Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

I dont know why but Rich Gallup is always in my "people you may know" section on Linkedin.

I dont work in the games industry... I dont have friends on Linkedin who work in the games industry or in america.

Maybe I was googling him a few years ago and found his profile or something but I dont remember. He is just always there when I log onto the site.

I guess there is a "nah I dont know this guy" button somewhere but I dont. Its nice to be reminded of Rich whenever I am sorting through clearly scam job offers.

Watching jar time, I'm now wondering who's on Jeff's short list of potential future hires. Giancarlo comes to mind; the GB guys seem to like working with him.

Who else fits Jeff's description though? McElroy I guess, but I doubt he's leaving Polygon anytime soon.

I don't see anything. 1 minute and 4 seconds? 1 hour and 4 minutes? Is this from the full TNT video?

It was more like an hour and six minutes. Just be patient. It's a story about a man and his PS2 keyboard.

Gotta think he still has Rorie in mind. And hopefully Shane Bettenhausen. While I'm not sure Shane would be interested in going back to the press, he would be a perfect fit at GB; great on camera and on mic, not afraid to speak up, argumentative in a fun way, a DEEP knowledge of the industry and its history, and totally into weird stuff that no one else at GB is. He would also be able to bring in a developer/publisher perspective, after now having spent like five years on that side of the field. I'd love for this to happen.

Jeff Green would also be a good pick.

Does Giant Bomb really need more people?

... Yes? Like... very much so? They do way more than produce a few videos and a podcast a week. There's lot of scheduling, appointments, communication with who knows how many publishers and developers, running the actual site itself...

How much better would things be if they had more people at E3? More people for the holiday rush? More people to review games that they don't have time for? To cover handhelds and indie games and mobile games better?

Actually, now that I think about it, I guess what they probably need more than anything is another person to produce video content with Vinny and Drew. Video Reviews probably generate the most traffic/clicks, and they hardly ever do them. But you can be sure you'll get a few a year, especially during the holiday season, and always one of the latest CoD. It would be stupid not to.

Edit: Moreover, as Jeff spoke to during the latest Jar Time, there are basic and obvious management reasons to get more people around. Covering vacations is the most obvious; making sure the site doesn't go to shit when one person is pulled out. So, while it's "slow" during the spring/summer, that's when people take the bulk of their vacation time, and when it's busy, all hands on deck to bring the best coverage possible.

Does Giant Bomb really need more people?
The Whiskey situation worked out real nice for them where they could keep the core staff small while still utilizing Will, Norm, Rorie, Joey, Kessler, Lemon, etc. to fill in gaps as needed. Last few months have shown that any distractions, professional or otherwise, causes the content on the site to dip pretty dramatically with 5-6 people trying to do everything. Dave being knee deep in the site redesign means we won't get as much on camera time from him, either.

Can't just add anyone though obviously. Jar Time vid tells me Jeff gets that, they're trying to expand the right way and they'll wait for the right people if they have to.

I think its the official giantbomb message that they want to hire more people so they can do even more content.

But they have been producing less and less regular scheduled content as the years go by even though they hired more people so I dont know whats going on.

Another video guy would probably be my pick. The last few months have shown if ether of those guys are away stuff goes to hell pretty quick.

But the site doesnt need another guy to talk about video games.

I guess if they hired another guy they can take Vinny off the bombcast and permanently put him behind the membership paywall.....

I wouldn't mind more Giantbomb people if they could pump out more content. I'm not sure if they're still in the transition phase and are getting settled. Some types of videos are all but absent, like video reviews and such.

Jeff has already indicated a few times that one of the reasons that he doesn't take vacations is that he feels guilty as hell doing so, because he knows that the amount of content on the site is going to take a hit.

As much as people have been bitching about the lack of content over these past few months, I have little doubt that the team has the same issues and problems, probably to a greater extent. Lately, you can see the frustrations coming out in the tone and edges of some of the stuff people are saying, if you ask me.

This is what I was thinking. I certainly don't want or need anyone else on the bombcast, I think 5 is a crowd as it is.

I just realized that there's a possibility of them hiring Sessler, what with all the recent talk of them needing more people and all.

:O.

What does Sessler bring? They need someone who knows, REALLY knows games like DOTA, sports (maybe) and gaps that they feel the current staff don't have knowledge in.
Sessler is great but too much hyperbole and stuttering and overtalking. It took a whole year to get that out of Patrick, I don't want him to regress.
Honestly get a disgruntled ex-game developer that has better knowledge of game systems, frame data, SDKs and the pitfalls of making a game.

Oh. My. Goodness.

This would be the greatest thing ever. I hope they would allow him to do his soapbox show again.
