Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Hey- if you're out there, I was hoping I could compel Thanasis Deitus to post his gamepad configuration for all to see in here, as I know he modified his in some ways from my original and the Xpadder one Welltall's been using. It'd be great for people to see all the different methods you can use to play the game in this most enjoyable of ways.

Real pic July, bro? I'll miss the Hawk bird thinger.

Holy shit at the store prices:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/41380-black-lion-trading-post-items-rough-prices-in-euros/

Honestly, I didn't expect stuff to be THAT expensive. I planned to use the shop a lot, but now I'm pretty sure I won't :/

From the same thread:

Now counting in the bullshit 1$ =1Euro rule, and woo, I'm in it for roughly 210$. And that's just the relevant stuff, nothing of all the stuff I wanted to buy originally, like clothing, transmogrosnogaion stones and stuff. My Lotro lifetime sub was cheaper :(

Man. Oh, and before people start a "That's 15 $ per month, if you see it as a sub game" thing: Yeah, but in a sub game, I also get everthing else in the store for "free". Yes, I'm a bit annoyed right now, even if this probably was common knowledge up to this point, I didn't expect the pricing to be THAT harsh.
Also remember, the prices are per character, not per account.

And that's why you don't pay each month. There are a lot of weirdos who will spend a lot of money on that for you.

If you put in a lot of hours early on, effectively getting to level 80 before the fattest part of the bell curve reaches that level, you'll get a very decent exchange rate of in-game-gold to gems provided that gold drops much more plentifully at endgame than it does in midgame and early game (like every other MMO).

In effect, you'll be able to get gems 'on the cheap' with in game currency, provided that the exchange rate isn't completely out of whack for whatever reason.

Well, you can always buy gems with in game Gold, and we don't know the rates for that yet. For all we know stuff like bag/character slots could be not that hard to get. I think it is a reasonable expectation for not having to pay a fee.

Yeah, except the whole game is the 'end game', and don't be fooled into thinking your time is worth nothing. The in game store is overpriced, but Anet are cocky as hell and know they can get away with it. I just wish they had an option of paying monthly and having full access to everything.

That's the point. The more expensive the shop will be, the more expensive diamonds will be ingame. So I won't bet on easily available premium currency from the auction house, not at all.

But yes, we don't know that yet, but this isn't really off to a good start in my eyes. Again, don't forget us Non-Americans pay basically double the price for freaking everything.

Are you saying the rate that gold is dropped / effectively earned is the same at level 80 as it is at, say, level 30? Not being sarcastic, real question. If that's the case, then the gold-exchange-for-gems should equalize and be fair rather early on, but there will be no advantage for those who effectively rush to level 80 before most others.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the loot is better on higher level mobs, Arenanet confirmed that at some point when the whole level-scaling discussion came up, I think.

It'd be great for people to see all the different methods you can use to play the game in this most enjoyable of ways.

I'm not Thanasis, but this is gamepad config:

A = Dodge
X = Skill 1
Y = Skill 2
B = Skill 3
LT = Skill 4
RT = Skill 5
LB+A = Skill 6
LB+X = Skill 7
LB+Y = Skill 8
LB+B = Skill 9
RB = Mouse 2 (will probably change this up now that I have the AHK toggle)
R3 = F (Interact/pickup)
L3 = Jump
DPad U = Run
DPad D = Switch Weapons
DPad L = F1
DPad R = F7 Right mouse toggle (with AHK)
Back = Mouse 1
Start = Map

And that's it. I never had an elite skill in the beta so there was no need for a Skill 10 mapping. Obviously this will be modified to suit my needs in the full game, but it's a good start.

But yes, we don't know that yet, but this isn't really off to a good start in my eyes. Again, don't forget us Non-Americans pay basically double the price for freaking everything.

