Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

So if I'm getting a new laptop, nothing fancy probably just above netbook status, why SHOULDN'T I get this? Will it just be that expensive compared to laptops of the same price? This looks so good.

The only thing that concerns me, and its pretty much out of Microsoft's control, is the device's (tablet) software catalog. There's only so much Microsoft can do on that front, and unless the device catches on in a big way, that's always going to be an aspect that iOS and Android find themselves superior within.

Having owned a Zune HD, I was always jealous of the iPod touch in that regard, considering it's supported software was an absolute joke despite being an AMAZING dedicated MP3 player. I'm not sure how Windows 7 Phone is at the moment, but I'd imagine that its software support is pretty laughable in comparison to the competition.

I'm getting a Surface Pro when it is available. I far prefer the Windows ecosystem due to 3d modelling and game creation.

I have an iPad and iPhone, enjoy both of them, my phone FAR more, but the I don't fell comfortable having an iPad as my main computing solution as it is far too limiting a device. There are times when I really want to model or texture or dump Photos or something that the iPad just isn't suited for.

The three pillars of phone, tablet, pc need to be paired down to just two anyway and if all goes well here, it will have done its job.

Using my iPad and don't know how to link but in the article Sinofsky was asked if the battery life will meet the customers expectation.

One area Microsoft didn’t really talk about at all was battery life. The company isn’t talking specifics, but I did ask Sinofsky if he thinks Surface will deliver the type of battery life and performance that customers would expect.

“I definitely think so,” Sinofsky said.

Dear lord.

Depending on the price (Under 1000 for pro) and battery life (At least 8 hours for low CPU functions like web browsing). This is so bought as my next laptop and my next tablet. (My personal ipad 1 is getting a bit in age).

Never thought MS would literally give me everything I would want for a tablet.

1. Open system. So pretty much everything my pc can run like Steam and Emulators
2. USB support (Gamepads hell yeah).
3. SD support (Easy data transfer and cheap storage).
4. Keyboard and mouse support.
5. Stylus writing.
6. Office
7. TV out with standard cables

Apple would really have to blow me out with the ipad 4 to change my mind.

Microsoft jobs already count toward the US manufacturing number, at least this way they will actually be manufacturing something

with Chinese Workers :)

This is going to be a million miles away from what you may of experienced on Zune, and from the current WP7 market.

Right now, developers are looking at making a splash on Windows 8, because its the future of Windows... and any app developer doing that will be looking at whether their application suits the Metro environment. Anyone can see that touch devices are en vogue and on the rise. All but the most advanced software could migrate to Metro.

If they make something work for Metro in x86/64, its already running in the WinRT environment, and will function on the WOA devices like the Surface RT. They've got a good set of guides up for migrating Android / iPad apps, Silverlight applications, and even web apps made using HTML5 and Javascript...

There are going to be a lot of new apps for Windows 8, all integrating tightly into the new desktop UI - and all of those are going to work across these kinds of product. MS will be shipping hundreds of millions of these devices next year -- the software will be there to follow. There are a lot of creative app developers who target Apple devices who won't necessarily target these, but the same will be true vice versa eventually.

Windows on ARM will be one of the smartest things they've ever done.

This is one of my big question marks based on the spec sheet provided.

Tablet Class:
iPad 2 (1024x768): 25 Wh
Surface (ARM - 1280x720?): 32.5 Wh
iPad 3 (2048x1536): 42.5Wh

This is never going to be oranges-to-oranges, but the ARM model needs to scrounge for equivalent battery life to the iPad 2 with higher resolution and Tegra, while the Surface is basically just an ultrabook with a (somewhat) undersized battery and dedicated video (which neither Air model has). It's possible Nvidia has somehow beat out the SGX in terms of power draw...but I think it's more plausible that there is a penalty instead.

