Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

I bought an Xbox 360 using NewEgg's app. I seriously doubt they handed Apple $60 for that. Game consoles have like zero margin on them......they probably would have lost $50 on the sale. Perhaps it's different for physical products as opposed to DLC.

Oh yes, it's limited to digital content of course :D

Retina always wins.

My iPhone 4 is retina but I still rather read comics on a tablet of a bigger size and proper aspect ratio than my iPhone.

Here's proof that the iPad is smaller and has borders.

That's not an IAP lol...otherwise your bank or brokerage would be paying apple money each time you did a transaction.

That was kinda the point of my original question -- does it count as an in-app purchase if you are using your own infrastructure to generate the transaction? If you are using your credit card processing and stuff like that, does Apple take a cut?

It's been cleared up -- anything digital Apple wants money, anything physical Apple gets zilch.

I like the idea of bigger, but bigger usually means heavier. iPad is a great compromise in size/weight/readability.

Re that pic, do you have side borders on your iPad when you read comics?? I zoom in and just swipe the page up and down a bit. Makes the panels look way better.

Funny enough, Gary has been praising pretty much every ultrabook he seen during octoberkast, CES, and a few weeks ago with that win 8 ultrabook.

The only kinda fanboyish bullshit he talked about recently (I recall) was how apparently apple's turn by turn thing will magically be better than every other gps companies' (that been doing that shit for years).

Anyhow, can't wait until I get my hands on one of these. Did they say this will only be sold through their stores?

How many MS stores are there anyways?

supposedly the DPI on the x86/64 Surface is close to the iPad.

Nobody knows the resolution on the surface Pro, but if it's assumed to be 1080P that's still a lot less than the iPad 3.

Someone claimed that 1080P over a 10" screen would be roughly 200 DPI....honestly I'm too lazy to do the math myself. Going by this comparison chart, it seems like Retina is still pretty far beyond 1080P, on a 10" device.

Why, because I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong? I should get a fucking medal for that in this thread.

Please keep the brainwash/format wars shit out of it. It's tiresome and just obscures whatever point you're trying to make. Most of my posts in here are talking about how exciting the Surface is so obviously I'm a hipster who hates anything without an Apple logo on it.
I applaud that you acknowledged it, but I was making a serious point ... don't take it as a personal attack.

It's not just that you assumed iPad must have made the correct choice for all given use-cases without having actually tested the other aspect ratio ... you were actually adamant in that defense. Saying it's 'terrible' is a pretty strong position to take.

I'm just saying you might want to think about that, especially given your involvement in a gadget podcast that many listen to. It's a hobby I'm heavily involved in, and I think it's good to keep an open mind about things. I've seen you reverse your feelings on things once it's been demonstrated - so I know you aren't a fanboy. Just pointing out that your initial impressions appear to be pretty colored at times. Something to think about in your position.

Haha I think it's really just because I haven't looked at a physical comic in ages and I forgot that their ratio is longer and narrower than magazine pages.

iPad isn't the lightest tablet either and still gives you smaller viewing space, and improper aspect ratio.

Zooming in defeats the purpose and the experience for me of viewing a whole page of comic at a time. If I wanted to zoom in and pan around, I would have done so on my iPhone.

My own BoM guesses based on iSuppli's breakdown of similar tablets. $499 for 32GB RT and $599 for 64GB RT?

Intel's initiative on lowering the BoM for Ultrabooks after Apple cut the Macbook Air price + price cuts from Intel on Ultrabook configurations, the 64GB Pro SKU might be $799-899.

For the rare page that isn't split into panels, I can zoom out a bit, but I much prefer having a wide than a thin page.

But it's not thin if you view it on something better than an iPad. Those pics clearly show that. I love the comic reading experience that I grew up with and that's simply turning page by page. Not turn, zoom, and pan. An iPad is good at reading comics; it's just not the best as there are better things out there.

I've got a couple of those but people will just say the screen is too small for it to be legible.

