Last page made me think we were getting the culture festival + reaction next chapter, but I'm probably reading too much into it.
Okay well it's in denouement I guess, but that's still better than it was before!

Endou-kun no Kansatsu Nikki (1-4 end)
tumblr_m6k29kPJOw1qbxqfpo1_500.png

The sketchy art style, to me, worked well for this series. I think Im always a fan of these school stories and this one was just really simple but grew on me, especially at the tense climax chapter. Actually liked Endou better after the haircut over before though, both are just good. Was surprised Tsuda was interested in him. Enjoyable.

Claymore 128:

It was nice seeing more "familiar" faces this chapter, as well as more awakened beings from the "past" era, but I'm not looking forward to another giant monster battle so soon after the previous one ended, regardless of the two monsters involved.

... You know, saying "I still love you, but we should pretend we don't even know eachother anymore and I'm happy for you and your other girlfriend" to this kind of guy is ... not exactly the best plan... if you're trying to stay apart for good... it is a good plan to keep this series spinning in circles indefinitely, though!

Kimi-iro Focus 35-36

Woah, actual relationship development between Ooji and Sumire? AMazing, I wasn't expecting it... so how will it be revoked and zeroed out? Oh, sure, it's possible it won't be... but given the genre (harem), I don't think I'd bet on it. Of course it is true that as the childhood friend and main girl Sumire has an advantage, but still... it'll be interesting to see if this actually leads to lasting progress between them!

Oh, and yes, as always, about half of these two chapters was centered around a plot that existed mainly for fanservice reasons. But in this series, you don't expect anything else. But the characters are decently good, the writing okay, and Ooji isn't entirely a standard harem protagonist, so overall I moderately like the series despite the sometimes ridiculous levels of fanservice.

Anamorphosis no Meijuu vol 1 END

Oh man, this was amazing. The entire setup, the mystery, the tension, brilliant. I'm still not quite sure how the plot twist actually works but I would have never guessed it.

As for the other short stories that followed the main one, well.. fuck. Some of that shit was so disturbing, hilarious, and disgusting all at the same time

I also really like the cover even though I don't think this particular person was featured in the manga

How is Magi? Thinking bout picking it up

It's pretty great. It has the feel of the large and expansive world that something like One Piece has, while the narrative arcs and character dynamics are closer to something like Fullmetal Alchemist where it feels like a smaller set of individuals on personal missions to change the world. Action, adventure, magic, and cool villains.

Kaikisen - Return to the Sea vol 1 END

This is soo good. It's one of those city people vs countryside people mixed in with fantasy elements. I loved the mermaid's legend and how they kept the mystery around her until the end of the manga and the reveal was pretty damn solid. I was also impressed by how detailed the backgrounds were in the manga, really helps to make it more alive.

There was also another short story at the end of the volume which was a nice read but I don't know if it was somehow connected to the main story or not. I think it takes place in the same town?

See? I never let people down. I'm not a terrible person like those other people peddling smut and subjecting themselves to terrible manga just to post about how horrified they are by the badness! :D

If you like that, I would recommend other Shintaro Kago stuff. He does a lot of oneshots that are just batshit insane, but they're so damn methodical, that you can't really call the guy crazy (like Umezu); just really friggin creative. Read Abstraction; if that doesn't blow your mind, you may be too far gone.

Now a lot of his stuff is technically classified as guro, but it's more for the mindfuckery rather than arousal or anything. He's gone on record to say it's not the kind of stuff that interests him sexually.

Guilty Crown 3

What a nice surprise I thought it was dropped. This was extremely faithful to the anime, they even kept Tsugumi's booty bounce scene, Ayase's bewbie bounce scene, Shu's starring at Inori's panty scene, and my favorite, Darly's awesome entry and his appearance and anger at the flower scene.

That cliffhanger moment though, my second favorite void after Shuu's in manga form will definitely be great.

Magi - Volume 9 (ch79-88)

If more "training arcs" were like this, I don't think anyone would complain about them at all. It's really nice to see the author spend an entire volume on quieter things while expanding on stuff the audience might already be curious about. What's Sinbad's kingdom like? Who are his generals? How do the people in his kingdom live? At the same time, the main characters train under stronger and more experienced characters, while also learning more about the nature of their abilities and the rules of the world. Pretty cool stuff.