Because it's a world economy, the effectively-doubled gem/gold exchange rate for Europeans will mean that Americans will be affected too, since the exchange rate is dynamic like a stock ticker. It'll be twice as good for a European or Australian or Asian to utilize the Gold-for-Gems exchange than it will be for Americans, and that fact will negatively affect the Gold-for-Gems exchange rate (though it will benefit the Americans in Gems-for-Gold at the same time).

It'll really be best if the currency issues are worked out before launch, or it's just going to get too imbalanced for different countries and that imbalance will affect all of the exchange rates.

Thinking about buying a new monitor for the game. Anyone have any recommendations. Have a 21inch now was thinking bigger.

27" Apple Cinema display is amazing if you can swing it. Other 27's are good too, as long as they're 2560x1440, 1920x1080 looks bad on a 27".

If you're looking for a 24", make sure it's IPS, or at least LCD backlit. Asus monitors are good, and I've heard good things about the Dell's as well. Check Newegg.com for prices/selection etc..

I can't say any of the prices in the gem shop strike me as that expensive... then again I can't say I'm interested in buying any of it :P

Once again, just save up some gold and do some trading. The prices are a little steep so most will probably only pick up the permanent items.

Realm transfers seem pretty expensive, but for that kind of service I understand the elevated price. Bag tabs should be for all characters, not per character, and the way the bank is set up (with a tab for your crafting stuff) I believe the price is fair but I suppose everyone will need more room eventually, (until then you can use your alts as bank slots). I think $10 per char slot (when you have 5 to begin with) seems reasonable considering there is no fee, and the rest are boosts and cosmetics I have no interest in, so if those keep the game going, good for them.

I agree though, that the usual $=€ equivalency fucks up European players, but that sort of thing happens in every game (not that it is OK).

Realm transfers seem totally unjustified when you realize you can guest to any realm whenever. It's probably a 4-byte integer in your account file.

The real reason, I'm guessing, for the cost is they want players to take responsibility of their realm. If you're not bound to a realm, you don't care if the chasm connecting Kryta to Ascalon is blocked because you'll just hop realms. Then the whole world will fail because nobody takes ownership of the realm as a whole.

Has anyone tried out fast cast ground targeting? It would be nice if that was actually effective since I am not really a fan of ground targeting AoEs, and would be especially nice considering im planning on using a controller, but it doesnt sound all that effective

I really dont understand why they cant give you the option to center the AoE on your target, yourself, or one of your ally. Perhaps its impossible or hard code-wise, but it seems like it would be a lot more effective and convenient for the player

"Well, you can always buy gems with in game Gold, and we don't know the rates for that yet."

Unless anything's changing from BWEs, the rates fluctuate based on how often they're being exchanged for gold (think material/rune traders in GW1).

I would bet a good time to get Gems might be very early on if people decide to "Cash in" ASAP and get a lot of gold.

I tried it out and it took some getting used to.

Basically, you need a target reticle, in my opinion of course, that would make it a whole lot easier.

Trying to play a grenade kit engineer, while kiting mofo's, was fun even without the reticle.

Oh shit, looks like I'm being called out.

For the most part, my setup is a lot like yours, but I messed with the placement of the healing, utility, and elite skills, as well as the menu buttons. Anyway, here's my setup:

Left Stick: Move
Right Stick: Camera/Cursor
Left Stick click: Left Mouse click
Right stick click: Toggle camera cursor

X: Jump
Square, Triangle, Circle: Skills 1-3
L1: Skill 4
L2: Skill 5
R1+L1: Heal
R1+L2: Elite Skill
R1+Square, Triangle, Circle: Utilities 1-3
R2: Dodge
R1+X: Interact

D-pad Up+X, Square, Triangle, Circle: F1, F2, F3, F4
D-pad Down: Weapon Switch
R1+D-pad Down: Put away equipped weapon
D-pad Right: Tab target
D-pad Left: Previous Target (Shift+Tab)
D-pad Up+Up/Down on Right Stick: Zoom (mouse wheel)

Start: Hero panel (Stat/Equipment page)
Select: Inventory
R1+Start: Esc Menu
R1+Select: Map

Also, for some reason I had R1+D-pad Up bound to auto-run, but this doesn't really make any sense. I didn't really get much of a chance to test out this layout, so when I do a few things are bound to change. Also, there are probably still a few important functions that I haven't bound yet. I'm thinking R1+Left Stick click makes a whole lot more sense for auto-run though.

