[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

Cages have been rattled since E3. There is a situation of red alert on the internets, don't sweat it.

Can't wait to see the XL Frankenstick. Worse still, what if they don't even do one, and force the choice between lovely big screen and better battery, or tiny tim with crutches version.

Going back to non-dual analog portable will be an odd experience when I pick one of these mutha fuggers up. Glad I finally fucking learned and didnt get a Nintendo portable at launch. I WIN! I FINALLY BEAT YOU BASTARDS.

I held back too and i am glad i did, they announced it far sooner than i thought they would

I've been holding back ever since the DSi. I wanted to get a DSi XL but they were always too expensive. Of course it does mean that I'll have to buy the separate power adapter as well since I don't have one.

Battery Life is still semi-bad but no longer the totally unacceptable disaster that it was at launch. Thanks for beta testing the old version for us guys!

The battery life is better because the battery is bigger. There was no beta testing, battery tech has hit a brick wall for any device. Right now all you can do is make it bigger. Did you see how much of the body in the new Macbook Pro is battery? :P

No glorious matte finish white console for Europe?

no buy. and region locking on a portable is fucking nuts.

I don't even get why many of you guys are happy about that. A bigger screen with the same resolution sucks.

games on DSi XL look great, why can't 3DS XL do the same?

I was waiting for this to buy a 3DS, now I may have to wait to see what games are going to require a second analog to see if I wait for the final version as that 3ds circle pro is so ugly.

What games currently use it? Can you play Kingdom Hearts 3D without it?

I'll take larger pixels over arthritis any day!!

Well, I don't own a regular 3DS, just the old DSLite. I was fine with it but it's not the optimum. However, I'd never buy a system where they bust blow up the pixels to a much bigger screen. As a partial graphics whore, that goes against everything I believe in. I always hated that DS XL strategy and thought that it really is just for old people with sight problems.

Its interesting they are leaving the shops to price it again in the uk, the last time we ended up with a very expensive 3ds which they are still recovering from. This needs to be priced right ie around or just above current 3ds pricing or it will tank.

No game will require a second stick. If you prefer using it over standard controls, that's a whole another thing.

Oh, thank god.

So no screen scratching and bigger screens. If this thing has better 3D viewing angle and less ghosting that'd be the cherry on top.

Upping the resolution wouldn't help, since it plays original 3DS games.

Also the pixel density of this screen would still be exactly the same as 720p (most PS3/360 games) on a 47" TV.

I remember that it was actually marketed towards the older demographic in Japan. The DS XL apparently still sells well so this is probably them going "hey, by the XL version of the next system plox"

Oh, no white for North America? No straight up black? Nintendo is making the same bad decisions on colours that prevented me buying the Nintendo DSi XL which only had horrible colours like Bronze.

Yep. I bought on launch day, I want this for no more than £125. How much was the 3DS? £200?

Well atleast'people can stop waiting for the revision and buy the classic 3DS

Vita has convinced me that dual sticks is NOT the mobile gaming savior...
Nintendo probably feels this way too, and is waiting for its next console to provide dual sticks. I hope they find a better form factor than Vita, my hands are raped after playing Uncharted.

Hori grips. Hands won't cramp. Also makes the dual stick experience that much better. It also sucked playing on the 3DS without grips.

don't hate it, but, yeah, same size screen + dual stick would've likely would've sold me one sooner than this's gonna...

I'm somewhat happy with no dual sticks.

I really, really hope 3DS dies rapidly and Nintendo is forced to come up with a new handheld.

My only games on 3DS are Nintendo ones, and I do feel it's gonna stay this way (maybe some Layton, but I don't feel excited).

I want a new mobile experience. Nintendo games will keep me occupied but my library will probably end up around 20 games during the console's life time, at best.

thanks. doesn't look to hideous. Was really unhappy with how cramped my hands were. I have no problem with 3DS even though it's smaller and I have big hands.

I'm surprised people were actually expecting a second stick on a redesign. The CPP will support at most a handful of games, none of which are first party (apart from Kid Icarus, but only for left hand mode).

Remember, Sony didn't do it with PSP, so I wouldn't expect Nintendo...changing the control scheme could potentially cause *massive* fragmentation.

Two reasons makes me angry @ NOA
1. Its arriving in August while other regions will get it in July
2. Only two colors while other regions have a choice of three.

NOA direct was excellent but why do they have screw us on these matter I really don't know :/

I...I'm not sure if I like it...

Obviously the bigger screens and the matte are nice, but it looks...I don't know, maybe too curvy? Too Fisher Price? Something about it is odd, like the WiiU Game Pad. And I also prefer how current 3DS' always have a black top screen. I always thought it was random at first but I think it makes sense. Gives the top screen its own viewing space. Like watching a movie in a dark room; you're focused completely on the action and not its surroundings.

I loved the DSi XL, perhaps the best looking (and functioning) handheld released, but this I'm not so sure on...

not really expecting it, for pretty much the reason you state. but, for me, it would've been much more a selling point than just 'bigger'...

The main selling point for me is, bigger usually means more ergonomic. I can't play 3DS for too long without my hands cramping up, I usually play with the CPP attached just for more comfort. Also, it looks a bit more "grown up" and less "fisher-price-y".

This looks awesome. I really love my 3DS, but having something that prevents screen scratching? Big plus. It'll be awhile before I upgrade, but I look forward to reviews. Bigger screen without any resolution upgrade doesn't seem like too much to settle for as it should be able to play original 3DS games, right?

Nintendo might be assholes, but htey're not stupid.
At worst, games will look okay ; and bigger screens = less eyes strain.

Exactly, as long as the native resolution of the bigger display is the same as the 3DS, it will look fine, and sharp enough for most content. I'll be waiting for this to play Kingdom Hearts for sure.

Found a used red 3DS for ~~ $110/£70. I can't anywhere else to ask, should I go for it? I'm not interested in the XL/LL.

If you can afford the XL, I'd say get that.

If you can't, get the regular 3DS. Just remember that the regular 3DS has some design flaws, such as the screens touching etc.

Removing the potential for screen scratching was more important than adding a second stick to me, so I'll be getting an XL by the end of the year for Theatrhythm and eventually SMT IV.

Why would they not release the Silver for NA, but for other regions?

I want the silver one or would settle for black.