Here goes anyway

Damn that makes me want to upgrade from iPad 2 to 3!

I love the comic reading experience that I grew up with and that's simply turning page by page. Not turn, zoom, and pan.

You don't zoom every page, ComicZeal automatically zooms to the page edge, so it's turn, read, move thumb up a tiny bit as I get toward the bottom, turn, read, move thumb up a tiny bit as I get toward the bottom.

Can you take a side-by-side like the one above with the iPad zoomed into the edge for me?

Mt crappy 1600*900 max resolution LCD desktop monitor cries at the iPAD 3 retina display....

But the Microsoft Surface Tablet looks decent. Definitely liking the keyboard stand.

Surface Pro is 210ppi, iPad 3 is 260ppi. You'd hardly be able to tell the difference from the distance that you use a tablet.

Surface Pro is 1080p which is retina at its size. Based on Apple's own explanation, you shouldn't note a difference at the expected viewing distance

Steam, USB 360 Pad, Emulators, all my windows apps make the pro version so tempting for me.

DoTA2 & Starcraft 2 on this and I'm happy.

It might just be me, but ipad 3 didnt' completely 'blow my vision away'. Like I can still use my mom's ipad 2 without stabbing out my eyes, and it's not like my monitors are retina either.

I would stab my eyes out if I look at my old iphone 3g though ;P

I guess it really is all about view distance.

Probably a stupid question but wouldn't going beyond 1080p be a bad trade-off for your 3D apps (yeah, I'm thinking about games) given the probable CPU/energy constraints? I seem to recall games that perform worse on the new iPad because of this?

Even at 1080p, you're not gonna be running high end games at native res here. You'll be running then at a lower res for framerate reasons.

Do you have a link to Apple's criteria? If true though, no reason why it should be higher. It probably won't even be noticeable.

A tablet purchase never made sense to me until now. The surface (along with the dozens of other hybrids) is exactly what I was looking for. I need the entertainment AND production value.

Anyway, I'm not arguing that the Surface tablet isn't a nice piece of hardware, but Microsoft's previous tablet efforts were not appealing to 99.9% of the population.

I certainly give Apple credit for pushing the tablet market forward with the app store and touch UI, but give the early tablet PC's a break. Technology is exponential and the early tablet PC's had significant limitations... No capacitive screens, 180nm and bigger processors, huge parallel and serial ports, terrible batteries, etc. If anything, Apple had better timing by saving the tablet design when the technology caught up. MS was simply too early... Same can be said with the early windows phones.

What PPI is Retina, at a normal tablet viewing distance? If it is 1080P, then why did Apple go so much bigger for the iPad3?

since we're talking about comics:

is it feasible to comfortably read through an entire comic page in the latest iPad without the need to zoom in and screw around like that? (not counting that panel-to-panel smart view)

I guess just needing to scroll vertically is good enough

can you?

Yes. And it's awesome. Reading comixology on the new iPad is godly. I...I caught myself reaching for the corner to 'turn' the page the other day. :(

It's easier to scale bitmaps up if the resolution is an integral multiple. Just double all the pixels.

1024 * 2 = 2048
768 * 2 = 1536

Otherwise you have to do some sort of pixel filtering, and that makes things look blurry.

Surface Pro is 210ppi, iPad 3 is 260ppi. You'd hardly be able to tell the difference from the distance that you use a tablet.

That's nearly a 30% difference in PPI, though.

The new MacBook is supposedly 220 PPI, and if it counts as Retina then I suppose the Surface probably does (or almost does) at 210 PPI.

Mt crappy 1600*900 max resolution LCD desktop monitor cries at the iPAD 3 retina display....

That's the thing though - I have a 1920x1080 LCD monitor for my desktop PC, which is something like 22".

I read it on just fine - while I'm not saying the iPad3's resolution isn't better, isn't it pretty much overkill?

I mean, it's not like say, trying to read on a GBA or DS or even PSP where you can see the space in between the dots.
