There's really no argument against a second "joystick" in 2012. It's been a standard control scheme since the dual shock on the PlayStation One and gives developers more choice with their designs. The 3DS even has an add-on due to the mistake made with the original design of the machine combined with the demand for one, so Nintendo knows people want one.
It's a questionable absence.
On the original yes. But theres plenty of arguments why adding one in the middle of a life cycle is a bad move and the benefits are questionable against the problems it could cause.
(basically two seperate systems with some games exclusively aimed at the more expensive model)
