[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

Do DS games not scale on the 3DS screen? Meaning, will you be getting borders when playing a DS game on a 3DS XL?

You can either upscale the image, or play them in the native DS resolution. If you upscale, which is the default mode on 3DS, the image will be stretched and look like shit. If you press Select or Start while booting up a DS game, they will be displayed in their native resolution and there will be black borders.

I think there must be a way to charge it via a USB, does it have a micro USB slot.

It would be a crazy decision to sell an item with no way of charging!!!

Matte always looked and felt cheap to me. I love the 3DS transparent layers and the Vitas glossiness. It seems the xl will be Matte, and the lid cover won't be the same as the inside of the console (I'm OCD about matching colors lol). The white one is all white though.....

What a dilemma...maybe I'll buy one but keep my old one too.

So they fixed the 3D is fucked up if it isn't surrounded by a black border?

The 3DS XL still looks uncomfortable as shit to use just by looking at the pics.

No second analog.

I don't think I'm going to get one.

Oh. I'd rather stretch the image. Does the 3D scale not help hide some of the graphical impurities? I loathe a game not fitting the entire screen. Hence I never play PS2 on my HD TV for this very reason.

Hm, that's the exact opposite of me.

I can't really get attatched to overly shiny devices but good matte designs that feel good to the touch feels personal and relaxing.

DS games will actually look good on this screen. Play DS games without scaling and the screen size should be at least the size of DSi screen.

Well, you'll get black borders on the top screen no matter what. DS games are made for 4:3 screens, and the top 3DS screen is widescreen. It would break some games if you didn't get black borders on the top screen.

DS games will look way worse if you choose to stretch the image. The image quality is complete shit when you do so. It's a bit weird at first to play with big black borders on a handheld, but you'll get used to it.

If I'm reading the numbers correctly, it's slightly smaller than the DS XL, right?

I definitely like the reduced bezel on the top screen. I don't think resolution will be an issue for me, as I'll likely be mainly using it for exclusives, so there won't be a hi-res versions of the games to make them look inferior.

Any word on if the cameras are gettting a resolution increase?

The regular 3DS cameras take relatively poor pictures, but the screen can definitely display much higher quality 3-D pictures/video than can be taken with the system currently.

You can transfer hats for another 3DS hardware or only games?

If you transfer everything than the hats come, too. That's my understanding, at least.

Great news! I was going to wait until Paper Mario came out and see if there was any news of a revision then, but I think I'll just pick this up on release.

I'll give them my 3DS and £40 for this XL. I would have went a little higher if there was a second analogue slider.

If the trade in price is any higher than that, then they can get stuffed. (well, I'll still be tempted)

Looks great, screen size is awesome.... (i porbaly won't be getting it as i already have a 3DS.. but i know now what the wife is going to want for her birthday)

Also No power adapter??? Seem like a rather wierd ommission (9.99 sold at most retailers).... so why the exlusion i wonder...

The 3DS screen is pretty shitty as it is, I need to see one of these in person to be convinced it won't be horrible looking. The DSi XL got away with extreme pixelation because thats how the games looked anyways. The only way I possibly get this is if I can't wait for the Dragon Quest Monsters remake and feel the itch to import, and I'll get a Japanese XL in the process.

The comparison between screens would be something like this, right?

I'm pretty sure now that there won't be another revision with a second analog stick, so I'll get this one. The circle pad extension apparently was not really that successful/needed.

Didn't like that extra round edges on the DSi XL and I don't like them here, though. Why not shape them more the DS Lite way?

I knew it was coming. Glad battery life will be better. I'll buy it.

Have to laugh at those who were so sure the 3DS would not be redesigned.

well i knew a redesign would hit but the direction they went is a little disappointing for me personally.

was expecting cheaper, smaller(thickness), 2 analog and slicker design.

instead its the opposite, more expensive, larger, single analog and the contour makes it look like a makeup compact.

Cheaper?! No way that was going to happen. It's cheaper than the original 3DS price, at least.

luckily i dont even use the cpp with my regular 3ds so i haven't been spoiled by using one. That means that I'll gladly pony up for an upgrade as long as the 3D works good.

This will be my first handheld since a GBA SP. Do you guys recommend screen protectors? I remember them being a bitch to put on. I think the screen even became slightly scratched trying to get them on. Its humid where I live, so air bubbles are a constant thing to rid of. I might just leave it off and just not touch the screen.
