Secret best feature of 3ds XL: ds games will now be 'playable' at 1:1.

How does actual video size compare between using a DSi XL and 3DS XL for DS games? I'm still using a DSLite (because of GBA compatibility) but wanted to switch over to the DSi XL. I've played DS games on it and they are a great size for what I want.

I've never liked the 3DS screen size (too small) for either 3DS games or DS games (which look especially small).

How much smaller do DS games look on a 3DS XL vs DSi XL? I'm mostly interested in DS gaming, so I don't want 3DS games to have a major influence in the decision on what to get. If the difference in video size is negligible, then I'll probably go for the 3DS XL to have bonus 3DS games availability.

1:1 should be comparable to your ds lite.

I feel like im the only person on the planet who thinks DS games look good on a 3ds, though I only own 2d games more or less, what am I missing? I have a ds lite, XL and 3ds -_-

They don't look good, but it's passable enough to me. The faint upscale blur is a hell of a lot less problematic than say...the eye searing pain that is the Wii on any even remotely modern display.

It's also game by game basis. Like those 3d square Enix games look terrible on 3ds. But games that are 2d with thick black lines look fine(twewy, Mario Luigi).

You guys are really excited by this? The thing's enormous and you still only get screen real estate, what, the size of an original DS or so?

I don't know, if I was really concerned about having a good way to play DS games I'd still just keep one around.

It's much closer to the DSi, to be honest. Cross-posting from the 3DS XL thread:

I did some quick calculation with regards to pixel density:

Original 3DS = 132 ppi
3DS XL = 96 ppi
DSi = 98 ppi

...that means that 1:1 mode for DS/DSiWare games will be comparable to playing the game on a DSi. Here's a mock-up I made to visualize the difference.

So many threads I'm not sure where to ask this, but:

How do I copy the files on the SD card in my 3DS to a larger SD card? It's not just click and drag, is it?

But isn't there another problem of colours not looking right on the 3DS? I wonder if this revision will solve that.

they'll look identical to how they did on the lite.

yeah and it's fucking tiny. on the XL, it will be the correct size due to the bigger screens.

God dammit. I want a 3DS. But the XL looks terribad. But I have a sweet ass library of DS titles. :|

All of your settings, games, and information excluding your credit card information transfers when you do a system transfer with the 3DS. That means you'll be able to play your Ambassador games.

IIRC, save files won't be transferred, though (game will be reset). At least not for DSiWare (not sure about 3DSWare).

Can someone explain this to me. I presume the 3DS displayed DS games squashed or something? 1:1 implies that the 3DS XL will be able to display DS games pixel for pixel right?

The 3DS already does that, but because of resolution + screen size, the resulting 1:1 picture is too small (think of playing games on a GB micro).

The 3DS XL, having a bigger screen (bigger pixels), will display the 1:1 picture at a more comfortable size for your eyes (because the 1:1 image displayed will be larger).

Ah, OK. So it does nothing the standard model can't, it's just the actual pixels are physically bigger. Surely the 3DS flattered the DS image then? More so than the new model?

Gotcha. Any word on build quality? Scratched screens, dodgy d-pads and squeaky casings were very un-Ninty traits of the old model, I hope they've pick up their game.

Nintendo will never make a game in-house that uses it. (Kid Icarus was Sora, and support was thrown in at the last minute.) If they wanted a second stick for first party games, they would have built it into the system from the get-go. The CPP is purely for third party developers.

By my calculations... someone correct me if I made a mistake

GBA = 97 ppi

GBA Micro = 144 ppi

DS Lite =107 ppi

DSi = 98 ppi

DSi XL = 76 ppi

3DS = 132 ppi

3DS XL = 96 ppi

yep everybody take a look at the pixels on a DSi or the GBA, the pixels on a 3DS XL will be almost the same size.

Compare that to the DSi XL's low ppi of only 76.

Will playing DS games on the 3DS XL be comparable to playing them on a DSi XL? That's still my favourite way of playing DS games. It's comfortable to hold, the screens are big, and the picture isn't that bad considering it's been blown up.

what if it doesn't support DS games?

I know it's like 99% impossible; but it's Nintendo and creamsugar said something about buying 3DSs now if we want BC compatibility with DS games...

I will be so furious, SO furious if it doesn't support DS games; cause this 1:1 play at a reasonable screen size is almost the only reason I will be getting an XL

Awesome Day 1!

I just have a few questions:

1. Can I import my ambassador games to it?
2. Does this revision have a 2nd stick?
3. Is the bigger screen the same resolution as the regular 3DS?
4. Does it come with an AC adapter?

I just hope you can scale the image to fit the window, stretch or not. I hate black boarders!

And that would be pretty foolish to take out DS game play out of the XL.

I assume they would have said if it didn't support DS games.

It would be a crazy thing to do when a DS Pokemon game is coming out soon.

The colors on DS games look fine if you have the screen's power saver mode off. The stretched pixels are what makes it look runny, and ideally a bigger screen could fix that.

what? I didn't know that!! O_o

I'll check that as soon as I get home. Thanks!

yes, you can transfer almost everything from one 3DS to another one... though, you need to have access to both of them at the same time to do the transfer.

2. Does this revision have a 2nd stick?
Nope, hope Nintendo makes a CPP XL addon if you want another stick

3. Is the bigger screen the same resolution as the regular 3DS?
Same resolution

4. Does it come with an AC adapter?
Do you live in North America? If so yes.

I was thinking here, and this is crazy, but could this feature be available in the normal-sized 3DS, through a firmware update maybe?

Reggie confirmed DS compatibility in the Nintendo Direct video. When he was talking about Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, he said that Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL owners can look forward to Pokédex 3D Pro and Pokémon Dream Radar.

Speaking of that... isn't it weird as hell that there were DSi-exclusive games that even had different style box art? I think I only saw one of them.... there couldn't have been more than 4-5.

Only 4 of the 5 were released, though i've only seen System flaw in stores.
