Don't give Apple ideas! That's not an IAP lol...otherwise your bank or brokerage would be paying apple money each time you did a transaction.

I'm not wearing any!
There, now you've all got that image in your head for calling me a hipster.
Retina always wins.No an Android tablet and soon a Windows tablet will be the best way to read comics. The best experience is not on an iPad.
I bought an Xbox 360 using NewEgg's app. I seriously doubt they handed Apple $60 for that. Game consoles have like zero margin on them......they probably would have lost $50 on the sale. Perhaps it's different for physical products as opposed to DLC.

supposedly the DPI on the x86/64 Surface is close to the iPad.Retina always wins.
Home button and sleep button at the same time. ??? Profit.I wish I could take an accurate photo of how comics look in landscape mode on the new iPad. It's beautiful and sharp, unlike my stupid Samsung Focus camera.
My iPhone 4 is retina but I still rather read comics on a tablet of a bigger size and proper aspect ratio than my iPhone.
Retina always wins.
Yeah but the battery life on that one is gonna be mad questionable is my guess. And the price. It's the one I'm interested in but I'm so weary.supposedly the DPI on the x86/64 Surface is close to the iPad.

I applaud that you acknowledged it, but I was making a serious point ... don't take it as a personal attack. Why, because I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong? I should get a fucking medal for that in this thread.
Please keep the brainwash/format wars shit out of it. It's tiresome and just obscures whatever point you're trying to make. Most of my posts in here are talking about how exciting the Surface is so obviously I'm a hipster who hates anything without an Apple logo on it.
Haha I think it's really just because I haven't looked at a physical comic in ages and I forgot that their ratio is longer and narrower than magazine pages.I applaud that you acknowledged it, but I was making a serious point ... don't take it as a personal attack.
It's not just that you assumed iPad must have made the correct choice for all given use-cases without having actually tested the other aspect ratio ... you were actually adamant in that defense. Saying it's 'terrible' is a pretty strong position to take.
I'm just saying you might want to think about that, especially given your involvement in a gadget podcast that many listen to. It's a hobby I'm heavily involved in, and I think it's good to keep an open mind about things. I've seen you reverse your feelings on things once it's been demonstrated - so I know you aren't a fanboy. Just pointing out that your initial impressions appear to be pretty colored at times.
I like the idea of bigger, but bigger usually means heavier. iPad is a great compromise in size/weight/readability.
Re that pic, do you have side borders on your iPad when you read comics?? I zoom in and just swipe the page up and down a bit. Makes the panels look way better.
Zooming in defeats the purpose and the experience for me of viewing a whole page of comic at a time. If I wanted to zoom in and pan around, I would have done so on my iPhone.
Home button and sleep button at the same time. ??? Profit.
Ahh you're right.I've got a couple of those but people will just say the screen is too small for it to be legible.
Here goes anyway

For the rare page that isn't split into panels, I can zoom out a bit, but I much prefer having a wide than a thin page.

I love the comic reading experience that I grew up with and that's simply turning page by page. Not turn, zoom, and pan.
Nobody knows the resolution on the surface Pro, but if it's assumed to be 1080P that's still a lot less than the iPad 3.
Someone claimed that 1080P over a 10" screen would be roughly 200 DPI....honestly I'm too lazy to do the math myself. Going by this comparison chart, it seems like Retina is still pretty far beyond 1080P, on a 10" device.

All star Superman!!!!
Even at 1080p, you're not gonna be running high end games at native res here. You'll be running then at a lower res for framerate reasons.Probably a stupid question but wouldn't going beyond 1080p be a bad trade-off for your 3D apps (yeah, I'm thinking about games) given the probable CPU/energy constraints? I seem to recall games that perform worse on the new iPad because of this?

I'll link the math tomorrow. Sleepy time nowDo you have a link to Apple's criteria? If true though, no reason why it should be higher. It probably won't even be noticeable.
Anyway, I'm not arguing that the Surface tablet isn't a nice piece of hardware, but Microsoft's previous tablet efforts were not appealing to 99.9% of the population.

since we're talking about comics:
is it feasible to comfortably read through an entire comic page in the latest iPad without the need to zoom in and screw around like that? (not counting that panel-to-panel smart view)
I guess just needing to scroll vertically is good enough
can you?

The resolution of the iPad 3 is just double that of the iPad/iPad 2 on both axes. What PPI is Retina, at a normal tablet viewing distance? If it is 1080P, then why did Apple go so much bigger for the iPad3?
