Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

aren't they holding beta names to those accounts for a few days of the headstart?

I don't believe Beta names are held, but they are saving names from GW1 if you have an active account (logged in in the last year, I think, could be 6 months). But since you can't have single-word names in GW1, that means all of them are up for grabs at launch.

It would suck if Beta names were reserved, especially since all the ones I want were taken.

Oh, i thought beta names were being reserved. If its Guild Wars 1 names, then i have no problem with it

Go for Eternal Zaishen by buying Zaishen keys? Rank 3 = you will go from 23 to 29.

Edit: Took another look - if you have access to War in Kryta, complete it and get an Oppressor Weapon for that last point.

Hmm.. true. I've heard a lot of people suggest War in Kryta. Does it take very long? Zaishen Keys are a tad expensive I think :-( Getting to rank 3 requires 200 keys. The going rate is 5.8k per key (there abouts) = 1.16 million gold. I might have to finish up the Cantha campaign for a 5 statue display and go from there.

Edit: Having said that, I am in the possession of 2x 7th year birthday presents. It might doable.

So I've got 3 points in the HoM (lol, I've got the GW GOTY Edition, missing Eye of the North), would it be possible to get to say 15 or 16 points by GW2's launch?

I'm at 37/50 at the HoM and I stopped there. I could grind out more but the titles aren't that important to me - I would rather earn and wear a title that I earn for myself in Guild Wars 2.

Since my top HoM title is "Ghostly Hero," I will try and squat the name "Casper" just to try and be clever.

The day before my birthday. Yay!

Yep, you just need to get EOTN. 15 or 16 can be obtained from just completing all the campaigns along with a few minor things along the way. Read this:

Is HoM account wide? Only asking because I've got 5 points on my warrior. Didn't realize that Ritualist was the best/easiest way to go, so I started a Rit. I just finished Factions with my Rit yesterday, but my HoM points still remain at 5.

I'm attempting to run through EotN now. Just finished getting the three Asura for Project G.O.L.E.M. No tapestries yet on the Rit. Maybe I get the HoM point when the tapestries are unlocked on the Rit?

Not 100% sure on this, so maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong:

Most of the stuff is account bound, and at least if you get a statue into HoM it is basically connected to your account and available to all characters. What this means is that if you start doing protector titles for example, you have to do them all on one character.

If you have added stuff to your HoM with an another character and start a new one, you have to put in at least 1 tapestry to be able to see anything in there with your new character.

Yeah HoM is account wide. Also, you have to log all the way out of the game for the points to register.

Strange. I stopped playing last night around 9 pm. Turned on PC this morning and just checked HoM. Still sitting at 5 points. Crap.

I'm also glad we wrapped up the podcast series, it was a great run guys!

Well, that was the last of the pre-launch podcasts. If people like them, we can still do them after launch. There wouldn't be much 'news' to talk about, but we can always come up with something and do it on a monthly basis or somehting.

Also, that was probably the shortest one we've ever done. I guess having a list of subjects to cover before we begin really helps.

That's because when you complete a story line, or get an upgraded hero or weapon, you have to dedicate it to your HoM tapestry.

For instance, if you completed Factions, and have the respective tapestry that shows the story statues, after a couple of dialog boxes you'll have an option to put a statue commemorating this acheivement.

I feel like this is a lousy explaination

You don't actually need a tapestry for Honor.

But yes, go to the Hall of Monument (adjacent to Eye of the North) and click on "Honor." Envision "Protector of Cantha" to dedicate Canthan normal-mode campaign.

Pre-purchased GW2 last month some time. I jumped into one Beta weekend, but it really didn't work on my old laptop. Just bought a new one though, which it will hopefully run fine on.
What's the general consensus regarding this game? Is it looking awesome, both graphically and gameplay-wise? I bought it mainly because I'd played a little of GW, liked that it was non-subscription and the general mechanics of the thing.

Awesome, but bear in mind that you're asking the people in the Guild Wars 2 thread what their opinion on Guild Wars 2 is, so I don't know how you can expect anything but positive bias.

That said, feedback is overwhelmingly positive amongst gaming sites (for whatever "Gaming Journalism" is worth) and pretty much everyone who gives it a fair shake ends up walking away impressed and eager to play.

Graphically it's fantastic, not as technically impressive as something like TERA, but it more than makes up for it with an amazing art style. Less polygons, but the ones they have are put to good use. It's definitely a great looking game and there's quite a few screenshots in this page if you want to oogle them.

