Star Wars 1313: Are these kinds of graphics prowess what we can expect from Next-Gen?

There was 2 things that blew my mind completely at E3 this year: Star Wars 1313 and Watch_Dogs.

I just finished watching the GameTrailers E3 Best Graphics Award, which rewards it to Star Wars 1313. They mention "this is the graphics jump we've been waiting for" and "if this is what we can expect from the next generation consoles, take our money now". However, both Star Wars 1313 and Watch_Dogs we're demoed at E3 on high-end PC setups, which could go well over a 1000$ (if I'm wrong please correct me). Watch_Dogs is confirmed to come to PS3 and X360, but I don't think it will look as good on those consoles.

My question is: Can we really expect those same kind of graphics prowess on the next-gen consoles? Would Sony and Microsoft really be willing to sell those at high price? In this age of mobile and cheap gaming (I mean price, not quality), could those consoles be a success?

I mention Star Wars 1313 in the thread title, but it can also easily refer to the Luminous Engine Tech Demo from Square-Enix.

Easily assuming the machines are ~10x the current ones. I expect 1313 to be a launch title.
What 1st party studios are cooking up will look mindblowing.

You know, we were saying the same thing about that Final Fantasy VII tech demo way back in 2006. I'm sure next gen will be capable of Luminous Engine in real time, and by the end of next gen, that tech demo will look like garbage.

It's funny, I didn't notice anything spectacular about 1313. It wasn't till I saw all the "OMG GRAFFIX" posts on GAF did I look back and notice how nice it was, which, to be fair, is pretty damn nice.

Watch dog animations not possible on current gen RAM.

We probably can expect this stuff from Future Ass Creed due to the Ubisoft global super team setup. I expect first party stuff will... possibly. It's a game by game thing, but I expect no more than a handful of these 'AAAA' titles each year, unless stuff drastically changes.

Cutscene or gameplay?

Star Wars 1313 blew my mind the second I realized the gameplay was looking just as good as the cutscene, with no transition what-so-ever. Incredible stuff.

Did I mention that GameTrailers didn't even nominated the Luminous Engine Tech Demo for Best Graphics?

i think the character models have room for improvement, especially the eyes. but i like what im seeing in terms of physics, like in the cloth of the clothes.

It will take a little while before games are built from the ground up leveraging the Wii U's GPGPU architecture are released. I'd say by the end of 2013 at the earliest.

Did they nominate UE4? Because if not it's probably just a case of them not nominating engines/demos choosing instead to only accept actual games in development.

Edit: Bah, beaten.

Bare minimum, yes.

You are going to be disappointed with next gen consoles with these expectations. $1000+ PCs are even looking at SW1313 and stroking their pseudo-beards in curious apprehension of the requirements.

Love it.

If the consoles are terrible underpowered than of-course not.

But if they are as powerful as they should be (within reason) then you will see developers like Naughty Dog, Epic, 343i, Rocksteady, Crytek, etc making games on these systems towards the end of their life-cycle that look noticeably better than Agni's Philosophy in many ways.

Do I expect the 720/PS4 to be as powerful as the PC I am posting from? Hell no.

Do they have to be as powerful as the PC I am posting from to get the kind of leap I expect? Hell no. Not by a mile.

I'm guessing only a handful will look anywhere that good starting out in the first few years. The vast majority I think will just probably be games that will still come out on these consoles with the settings turned up.

but you said launch titles....don't change to goal post!

they shouldnt even bother with a next gen if thats not the minimum we can expect from it.
it will be 8 years by then, i cant justify buying a new console for a smaller jump.

definitely, unless they go all kinect and fortaleeza glasses.

How observant.

I said launch titles will look like Star Wars 1313, and end of cycle games will look closer to or better than Agni's Philosophy.

Where is the discrepancy?

I found 1313 more impressive visually than Agnis. If we get 1313 at the beginning of next gen, good lord at the rest of it.

I expect 1313 and Watch_Dogs to look almost as good on the current gen consoles as it does on high end PCs. Yes, it won't run in full HD and the frame rate will be below 30 fps during action scenes, but the overall look should be achievable with slight compromises. Just like Doom worked on Xbox even though PCs at that time were far superior, just like Just Cause looked pretty good on PS2, just like Battlefield 3 looks good on consoles despite the fact that the PC version is incredible.

Especially a narrow corridor shooter like 1313 can show off without many problems on old tech. That's how Uncharted and Tomb Raider achieve their look. And Star Wars has another advantage: Repetitive enemy design and textures. The rest is just a clever use of motion capturing (that's where all devs are in the learning process and where we will have the most advances in the coming years) and effects.

It's samey with Watch_Dogs. What's so special about that game's graphics? Realistic rain shaders can be done by anyone by now. Cloth physics? Been done since Sands of Time, perfected since the first Assassin's Creed. The rest is just a scripted game. Not saying it didn't look impressive, but next gen games will look much better.

Well if next-Gen consoles can't run it like that and only the highest of high-end PCs can run it like that then what is the point in spending a shitload of money to get it looking that good? To satisfy the small section of folks with $650 GPUs? Seems like an odd strategy. But for those guys/gals with the proper rig it's going to be one hell of a visual experience, that's for certain.

hahahaha

Remember all those 360 launch titles that looked like the tech demos? Because I don't. I just remember GUN and Kameo. It will take a while for the average console game toook like 1313, and only the biggest publishers will be able to afford it, and that's if the consoles are strong enough in the first place. They will not be as strong as a cutting edge PC.

I know what ya talking about, but I actually got disappointed when they started showing your everyday coverbased shooting.

i'm still not convinced we will see games at this visual level for a long ass time. For one, lucasarts might be cheating a bit with ILM helping them out. That is a pretty big deal.

And one a side note... anybody wanna guess how long the campaign will be for this?

I'm calling 3-5 hours. :/

Star Wars 1313 will be one of those titles that looks amazing but 2 years later we will be thinking "We thought that was impressive? WTF"

Gotta love launch titles.

Sony and MS don't have to make uber expensive consoles to run those games at a high visual fidelity. The fact that people can't believe such a thing is possible means we are ready for next-gen.

Selective memory you have when all you remember are two ports.

I seem to remember Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Call of Duty 2 being at launch as well.

Few Screens I took on launch day in 2005.

Perfect Dark Zero had some not too shabby textures as well, for a game plagued by development issues, and burdened by horrible art style.

Then there was Call of Duty 2
