On one hand its nice to see that there won't be stupid overpowered cycles like the titans in M13. But on the other hand I really don't want to draft this set at all. The few cards I want out of this set I will just be trading for.

This really reminds me of like 9th or 10th edition. But you had lightning bolt in 10th so yeah.

I mean seriously. Craterize? That's a dick slap in the face, demolish wasn't even that good and now you make it worse?

My Frites deck. :(
Not even the worst card for you in the set, lol.

I really hope that I can catch someone trying to use Arbor Elf to pay for Mana Leak just once before M12 rotates.
Depending on when you use it, you can pay the mana. They play mana leak, and stack arbor elf on top of it, and tap a land for mana. Then elf resolves and you uptap the land, then mana leak happens.

I really think Thragtusk is gonna see some play. His cost isn't unreasonable, he's in green so he'll likely come down earlier than his cmc implies, and he's a great value.

And with all the little flying tokens, the spider reprint might see a fair bit of sideboard time.

**Got my head thinking in the green, right now. heh

But honestly, I just kind of want to throw the red 2 drop ring on Spikeshot elder and pick people off all day long. Haha.

I'm considering a Thragtusk/Resto Angel build for the SSG Open in late July. My only worry is that I won't have as much time to playtest as I would like. I just feel like he's a super difficult card to deal with for most decks and the format won't have adjusted to his presence by that point.

So based on the full spoiler, it looks like these are the things I want:

  • New Ajani
  • Crusader of Odric
  • Odric, Master Tactician
  • Void Stalker (I'm not convinced he's the nuts-balls, but he deserves exploration)
  • Magmaquake
  • Thundermaw Hellkite
  • Rancor
  • Thragtusk
  • Door to Nothingness (I will make this work)

Obviously I'll need a set of the various common/uncommon bits to stuff into other decks, but these are the only cards that I'm really interested in exploring.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I need me some Stuffy Doll.

I appreciate Wizards making a set that is so average across the board that I am in no was inclined to buy boxes.
I sincerely mean that considering that RtR will probably be crazy.

I want to kinda rework the curse deck we discussed months ago to be a more straight up red/black control deck. Maybe even mono black. Not sure yet.

I think a lot of people will be thinking that. If any of the mythics from this set get broken, they're going to get stupid expensive.

EDIT: Also, use spell check Wizards:

I thought the demon's name was Wit ;P

Or perhaps that teeny tiny mage there. Poor Wit.

Yeah, this core set seems slow and a bit wacky, which I'm fine with.

Just looking at the set spoiler I can see how White/Blue will be steamrolling drafts. Black is behind by a wide margin but if you manage to crack open a few of the black bombs it might work, paired with blue.

Red as usual I see cherry picking the removal as most of the DD is single R in the cost and green well... green is for big and dumb but its too slow to catch up to crazy ass 2/1 flyers for W and the rest of the airforce. I mean seriously, pair up that hawk with the uncommon knight of glory. Turn one hawk, turn two knight, if you're playing against black, he might as well scoop right there. You're bashing his ass with a 3/2 flyer on turn 2 while the knight can sit back and play defense all day long.

The only reach creatures for green are Deadly Recluse, Sentinel Spider, and Silkslash. Obviously Silkslash is a bomb but its a Rare. Deadly recluse is piss poor and will be good for exactly one Drake token block and that's it. Sentinel spider is a start, but its 5 cmc. You'll be at deaths door before casting it and a swarm of flyers will be kicking your ass. Plummet helps, but its not enough.

White and blue as usual have a ton of flyers that are very well costed and will be kicking butt. Throw in a little Exaulted and its just silly. Not to mention white has Ob ring AND pacifism, I don't think white is going to worry about some spiders. That's not even counting the crappy other removal white has.

But look at the bombs white and blue have compared to all the other colors, its no contest. It's really going to be 8th and 9th all over again in terms of drafting. Don't kid yourself, unless you open a Silkslash Spider or Neferox force White/Blue as hard as you can if you plan on drafting this set. They got the best creatures, best removal and best card drawing. Red is only good for splashing direct damage, black has overcosted exaulted creatures that don't synergize with exaulted except for the 1 mana 0/2 (which I really wouldn't run unless at gun point) and tries yet again to force this "swamps" matter BS that doesn't cut it if all you got for removal is Murder and Mutilate if you are lucky. I mean was printing Corrupt or Consume spirit really that bad? Would it have made black overpowered? I really can't see how Monoblack can win at all. I don't know who except for white to pair black with. But at least it has removal of some sort. Green gets Prey Upon which is its saving grace.

I could POSSIBLY see green/blue work. But it's going to get trumped by white/blue all day long. But again, don't kid yourself, force White/Blue unless you get some ridiculous bomb first pick.

One thing I will say, if I rip a Sands of Delirium I'm going to first pick and play the hell out of that card. That card is bonkers in limited and will end games fast. Mill might actually get there in a core set.

Actually there is one green deck I would force the mother loving spoonful out of now that I think of. One of the drafts I'm going first pick and continue to pick nothing but Timberpack wolves. With 3 packs I could probably grab 5 or maybe even six of those things. I mean it's just a bear which is already awesome, but in multiples? Holy shit.

Also, because I love flicker and bounce effects I'm very glad that Ravenous rats is back. Nephallia Smuggler is my favorite card right now in AVR and just the thought of softlocking people on their drawstep makes my balls tingle. If only chittering rats were back.

Whelp, time to go build that deck in modern now :D

I may buy Yeva, but this set has broken my desire to buy packs/boxes altogether.

Yeah I will definitely grab a set of her, and pretty much everything else but it is not something that I have to have noooow.
I count maybe 10 cards that will not be 50cent rares , 1 dollar at best which is good in the long run for playability.

But alot of green utilities that I am putting in the weapon case, and have some interesting ideas for black green, white green or blue black.

Ya know, if it is between "underpowered core set" and "Titans ruining everything" I think I might be okay with how this turned out.

Yeah, but hopefully they don't go too silly with under powering things. I mean, I'm cool because I get to save some cash this time around. No complaints from me! I'm sure I'll be buying RtR en masse.

Don't you guys see? The spell is eroding everyone's mind, including ours, those of the readers.

Such is Bolas' neuronecromantic magic.

I'm actually glad the core set isn't broken as fuck. I know Ravnica will be crazy awesome and I agree with WanderingWind. I will be buying that more than M13. I might drop a box of M13 and then just buy singles.

I'm not sure I'll buy even a box of this set yet. There isn't much I want at all. I'd love an Ajani, but I'm not going to go apeshit trying to get one. I love me a Thragtusk, but I'll just buy a playset loose.

RtR is probably going to be the set to buy, true, but maybe M13 will have beaten the 3 box habit out of me by then.

I do hope the block one of these years is Bolas' master plan going off and ruining everything for everyone.

It has to be now. He's the focus of M13 for a reason, I'd imagine.

I thought Bolas actually did not want the Phyrexians to come into power? Wasn't that why he sent Tezzeret to Mirrodin in the first place? To destroy Karn, and thus hopefully removing their direction and leadership? Now the Phyrexian Praetors all kinda don't work together (not that they liked eachother before, but when Karn was still around they had to follow the Father of Machines).

And shit, I really want to see Niv Mizzet face off against Bolas. Really really really really really badly.

Smartest being in existence versus the most powerful (known) being in existence, both of them dragons? Yeah, I want to see that.

Red players shouldn't feel too bad. They got what is probably the best mythic in the set.
