I have begun enjoying AVR drafting. It's not as popular as INN/INN/DKA, so the cards are worth more, meaning an above-average drafter can profit on it quite a bit... and you can almost always force U/G and have fun doing it. This is hilarious.

I'm getting into modern since it appears to be -much- cheaper (and less of an investment liability) than standard. Does anyone here know anything about the format, or should I just throw something together out of my 10 F&L decks I've been buying up at 3tix each? Here's what I'm thinking, based on a few tournament results: (pretty much pasted together lists)

22 lands: considering a cut to 21, dno about stronghold and haven't done the math
4 Arid Mesa
4 Marsh Flats
4 Scalding Tarn
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Clifftop Retreat
3 Plains
1 Mountain
1 Slayers' Stronghold

26 dudes:

4 Figure of Destiny
4 Goblin Guide
4 Steppe Lynx
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
2 Mirran Crusader
3 Grim Lavamancer
3 Ranger of Eos
2 Goblin Bushwacker

12 spells:
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Path to Exile

SB:
3 Burrenton Forge-Tender
1 Combust
2 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Kataki, War's Wage
3 Molten Rain
2 Pillar of Flame
1 Ranger of Eos
1 Relic of Progenitus

What? Maybe it's where you're drafting? There's no way you force U/G unless you don't mind the deck sucking. And I don't know about profiting that much, it still depends on what you open. I've gotten literally shit all 3 drafts I've gone to. I think I've kept on rare and it was a herald of war and that's it.

Just make the plunge and get into Legacy. No better feeling that looking how much a real dual land is worth years after you bought it. My investment portfolio has less growth potential than your average dual.

MTGO. 1775 limited rating. I am U/G around 50% of the time, I drift into another color if I pull a bomb or it's obviously open.

i had assumed that Grim Monolith is restricted.

btw i havent played in maybe eight years and am now just learning about all these new cards. the thing that mostly bugs me is artifacts not being brown.

anyway i looked at the "vintage" list which im guessing used to type two? and Grim Monolith is not there. seems like it should be. or maybe im just jaded that i only own one.

Legal in Vintage, Legacy, Commander, and Urza's Legacy Block Limited. It's not actually that good in the sanctioned formats that it's legal in.

Type 2 is now Standard
Type 1.5 is now Legacy
Type 1 is now Vintage
It was banned in extended until it rotated out, and I believe it was Unbanned in legacy shortly after the Vintage/Legacy lists split

So I'm really hoping they reprint Goblin Chieftain and Goblin Grenade in M13 to help Krenko be playable in standard after rotation. I know I'll be throwing together a sweet Goblin deck for FNMs while M12 is still around though. I have a Kuldotha Rebirth variant of a Goblin deck, but I'd love to just make it straight Goblins.

But based on Krenko's flavor text, and the architecture behind him, it looks like he's based in Ravnica so maybe that points to some sweet Goblin shenanigans in RTR! haha

So today's "for a goof" deck:

Shockingly I've been winning with it. A lot.

I should really get back into Magic. Sadly, I am broke.

Cockatrice is a neat program that lets you build and play decks without costing a thing. I just downloaded it from cockatrice.de so I'm not super familiar with it but I was able to build my existing deck really quick and was just playing a game against my cousin when the server went down for an update.

As far as I can tell it's all manual so I'm not sure how you deal with certain cards. I have an Aquitect's Will that puts a flood counter on a target land, for example. It seems like I just have to remember the flood counter is there.

Still, it's a great way to deck build and analyze.

You can add a counter to the land card by right clicking. Otherwise, the 7 circles down the side of the battlefield can be used as counters as well.

Once you learn it, it's pretty awesome.

So Magic history is in the making.

GP Vancouver is coming up on the finals shortly, one of the players (from my town no less) is undefeated. Did no ID's or Draws, he's 17-0 which nobody has ever done in a professional magic tournament, if he wins the finals it's gonna be pretty crazy. Even more impressive given it's a limited tourney which means there so much left to chance. Did I mention that this is his second GP and only his 4th AR draft? Nuts.

Which one?

I have to say...I'm a huge fan of Champion of Lambholt in Avacyn Restored. I've done three times of AR and two times I've opened that card first pack and have been able to build around it. Last night I screwed up and actually passed Conjurer's Closet after having Champion in my stack. >.> Did do 20 damage on a single turn in two games though with Champion and stacking Joint Assault and Uncanny Speed, then putting Rush of Blood on top. Always fun to do that.

Yea Champion + Goldknight Commander + Thatcher Revolt is an instant kill, I have a constructed deck built around it.

I'm disappointed they've cut Building on a Budget. I guess I was in the minority of people who enjoyed it, but the forum troglodytes finally bitched it out of existence.

The article saying that Exalted is in Black and White makes me nervous that Noble Heierarch is not going to be in. They have been making a concerted effort (at least according to Aaron Forsythe's twitter) to make modern more affordable, and this is probably the only time in the next decade that you will be able to put this card back in standard. The hole in the MTGsalvation number crunch still has me hopeful, though

Oh great. All this anticipation and suspense just to reveal that M10 lands are still in. Not that I'm mad or anything; M10 lands are perfect and cheap. I was just hoping they were gonna reveal some new and interesting duals.

Oh well, now I can go drop my dollars on some M10 duals.

Yeah, this is disheartening. Hopefully they squeeze it in and don't just reprint it as a judge foil or something.

We're probably getting the Ravnica shocklands reprinted in the Ravnica sequel.

I have full playsets of the M10 duals, I was gonna snap if they didn't reprint them. There was no reason not to.

Cheating is real, folks.

And this guy did it on camera.

What was the cheat?

What was the cheat?

The right-hand player uses Vendillion Clique to send Batterskull to the bottom of his opponent's library. Then, about a minute later, the left-hand player cracks a fetchland, picks up his entire library except the Batterskull, which he leaves on the table and slips into his hand.

C'mon son. I know it's a big tournament but is winning so important that you have to cheat? Especially with the extra Stoneforge in your hand?

I'll never understand people who do that. I really won't.

To cheat on camera, especially after the Bertoncini incident, you'd think people would learn by now.

I'm really starting to wonder how prevalent this is at a PTQ level and above. I have to watch these videos 2 or 3 times to catch it, so what does that say of my ability to catch it during a game I'm actually playing?

I'm willing to bet people cheat all the time, at all levels of Magic. It's just harder to get away with it when you're recorded doing so. I don't tend to watch my opponents as closely as I maybe should because I'm thinking about my own moves. I can't imagine that I'm alone in that regard.