Ultrabook Class:
Macbook Air (11" - 1366x768): 35 Wh
Surface (x86 - 1920x1080): 42.5 Wh
Macbook Air (13" - 1400x900): 50 Wh

I think it's reasonable to expect maybe an hour deficit on the ARM model and 1-2 hour deficit on the x86 model, but it's just a guess. It's not impossible that they've solved a lot of power draw concerns.

I think the Samsung S7 Slate is 40 Wh, so it's gotta be near it's battery life. You will definitely need a battery extender with this thing for all day use away from wall socket.

It's like an iPad... except it's for adults.

Trollish comment but I think I get what you're saying.

The frustration that pushed me away from the iPad (twice) was the constant feeling of constraint for the sake of constraint. Having to jump through hoops to copy files over to the iPad since there's no real file system accessible to the user. No integrated USB port or SD card slot. Even with the camera kit connected I still couldn't directly plug in a memory card reader. Being stuck within the confines of the app store or having to deal with the cat and mouse hassle of jailbreaking. Constantly hitting up against artificial limitations made it more hassle than it was worth vs. the conventional option - a Macbook Air.

He's just such an unapologetic fanboy in general, his comments about why the Retina Macbook Pros being non-serviceable being a good thing and iFixIt is wrong to criticize it are obnoxious.

I'm not convinced the hundreds of millions is going to be a big driver for developers to PORT applications. Let's see I can keep writing to Win32 and have a billion people able to use my software, or I can spend an extreme amount of money to port it and lose over 3/4 of my audience and have to pay Microsoft a royalty.

The Pro is very interesting. Personally I could live with one of those, an iPad and an Ultrabook. Definitely see that the Pro could be used for all sorts of business applications.

Love the ui of this device, so smooth, elegant and fluid. Doesn't look like it's running 'OS for kids' like the competition.

This line never changes. Even 20, 25 years ago, it was the go-to line for Microsoft stalwarts talking about Apple products.

That said, I don't see this having any trouble gaining traction in "enterprise". The keys to the kingdom are held by the most prejudiced, techno-bigoted "IT professionals" after all. They just have to establish a corporate policy of "no Apple allowed", which they often gleefully do.

if it is indeed a tegra 3+ its a 28nm 4+1 big.little setup, so i can believe it

if its the normal tegra3 thats available now... its a piece of shit and its only redeeming factor should be that you can get it for under $200.

sounds about right. will tegra 3+ even make it out this year though?

Full Excel and Outlook > built for mobile OS.

That's why businesses will flock to this.

Well the main thing is that Windows 8 can be managed and intergrated into a IT ecosystem a lot easier, and of course cheaper prices on hardware across the board most likely.

supposed to be out in the fall. I thought this tablet is running it ?

full excel and outlook would be terrible to use with a touch device. I want to see how they do metro Office
Office 2013 has a touch mode where it spreads everything out for easier touch input. And of course, a lot of WIndows 8/Windows RT tablets will have detachable keyboards, trackpads etc..

yeah that pissed me off to no end. his tiny violin comment was fucking jawdroppingly douchey. I'm sure ifixit will find a way to survive, but I'll tell you this: everything I've ever bought from them has been for an MBP. apples new closed systems is a huge threat to them. Gruber sucks. He's occasionally insightful and a brings good points to the table but man that guy sucks. I would never want to hang out with him.

If this is out in the fall there's a good chance it has the tegra 3+.

If it doesn't? RIP microsoft

What did Gruber say about the surface RT/Pro? No interest in giving him page clicks anymore.

We all know a Google Tablet is coming, but whether or not it comes in at $200 or less and packs a quad-core processor has yet to be seen. That's the big "if" here.
what are the rumors around that event? I assume a updated OS will be unveiled and of course a tablet. I really know nothing more, haven't been keeping up with it.

lol here lies microsoft, if only he'd have went with tegra 3

if its only a tegra 3 and not a 3+ its going to be so woefully underpowered

7" tablet with tegra 3 running the new OS for $199 are the more concrete rumors. $149 i think are the insane rumors.
