digitizer.

It vents out of the edges.

Did you/do you currently spend hours trying to remove viruses from Windows machines?

This was appearing as $619 when I searched for it but when I click onto the product page it's not giving a price :S

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MR58MG/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Even still, at the RRP from Intel at $699 I'd expect to see the Pro for $749 with the case and stylus.
Wishful thinking indeed. I think a $749 price point is one that gets announced TODAY, as that price directly competes with the existing iPad, while offering more features.

Just doesn't seem realistic. But who knows...

That's how I see it. Why buy into the RT when you can get an Android/Apple tablet?

I guess I was looking for a sound argument that stands up to the massive amounts of software already available on Apple/Android devices and accessories.

Windows RT has all the capabilities of the iPad, plus more UI stuff like side-by-side apps, plus full-blown Office on it.
That is blatantly false. The iPad has hundreds of thousands of apps and a much better screen, not to mention better GPU performance.

how is it companies can patent the most retarded software patents, but a cool little idea like this can't be?

software patents need to be more like hardware patents.

This thread is so confusing. I want a high performing tablet that I can take notes on at work and also sketch some of my personal artwork/graphical work notes on. Do I want this?

There are reasons:

Not wanting to use Android
Wanting native MS Office support
Better UI

ASUS' spotty track record with their transformer tablet build quality...

... because Microsoft's track record with hardware build quality is so amazing!

also, what build quality track record? they had that one GPS issue due to a metal case and .... what else?

... better UI ... bahahahahhhhahaahahha

Nobody is melting down.

The Pro Surface is 30% heavier than the new iPad and much fatter, and the new iPad is already a bit to heavy for (comfortable) extended use. You will not want to one-hand the Pro Surface while reading a webpage or book. It will only be truly useful as a notebook replacement, in which case... why the fuck wouldn't you just buy an Ultrabook and be done with it?

The Pro Surface sounds cool in theory, but the engineering hasn't caught up with the idea.

Very. I could see Microsoft absorbing some of the cost ala the Xbox to get a foothold in the market.

I'd be very shocked if it went into 4 figures.

You might see it significantly on the RT model, but I doubt it'll be as significant for the Pro, because it more competes with ultrabooks than the iPad. I do agree with you to an extent though, and am estimating $799 - $899 with stylus and cover included. I would spring for either price.

The S3 skimps on a lot of stuff that the Surface Pro doesn't. 64GB SSD, 1080p, Office, Ivy Bridge…

Ivy Bridge won't increase the price of ultrabooks, 64GB of flash memory isn't all that much money at retail, Office being bundled I don't see adding to the price either, it'll just be a way to differentiate their tablet.

The main thing would be the 1080p screen as 10.6" is an odd size.

Wishful thinking indeed. I think a $749 price point is one that gets announced TODAY, as that price directly competes with the existing iPad, while offering more features.

Just doesn't seem realistic. But who knows...

Of course I could be wildly wrong in my guesstimates but who knows, all I would say is I just couldn't see them going into 4 figures with it.
