During the Q&A session of the company's annual shareholder's briefing (transcribed here), Wada was asked the expected question about the much wanted remake. His response was something to the effect of, we'll make a Final Fantasy VII remake once we've made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of FFVII.

Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII. If they were to release a 7 remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with, he said.

FFVII is pretty much the pinnacle of JRPGs and none have even come close to matching its brilliance on all levels. love it or hate it, it's definitely the game any rpg developer would be proud of being a part of.

Yeah kind of a dumb thing to say. That said, I personally prefer VII over IX by a small margin mainly due to the characters.

You already have Square Enix, multiple times. (Many pre-FFVII entries are also far superior.)

FFVII is a great game, but the god-like reverence some people give it baffles me.

The world of FFVII was pretty interesting and it was a different time. It'll be a long time before any Japanese RPG ever get's that level of shoulder hoist again, no matter how good it is.

Even if we do see a remake, Midgar will be reduced to a purchase terminal on the overworld. It might have a pic of the old Midgar as a background in the menu though!

Looking back the only Final Fantasy title that tops FFVII is maybe Tactics, and 6 came before 7. Simple math really, but still in the end; that is a bullshit excuse to not remake the game.

That's probably the biggest reason why it hasn't happened yet. The original apparently cost over 40m to develop, so a remake at that scale would have a monstrous budget.
