Honestly, the 3DS XL looks like it was redesigned to fit with the WiiU if and when they would like to do a FourSwords Style interconnect. If you don't have a extra GamePad, and have a 3DS/3DS XL, just sync it in. Hopeful dreaming, but still...

To be fair, Kid Icarus is basically the only 1st party game released since CPP came out that could reasonably take advantage of it. Spirit Camera, Fire Emblem and Mario Tennis really have no need for it, and neither do the next slate of releases (Culdcept, Calciobit, Oni Training, NSMB2).

LM2 I'm worried about since it subs in tilt controls, but even then games that use the CPP were rarely demoed with them anyway (RER, MGS3, KH3D). Hopefully it's still an option on the table.
 
I'm getting a little confused from conflicting messages in OP, will NA have the AC adapter included? And pardon my ignorance, I'm assuming the AC adapter is there just so you don't have to lug around the dock??

I really wish they would have made silver/black or white available in NA, why do they always do this with the colors? grr. I will probably just get the red/black (I've held out this long, something I never do on Nintendo systems, but I really like the 3DS XL).

Kid icarus was unplayable due to the fact that the touchscreen aiming and camera control used a fucking deadline and motions to turn instead of a tried and true fps proven control method.

It was so mind bogglingly stupid that I still can't understand how the company that made Metroid Prime Hunters was able to fuck up something so basic.

I played enough shooters (first and third person) on DS to know that a second analog stick is not needed at all if developers have the brains to use the touchscreen for that function.

Again, would it be nice to have a second analog stick? Yeah absolutely!

Do I care? Only if developers are too retarded to actually think for 5 seconds about how to use a touchscreen to their advantage. Which, I give you that is very often on the 3DS.
It seems like most of them, Sakurai included forgot that on the DS there were more than enough games that allready showed how fast, responsive and oftentimes comfortable camera control on the touchscreen can be.

That's all fine but you forgot something whilst you were extolling the virtues of single stick + touchscreen: left handed people.

Single stick + touchscreen is fucking useless for us lefties. Well, unless you add a second analogue stick, that is. Works fine then.
 
how come no one has said anything about the stylus?
dont the 3ds uses a metal stylus? and the xl im seeing uses the plasticy crap from the ds days
 
i just hope they fix the shitty loose screen hinge and the janky dpad.

edit: oh and a bottom bezel that doesn't mark the top screen! It's a shame how poorly the original 3DS was designed :P

Yeah, the bigger screen, bigger pricetag, and slightly better battery doesn't seem to outweigh the increased size of the unit. 2nd stick would've made it a no-brainer.

But I'll reserve judgement until reviews come out. Maybe the screen is better for reasons other than size (3D effect, contrast, viewing angle, etc).

to be fair, does Kid Icarus use it in the way that people who want the system to have two sticks would want it used? for 90% of the people that bought Kid Icarus the CPP offered them absolutely nothing. many many many people wanted the game to use the CPP for dual stick aiming and it doesn't do that. it's a pretty clear indication of Nintendo's feelings towards it i think.

LM2 we haven't even been given a hint that it might use it. i hope it does, but until we see some evidence that it does, i'm not getting my hopes up.

Strangely enough, with Kid Icarus it was less disconerting for me to suck it up and play it with my right hand on the stylus than try to put my right hand on character movement and my left hand on camera/aim. The nondom hand situation was more easily overcome than the mental gymnastics of switching duties for my hands.
 
Despite all the hate on this, I'm so tempted to pick one up if there are some good holiday deals for it... which I'm sure there will be. Either price drops or bundles, I'll finally jump on the 3DS bandwagon I think.

That's why I said for me. I'm no leftie, and that's why I absolutely agree with most lefties (those who aren't able to use their right hand for anything else than holding stuff and maybe press a button here and there) Everyone of my friends who is left handed uses the same control scheme like me, but I honestly feel bad for those who can't achieve this level of fine control over their right hand. I don't want to sound condescending or anything.

Again, would it be better to have a second stick? Absolutely, anyone denying that is crazy.

Does it bother me personally? No.

I was waiting for it. I won't be waiting anymore (or buying the 3DS). What a disappointment. 3D games need camera controls and the touch screen is just not an acceptable substitute for a second stick, in my opinion. Look at all the empty device real-estate on the new iteration, just like the DSiXL. I realize that it isn't so easy to equip it with another stick, as they've introduced games into the market that use the IR bus for the second stick's input, but it would be better to re-engineer the console and patch those games now (or simply abandon legacy support for them, since that appears to be what they're doing at the moment, unless they announce an XL right analog stick IR accessory--sheesh), rather than wait and potentially exacerbate the problem.
 
Absence of second stick is really disappointing - not just for 3ds games, but for the possibility of using the 3dsxl as a controller for the Wii U.
 
Also, how is the brightness of the 3DS? Can you play it outside? Like almost every device I take outside I can't see cause of the sunlight.

I'll mostly play in my room with it, but just asking. Yeah, really not a handheld gamer.

Wow, that top one makes it look a lot thicker than I imagined. I'm really not liking the look of it, particularly the white one. Red one is okay I guess. Disappointing they could squeeze in more battery with that much space.

What's interesting is that although the original DS took a lot of design cues from the GBA SP, the 3DS XL is more reminiscent of the DSi XL instead of the expending on the multi-tier approach they tried with the original 3DS.

Five brightness settings and they range a lot. 3DS is playable on nearly any environment.

Kid Icarus is a competitive shooter designed around stylus control, lefty options are really the only reasonable CPP support anyone should have expected. Anyone using dual analog would be rightfully destroyed online or even in the campaign's higher difficulties, regardless of load out and skill level. I don't think lack of dual analog is really an indicator of anything here, except Sakurai refusing to placate the ignorant brocore.

I'll agree on LM2 though. Tilt camera smells like another needless and inferior SPD control insertion (see: DKCR's waggle roll), and they tend not to budge on those. :(

Even outside? I live in Texas, so the sun can be pretty intense, specially the summer. :P Would be nice to play it on the patio, but not a deal breaker.

The finish is! If its really matte, so bought, if its glossy. No thanks you.

Thank god they came out and said the A/C adapter will ship with the US version. I don't know why it's still not going to be shipped with the European and Japanese models. Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm most likely going to get the 3DS XL now since I do almost all of my portable gaming at home. I'm glad I waited for some kind of revision and the right amount of games to be available.
 
Reading some of the comments here, makes me realize that some people are just so irrational brand loyal, that it is no wonder why big companies like Apple or Nintendo can screw customers with half-cooked revisions over and over again and get away with it...

Well, I have played in the sunlight on the brightest setting, and it looks fine, although my area probably doesn't have as much intense sun as yours.

It's definitely not unplayable, though.

£128 actually..
...plus $199.99 doesn't include sales tax...and I'd be very surprised if we don't see some retailers selling it in the UK for £159 or less (which in real terms is only £5 more than the US taking our 20% VAT rate into account).