Anyway, here's the file:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/gnhtg8

It's made using a PS3 controller, emulating an Xbox 360 controller, so if you are using a 360 controller it should work with no extra setup.

Edit: I should mention, my setup expects that you have Dodge bound to the V key, and Put Away Weapon bound to the L key. Those should be the only key bindings that need to be adjusted in game.

I went the 27" IPS route for much MUCH cheaper than an overpriced Apple monitor by importing a panel from S.Korea and couldn't be happier. You take a risk because there's no warranty and ships international and could get damaged (some ebay sellers are better than others, do your research), but I felt it was worth it.

All the info you'll need to make a decision can be found in these threads (I personally have a Crossover 27q-LEDP):

http://www.overclock.net/t/1232496/crossover-27q-led-led-p-27m-led-2720mdp-gold-led-monitor-club
http://www.overclock.net/t/1215866/...g-90hz-achieva-shimian-qh270-and-catleap-q270

Again, do your research - I don't recommend diving into buying one of these all willy-nilly.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the loot is better on higher level mobs, Arenanet confirmed that at some point when the whole level-scaling discussion came up, I think.

Code:
MISINFORMATION ALERT

Loot drops based on your level from any mob. It scales just like everything else in this game. Everyone will be seeing the same drops usually. And it is still geared toward your level. More importantly, the gear caps out at a certain point - the same is based around skill and customizing your aesthetic, not progressively more awesomer loot.

Retrooooooooooooooooooooooo

What time is the secret secret?

Doesn't really need to be a secret; we're planning a final podcast, that's all.

To answer your question, 7 Eastern / 6 Central / 4 Pacific. Not starting on the dot, as we'll need to discuss some stuff first.

The most important thing to do during the next BWE is to take screenshots of your character creation sliders, so you can nab as many good names as possible as soon as the servers come online August 25th.

Yeah, I plan to actually play with the character creator in BWE3.

Very good idea, yes. I did this for one of my characters during the stress test, will probably do it with all of them during BWE3 (especially if Asura and Sylvari are in!).

I'm fairly certain that GW2 will work similar to GW1, in that once you reserve a name, you can delete it and it will remain yours for a set amount of time (something like 24 hours?). I'd like to get an official answer on that in the next BWE, so I'll probably ask it on the forums once they open.

Unless somebody has already seen an answer.

Anyways, the point is, grab the names you want ASAP, then worry about creating the character once you've got the names you want locked down.

They really should limit that to 1 (or at least just a few) name per account. I think its pretty crappy if you can reserve like 20 names

Oh alright, then I remembered wrong :( Sorry!

Retro and others! So sorry, a friend has a flat tire and I need to assist, won't be able to make the podcast. Sooo sorry, I was really looking forward to it :'(

Well, you only have 5 character slots...

Ash was hauled off too, and Kayos had an emergency. We're probably gonna wait a little bit (Well, closer to an hour) so if you can make it, hop on mumble or message me on steam and we'll let you know what's up.

Well, you only have 5 character slots...

Thats it? Man, i at least thought theyd give you enough slots to have a character for every profession

Well, i guess thats good for the name saving, since im not really a fan of things you can abuse, even if they are relatively minor

You can buy more character slots if you want, but if somebody wants to go and blow a shitload of money just to squat on names, they've earned it.

I'm more concerned about getting the names I want. Not to squat on them, but because I want to use them eventually. I plan to have a Guardian, Warrior, Engineer and either a Thief or Mesmer. And I have a lot of names I've always used that I want to be sure I can keep using.