Gameplay-wise, it's leaps and bounds ahead of your standard MMO. It's very action-oriented and requires you to stay on your toes at all times. No rotations, no spamming auto-attack, no standing around soaking up damage, etc. You can read Jira's awesome mega-FAQ if you need more details.

Suffice it to say, around these parts, we're pretty pumped. The only people who really seem to take issue with GW2 are those who are biased against it (MMO Loyalists) or, surprisingly, huge GW1 fans (the game is just too radically different from the first).

Where can I listen to this podcast you guys have been doing, Retro, Hawkian, et al.?

We recorded it last night, Grizz is likely editing it and getting it hosted sometime today. Gonna try to get it up on Youtube this time too.

.

Thanks for all of the info :) The only other MMO I've really played is WOW, and I'm certainly pleased to hear GW2 isn't all about standard rotations and the like. I probably wont get the most out of the graphics, playing it on a laptop, but as long as it's designed well, I'll be happy anyway.

(for whatever "Gaming Journalism" is worth)
I came in here 'cause GAF always seems to be extremely brutal about anything that's really not worth playing, so if most of you guys like it, that boosts my expectations somewhat. I've already bought it anyway, so I was mainly after confirmation that I hadn't wasted my money.
Once again, thanks for the info, Retro.

Without starting a WoW vs. GW2 debate, if you were getting tired of the look and feel of Warcraft you'll definitely be pleased with the way GW2 looks and plays. Even on a laptop; ArenaNet is pretty damn good at getting their games looking great on low end software. They've even stated that they've been buying old video cards off eBay (because they're so old you can't find them anymore) for internal testing. If your laptop is relatively new you should be able to enjoy the visuals just fine.

Meh, GAF swings both ways. I've seen them worship and adore games that otherwise wouldn't get the time of day if they were from a different publisher, or on a different platform. There's just as much bias here as there is anywhere else.

But as far as wasting money goes, a one-time $60 purchase beats $15 a month any day. Even if you poke at it for a few months you've probably gotten your money's worth out of it.

Aaaah just getting caught up here. Sorry again I couldn't make the podcast guys, I was psyched :(

No worries, you had something come up that was more important. So did Kayos.

I would like to note, however, that MaxRPG showed up during a Tornado. Now there's a guy who has his priorities straight.

Jesus. Can't believe I didn't do this. Just did it, and all is well. Thanks.

Aye, a change will certainly be nice. The laptops pretty much brand new, though I'm not sure when the model was released. I cant imagine having too many problems playing it, thankfully.

That's a good point. I'd hate to think how much more I've spent on subs for WoW. The lack of pressure to play to get my moneys worth out of it each month will probably enrich my experience too.

Exactly. There's no subscription fee, so there's no incentive for them to build the game in such a way as to keep you plugged in and paying. Just had a nice blog post about it here; http://www.arena.net/blog/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success

I personally like to just log in for a few hours a day, and rarely do these massive, epic marathon play sessions*. Knowing that I'm not paying for time I'm not using makes it much easier to do exactly that.

* I know damn well I'll be in there 24/7 at launch.

That was a good read, thanks. I, too, will probably be playing it 24/7 at the beginning (Yay, early access!).

In GW1, if you solo, are there more drops? It feels like it is like that.

There are more drops for more players in the team. The drops are divided "evenly" between all players, including heroes and henchmen. Drops assigned to heroes and henchmen don't appear on the ground.

If you solo without heroes or henchmen, you'll get the most drops for yourself. If you go in a party with 8 humans, you'll get the most drops overall. Everything in between depends on party-size and number of heroes/henchmen, and it's actually kind of iffy math.

Yeah, I found the last BWE and the stress tests to be more... well, stressful than anything. I'm ready to play, but nothing I can do will actually last past Beta. And I feel inclined to play a lot because it's such a limited amount of time before we're cut off again.

Once it's for real though? Yeah, I'll be in there quite a bit. I've missed having that MMO itch scratched since I gave up WoW years ago.

Maxrpg Maxrpg Maxrpg Maxrpg Maxrpg.

No capitals except the M, please.
Well excuse me, princess.

I'm going to probably take a couple days off when it comes out. The days before launch, essentially.\

Listening to our last podcast, a lot of people in the podcast got the BWE scheduling and prognosticating crazily right.

Oh yeah? Where is it in the video, I forget when we started discussing that...

Or, you could just post who guessed what...

Or I could do it, but that's too much work...
