[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

I just don't see the point of this.

It's a larger 3DS. I have a 3DS and don't want it any larger because it barely fits in my pocket as is.

Where is the second stick so i don't have to use the circle pad pro?

Big screens. Bitches love dem big screens.

I still laugh at people who though there'd be a second stick.

I also laugh at people who think a second stick is necessary for the software the has released or would release.

Kingdom Hearts
Resident Evil
Metal Gear 3DS

Each one of these would be or is better with the CPP. Any 3D game with a controllable camera would be better with a 2nd analog.

Are people serious with this logic?

Resident Evil plays perfectly without one, if anything it makes it slightly scarier... I don't know about Kingdom Hearts, but the Metal Gear demo definitely needed one.

Where would the second circle pad go? Where the ABXY buttons are now? Or below them? It's pretty uncomfortable below them, trying it atm.

I'm fine with keeping the same resolution I guess. But has the 3d screen been improved with better viewing angles? THat would be a big thing for me

I want to sell my 3DS now for maximum profit to go towards an XL. But I don't want to lose my Ambassador status.

Any advice GAF?

I have the exact same dilemma. I'm assuming then that the Ambassador games are tied to the system and not to my Nintendo account? I've never messed with any Nintendo online shit so I have no idea how this works.

Also:

Buy it, transfer your games and Ambassador status from your 3DS then sell it?

Wait and see if you can transfer your ambassador status to the XL and if you can, buy it, transfer and sell your 3Ds

You guys are missing the point of wanting to sell the original 3DS now to maximize profit. The values of the original 3DS is going to tank (comparatively) once this thing comes out...

If all you are buying are Nintendo first party software, sure the 2nd stick doesn't make sense since a majority of their games do not have controllable cameras. It would have been a service to third parties who would have taken advantage of the right stick.

Resident Evil works perfectly without CPP, MGS 3D shouldn't be played on the 3DS in the first place because of its technical problems and Kingdom Hearts.. well, no idea, I don't care for that series, but it looks like it could benefit from it.

I am interested but it will be hard to give up my Zelda edition 3DS. Main reason I would get it is the bigger screen and hopefully better ergonomics. My hands kill me after playing for a little.

They're tied to the system, Nintendo sucks. You won't be able to trade it in or sell it early without losing all your stuff.

Unless they announce something drastic in the next few weeks.

There's really no argument against a second "joystick" in 2012. It's been a standard control scheme since the dual shock on the PlayStation One and gives developers more choice with their designs. The 3DS even has an add-on due to the mistake made with the original design of the machine combined with the demand for one, so Nintendo knows people want one.

It's a questionable absence.

Yep. Expect it in the next gen ds.

Will they release a new frankenstick for this?

I wonder how disastrous that'll look. The current frankenstick is already vile.

I think they don't actually see this as a revision, both models are meant to be coexisting and are just aimed at different needs. there is no "better" version, it's just a bigger 3DS.

eh, come on. we all no what 'no plans' means. it means 'no formally announced plans'. this is the first time we've been told 'no plans' right before an official announcement, and Nintendo certainly aren't the only people to have done it.

any time someone says 'no plans' just imagine that added 'lol' onto the end of it.

it's an unsurprising one though. Nintendo put out the frankenstick because third party developers wanted it. they've done, what with it? added a left handed player option for Kid Icarus? Anything else?

Look at Luigi's Mansion 2. the original game was heavily dual stick, and every time they show off LM2, they show it off being played with a single stick. i don't know that it even supports the frankenstick.

when the frankenstick was announced, i thought for sure the next revision would include a second stick... but when Nintendo completely ignored it themselves? i knew it wasn't going to be mandatory any time soon and didn't bother buying one. the frankenstick was a bone they threw third party developers, nothing more.

I guess they'll be releasing another second stick add-on to fit that thing.

Looks good, I might have to get one once the nicer colours comes out, bother that red+black nonsense

I still am not looking forward to playing DS games on that screen. Gonna look like some shit

again, for the millionth time, no they won't.

In default stretched mode, yes. But if you boot them whilst holding down select or start, it displays them in 1:1 mode. On the 3DS XL, this means the display will be IDENTICAL in size and quality to the DS Lite display.

RE plays perfectly without it.

Metal Gear sucks.

Not interested in KH.

No need for a second stick.

Why are people saying they won't get it because of no second stick?

They realize that very few games, if any, will support it from now on?

You did type this right? lol

I played through Resident Evil entirely with Gyro controls. Best part of that whole game. It brought a new feel and challenge to what would have been a stale and somewhat lackluster game. Feeling my body tense up and seeing how it affected my aim was cool.

This sort of thinking, this rule of thumb, this blanket style game design talk just doesn't hold up. Here's an argument against the second stick, it's not needed. Here's another argument, it's not standard on handhelds. Here's another argument, those devs who make games around it won't be making many games in that style for the 3DS. Here's another argument, the DS has many games that have used the touch screen in equal or better ways than a second stick. (e.g. Metroid Prime Hunters, Geometry Wars, and Kid Icarus.) The 3DS also has alternative control options devs should consider (gyro controls in Resident Evil).

The second stick for look and camera controls has its own design problems. I've never been satisfied with how many 3rd person action games and first person games controlled. Mario 3D Land and Mario Galaxy do much better things with camera by taking control away and designing around that.

I guess i'm fine with the size, i mean i don't even play on the go anymore, 95% of the time i play at home anyways! For quick on the go gaming people have their I-phones and whatnot anyway... It's not like you'd be playing in depth engrossing RPGs on the bus or something...

Everything Nintendo does is perfect and should not be questioned.

yep. i'll get one if a game i want really benefits from it, but nothing announced has me interested. i like my portables portable. the same reason i don't want an XL is the same reason i don't want a frankenstick.

not to mention that the game was clearly designed and balanced around one stick, and not dual analogue aiming, just like RE4 and RE5. if MGS3 wasn't a crap port, i'd probably have picked one up, but it's a crap port. i'd rather not need one, and all the games i have do not feel like they need one even if they support it.

It has the space for the second stick and some games already use them. It would be nice to at least have the option of the second stick there, especially for games like Kingdom Hearts. So will Nintendo be making a Circle Pad Pro XL, that would bulk the console even further. You would have to play it like a laptop
lol

Oh look, your opinion means that everyone feels the same way.

I want this but mostly for playing non-stretched VC/DS games. I wish they'd have pushed to 4GB internal so I could fit all my DSiWare on it. Also the US color schemes aren't great. :/

So, Circle Pad Pro LL for Monster Hunter 4 launch?

Just played the Kingdom Hearts demo. I'm sorry but it is not as much fun without seeing where the enemies are. The shoulder button camera is NOT adequate.

It boggles my mind why they wouldn't add another thumbstick. This time there is no excuse, it is barely a cost saving measure and there is plenty of room on the new XL.

I see a spot for it, it is right there below the ABXY. RIGHT THERE.

It's a pass for me. Otherwise it looks like a sexy piece of hardware.

I guess all my 3D games will be played on Vita all things considered. And the 2/2.5D games will be on 3DS. Which is ironic.

No need for a second stick.

If you want to be top class in Revelations, it's CPP or bust. I guess it depends on how you play your games that dictates whether the stick is relevant or not.

I'm melting down more about the colors than the lack of a second slide pad at this point, but I see where you guys are coming from. They wouldn't be splitting the market if they still require companies to support a 1-pad scheme primarily with the option for second pad controls...just as they are doing now.

How ugly is the CPP attachment for this thing going to be?

As ugly as the North American color options?
