I think Chapels and Cavern is good enough. Putting Plains in there is going to make Messenger (and you!) super unhappy. 8 lands is plenty for a splash, especially if it's at 4CMC

You're right that the Plains are terrible. Unfortunately, your land count needs to be pretty low as is, so you're likely to need those Caverns to cast Messenger a lot of the time anyway. All in all, it's a pretty bad idea. Don't listen to me.

Seriously though, just play Restoration Angel in everything. You'll hit a lot more than you'll miss.

Yup, there was a cycle of all ten color pairs in Ravnica and we think (know?) that they're coming back for...well...the Return to Ravnica. Also I don't know if you noticed but they actually count as the land types of their colors, so you can grab them with a "search for a Forest" effect or whatever

Oh wow, even better! So when Ravinca hits, each duo colors will have 2 duoland
dolan?!
cards? I'm ok with this.

Started trying out a new infect brew:

Working out pretty good so far. I think this deck will really take off once M13 hits and I can stuff some rancors in there. I've been hesitant to buy another 2 BoP until I know they are getting reprinted hence the 2 birds 2 elves thing.

No Inkmoths? Since you have blue, I'd play that blue spell with the flashback to make your creature unblockable. I know blighted agent is already unblockable but it would suck if you pumped it up only for it to get bounced or killed off. Some form of hexproof would protect him. I would maybe sideboard Viridan Corrupter and put in Rotwolf or the 2/3 Crystal something something. I like the deck though and was going to rebuild my G/B infect deck around Wild Defiance.

I have too. Not sure what the deal is with the sudden reemergence.

Infect has always been in my heart! With so many other dominant decks out there, I don't get why infect gets so much hate. ;[
Was introduced to mtg with an infect deck. :P

Anyone has any Geralf's Messanger or Restoration Angel for trade? I've been fiending for them. @_@

I've had 2012 on Steam for a while now, and just got the iPad demo yesterday ... and I'm still rubbish. The tutorial seems to better explain how to use the controls to existing MTG players but for a complete newbie like me, it was awful.

So I watched the official videos on the MTG website and I've got a bit of a better grasp on it, but not even close to beating the very first battle in the campaign on 2012.

My problem seems that I don't know when I'm supposed to use my creatures, I think. And also that my creatures only seem to be weaklings with stats like 1/2 whereas the AI has 5/5 without any special cards being used to boost stats.

Are there any good guides out there which go into very basic strategy? Or a video showing a game run-through? I've had a look but the only things I can find are the basic overview or actual in-depth knowledge.

I'd love to get into this game but it's just more frustrating than fun at the moment. I'm going to check out the first post but wondering if there's anything more recent or better now?

What decks are you playing as and what decks are you playing against?

Different schemes and colors need to play differently against different schemes and colors. Strategy, more so the 'when' to play 'what', is pretty important in some matchups.

I've not really settled on what deck is best suited to me, I tend to just dabble between them and see what I can pick up. I should probably just choose one and stick to it for now though.

The first deck I'm up against is a red deck (apologies for lack of any technical speak, I really am a newbie).

No need to apologize. It's been a while since I've played 2012, so I'm afraid I can't speak specifically on strategy. The green decks are usually pretty beginner friendly though -- they have a ton of big creatures that can withstand red damage spells -- give it a shot and see if it helps.

Cheers, will do!

Yeah, feel free to frequently ask any questions you have about strategies or specific cards in here. This thread is pretty much always active with at least one of us who knows the game really well.

On a very basic level, I'm in the middle of a game and I've got enough mana to use Serra Angel.

I've got 20 health, AI has 15. I feel like I've got the better creatures in play at the moment. So when is the best time to use the Serra Angel? It's a fair bit better than Kor Hookmaster and Kitesail Apprentice and can cause more damage. Or is there likely to be any kind of situation where I'd need to call on a more powerful card?

Hookmaster is best to use when you need to use its ability. Treat it like a spell that has a creature attached.

Dropping Serra's almost certainly correct unless you need to lock down an opponent's creature. (Magic is incredibly situational.)

Cast the Serra Angel now unless you have a better card in your hand currently that you should play instead. If you draw a more powerful card next turn you can play it as well.

These are reasons you wouldn't necessarily want to play the Angel:
-You have something better to play this turn instead
-You think your opponent has a kill spell and you want to see if they'll waste it on a weak creature before you play your strong one
-You want to keep your lands untapped to bluff your opponent into thinking you have an Instant they should be afraid of (not usually something you want to do with the DotP AI)

Excellent, thanks for the tips so far, much appreciated!

