Hey I am a professional DJ. That means I actually get paid to work as one on a regular basis. I DJ Top 40 Dance about twice a week and Underground once or twice a month. I can tell you that at least in my community there are plenty of hobby DJs but not that many professional DJs out there. I am not one of those with some complex about DJing and how we are all special butterfly's making love to the CD/Record players. Rather I feel we bridge technical aptitude, music knowledge, and performance to entertain mostly drunk bar patrons.
It has been interesting watching the reaction to Paris's turn to Djing from my DJ friends (both hobbyists and professionals). Most of them are having meltdowns about it. My feeling is that it is a reaction more to their own insecurities about the craft rather than a direct response to Paris's abilities. In my community her ability to mix that music in the ear without computer aid would be applauded but her generic music selection and minor mistakes would be pointed out as flaws. Sure she has had an opportunity to debut on a big stage due to her "celebrity", but what she is doing up there isn't special or corrupt enough to warrant all the existential angst being projected from the DJ community.
