Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

There won't be a FF title with the impact of FFVII but quality wise it's up to Noctis.

Replaying it right now so I'll have to disagree. So many epic moments...

I'd say the entire portion of Midgar and the Gold Saucer were the best parts of FFVII. The others were kinda meh. Even the last stage was boring and meh (fortunately the final boss was pretty cool).

Well it was one of the biggest games in the world.

I would also look at the doing better point as starting now or more recently. Doesn't matter if XII was someones favourite if XIII was squidoes best effort and terribly received.

The more I have thought about it the stranger a FFVII remake seems. The cinematography for lack of a better term doesn't even translate to FFVIII level of tech.

FFVII wasn't even that great...

I certainly think it had more memorable characters, events, locations, and especially music (I'm not a game music guy but I can still recall the majority of songs from that game 15 years later as if I just played it yesterday) than the ones that came after it. I'm not saying I hate the others, I really like 9, 10 and kind of like 12. 8 is a chore to play through because of that draw system though. They just didn't have the magic 7 did.

edit: Actually 10 comes close to me but I was not a huge fan of the linear world map and local traveling. It was FF13 in that regard before it was cool to hate on FF13 for those reasons.

I've never understood the love it gets. Maybe I'll replay it again if it ever gets remade.

Though it isn't a bad game, maybe I'm just bitter because that a lot of what I think has changed FF for the worst seems to be drawn from VII.

well if they're gonna keep making shit like xiii-2 and 3
might as well do viir and viiir and be done with the whole thing

What did Squaresoft do different in Final Fantasy VII that lead to the near loadless transitions between areas? That was lauded as one of their greatest achievements with the game technical wise, which probably helped games that came out in the future.

Did you play XIII-2 or are you just calling it shit because you played XIII and automatically judged the quality of its sequel?

7 had the magic..but it was also clearly not completely finished.
It begs for a remake and a final area, then it might be considered the best for me.

As for his comments? I agree and I thought they were well said.

What in the hell is he saying? MAKE GAMES PEOPLE WANT for fucks sake. It needs a remake so bad and people want it.

I love that they just admitted that they're just stringing FF fanboys/fangirls along. Dangle a FF7 "tech demo" trailer, release a bunch of "sidestories" in the FF7 universe...

His comments are a bit weird but I'm still glad. The current Square Enix isn't capable (or willing) to develop the FFVII remake people really want.

Personally I would prefer a straight remake.

-Retain 2D rendered backgrounds, albeit redone in HD with more detail. Think something like REmake on the Gamecube but in HD and without tank controls.

-Redo character models so they are the homogenous in FMV, cutscenes, battles

-Mix the OST up with a few orchestral versions of songs. Maybe throw in a few remixes here and there to keep it interesting.

-Retain the battle/materia system

-Retain most of the sidequests. I would probably get them to remake several of the Golden Saucer games though, snowboarding, roller coaster etc.

-Redone FMV (this is one thing Square are still good at)

I think the remake most people are looking for is that tech demo a few years ago but I think that would be Square biting off more than they can chew.

I don't understand what you're getting at. Most of the systems (Sphere grid, license board, jobs) don't have a use outside of battle.

I meant Emerald and Ruby Weapons the two optional bosses.

I waltzed right through the rest of the game just spamming limit breaks and not really bothering with materia.

I don't get why they are so resitant. It will sell fuck tons and take a bit less work than an entirely new game. Why not just do it? Though, at this point they need to wait for next gen, which we'll be halfway through if they start working on the game now any way.

i'm glad my favorite final fantasy--9--is the one nobody asks about, because that means it'll probably actually get a repolishing one day.

FFT comes close. IX lovers are hilarious though.
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IX said:
Fantasy IX is Hironobu Sakaguchi's favorite Final Fantasy title, saying that "it's closest to his ideal view of what Final Fantasy should be."

I definitely don't subscribe to the notion that FFVII wasn't a great game, but I feel like FFIX was better. Apparently so does the creator of the franchise.

no money, no time, no personnel.

and trolling, most likely

That would only please fans of the game, New games would laugh at how dated FF7 is.

VII is still my favorite game of the series. Only PS era Final Fantasy I've played through multiple times. So many awesome characters, moments and music in that game.

IX is my least favorite. I can't even remember what the game was about, any music from the game, and the names of any locations. Oh and the terrible character designs (besides Vivi)... ;)

FFX is awful IMO. 8 had some nice parts, 9 had better music, 12 and 13 had fun battle systems.

Parts of games after 7 have been better (a lot better) but I'd be lying if I said I felt any was better overall.

Delicious nostalgia.

No. Not that chibi trainwreck. XII

Wasn't that more of trainwreck than FFIX? I know the story fell flat or something after the middle.

I thought there was a specific thread for FFs vs FFs?

They've already made Final Fantasys better than VII, but they might be unable to make a more overrated game because of the environment of VII's release (look how traditional JRPGs are treated by the press today).

You cannot top Popeye-armed field models. They have a functional purpose! (The scene where Cloud & co. had to press the panels in unison).

If they were to make a Final Fantasy 7 HD remake, it would be like developing an entirely new Final Fantasy installment because they'd have to start from scratch, more-or-less. Having said that, I still believe they're going to get around to doing it. Or, you know, Wada could be lying out of his teeth and the remake has been in development for years already. Hey, Miyamoto lied about the 3DS XL.