Just one more question. Is there a point in NOT putting a land card down? The in-game tutorial basically tells you off if you try to continue without playing a land card. I have the feeling the AI does hold back land card as it always seems to have more cards in hand than I do (currently has 4 cards in hand to my 2).

At your level of play no, there's no reason to not put a land down. Especially against an AI. You pretty much always want as many lands as possible, more mana means bigger spells and more spells per turn.

BoP isn't in M13. This thread shows all the green cards starting with the letter B are taken.

The main reason you'd ever hold onto a land is if it is the last card in your hand and you don't have anything on the field that you could use the mana on. Having the opponent see a card in your hand that could be something they have to play around is generally better than having an extra land on the ground that won't do anything.

There are also cards that have effects that trigger when a land is played (called Landfall) that you might theoretically want to hold onto a land for.

Yup, these are the two basic reasons. I didn't mention Landfall but thinking about it if he's playing 2012 there are Landfall cards in that game right?

!!!

FINALLY! I won a match on the PC version!!!

HUGE thanks to you all for your tips so far, I might hang around and annoy you all a little more in the future ;)

Edit: I changed the privileges on kicker.exe to run as administration and the update downloaded fine.

Loaded up MTGO today for the first time in a few months and after logging in I get a message:

"Error L0003: You are running an older version of the game. Please exit, run the kicker and choose the repair option.

I found the kicker and ran it but then get a message:

"Could not check for updates. Error trying to check files. Error:FileError"

I'm doing a search now but was wondering if anyone came across this before and had a fix. thx

Sorceries? I can't really think of any, but if you're looking for nonbasic land hate:
well ive had these three Burning Wishes that i had never used before, so i picked up one more off ebay and have been on a sorcery buying spree. figured wishing for a Price of Progress could be nice.

pleasant memory about my Price of Progress. I won a game casting it and th guy took it so bad he packed his stuff cursing me out. everyone was dead quiet till he walked out of the comic shop and then burst out laughing. he was always a jerk to us.

My opponent cast Rite of Replication and kicked it. He targets his Primeval Titan. I cast reverberate in response and copy his spell. I also target his Primeval Titan. I get 5 6/6 tokens right? Or does my opponent gets 10 6/6? I'm really hoping its the former.

You get five tokens. You controll the spell you copied, so the tokens enter the battlefield under your control.

You both get 5 Primeval Titan tokens and a shitton of lands.

Oh awesome, didn't know Chapin was commentating this weekend. Usually the people doing it are just awful, but he's one of the ones that is legitimately fun to listen to or watch.

If it's been copied while it's on the stack w/ a paid kicker cost, he gets the kicker.

If it hasn't been kicked, he does not have the option to pay the kicker.

Ah, but if you copy an x casting cost does it copy the x? Because I thought in that instance the X is always set to zero but since you're copying on the stack does that also copy that or no?

When you copy a spell with any kind of fork effect it copies any extra costs associated with it. So if you fireball for 5 and fork it, the copy is also a fireball for 5.

EDIT: That guy just vapor snagged a resto angel? Uh?

8/15/2010: Reverberate can target (and copy) any instant or sorcery spell, not just one with targets. It doesn't matter who controls it.

8/15/2010: When Reverberate resolves, it creates a copy of a spell. You control the copy. That copy is created on the stack, so it's not "cast." Abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell won't trigger. The copy will then resolve like a normal spell, after players get a chance to cast spells and activate abilities.

8/15/2010: The copy will have the same targets as the spell it's copying unless you choose new ones. You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. If, for one of the targets, you can't choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).

8/15/2010: If the spell Reverberate copies is modal (that is, it says "Choose one --" or the like), the copy will have the same mode. You can't choose a different one.

8/15/2010: If the spell Reverberate copies has an X whose value was determined as it was cast (like Earthquake does), the copy has the same value of X.

8/15/2010: You can't choose to pay any additional costs for the copy. However, effects based on any additional costs that were paid for the original spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy too. For example, if a player sacrifices a 3/3 creature to cast Fling, and you copy it with Reverberate, the copy of Fling will also deal 3 damage to its target.

8/15/2010: If the copy says that it affects "you," it affects the controller of the copy, not the controller of the original spell. Similarly, if the copy says that it affects an "opponent," it affects an opponent of the copy's controller, not an opponent of the original spell's controller.