The new characters are also pretty interesting, telling us a bit more about the complexities of the Kou Empire without revealing too much. There's certainly a lot of mystery there, and we probably won't be learning more for quite a while. The pacing of the story is pretty solid, especially how events lead into each other. I was just wondering about whether they would drag on the training sequences since they still haven't mastered their newer skills, and suddenly bam, Sinbad decides that the best way to improve at this point is to throw them into a Dungeon for some real practice. What an awesome idea.

Why can't more shounen manga be like this? :(

The new dungeon is cool.

This is good

Ok reading Paraxis and Abstraction next.

I'm kinda glad his work isn't centered around guro.

depends on the work, really... kago isn't leery of doing some old fashioned shock and awe with lots of cum and blood when he wants to.

That said both Parastaxis and Abstraction belong more to the high-concept stuff that makes him so good. The latter, in particular, is amazing on a visual level. It plays around with perspectives in a very dissective manner.

GE (caught up)

Ultimately, there wasn't much rage. But the way current events are building up, there's going to be a rage explosion soon when the main girl blurts out her true feelings. I can feel it.

If you're doing play rape then you don't stop unless she says her safeword you both made up

There was no safeword. There was only "I'm going to cry and scream and fight it, but I want you to keep going until you finish". It's the single dumbest moment in either rage manga.

Assassination Classroom

Oh man that's such a good concept. I love this. All his different color faces and all, I swear.

And the art got tons better from Neuro. His blackface was the best face.

I love this too:

Magi - Volume 10 (ch89-98)

I've been talking to cosmic lately about how I feel Magi is much closer to FMA rather than One Piece, but this volume here definitely feels like a One Piece story arc. It's probably fair to say that overall the world and story narrative in Magi are very similar to how FMA handled stuff, and the characters are too, but the Dungeons in Magi definitely feel like One Piece islands in terms of how different/random/unique they are from everything else in the world. Plus, since they're one-off adventures, they'll never be visited twice. If there is more focus on Dungeon exploring, Magi would probably feel more like One Piece, but since there isn't, I think my point stands!

Anyway, that was a pretty interesting volume. The Dungeon here is pretty.... unexpected in terms of where it goes, and shit started to get kinda real at the end. The stuff introduced before the Dungeon proper seems like it might be pretty important to the larger scheme of things later on in the story too. A scattered civilization with an ancient language which existed in the first dungeon? Ominous...

I might put off reading the rest so I don't run out of Magi today. :/

Sankarea 30

His virginity?

Sensei No Bulge 7
Some girl appears at the end with a bazooka and a whale, whatever.
I remember the girl (and I think the whale too) from the one-shot color page, so I assume they're from the one-shot.

I'm assuming Alibaba will hit the level cap at some point like Sinbad. I think there will be a skip on some of the dungeons, going straight to the them having a new Djinn.

I wonder if they'll be a bigger focus on dungeons going forward. I'd be cool with the typical political stuff too, but I feel like Ohtaka just forgot about the dungeon stuff and is now trying to bring it back into the spotlight for a bit.

Sankarea 30

These recent chapters are such teases :/

I think zagan's dungeon stuff is there mainly to develop the Kou prince.

and as upandaway mentioned they'll hit a level cap, so I don't expect more than one or two in the next few years.

The level cap was mentioned by Sinbad before they left. But later when they enter the dungeon itself Amon suggests to Alibaba that the level cap is a pre-set thing. It depends on the individual and it's implied that Alibaba's cap is much lower than Sinbad's. The way dungeons work in the world of Magi, it doesn't make sense for them to keep exploring them right now anyway. They serve a specific function, and they're not just there for fun and games. As long as the function of dungeons remain that of being a test for kings, I don't see Aladdin and Alibaba needing to go into many of them.

What could significantly change though, is if there is another game changer in the story. If the "true" nature of the dungeons are eventually revealed, maybe there can be a reason for them to actively go after all the remaining dungeons in the world to seal and recover the Djinns one by one. Unless that happens I don't see dungeons ever being a focus of the main storyline.

Ah well, guess I'll just enjoy the occasional dungeon. The rest of the series is still awesome.

Sprite

Bah, enough with the jumping around! I hate when any kind of story does that. Makes it very hard to follow.

It's pretty rare that a single panel can sell me on a series this easily. Shame there's only a handful of short chapters translated.

Yeah it's pretty great so far. It's simple yet charming as well, kinda like Yotsuba or Nichijou.

Hoping more gets translated soon.

It's funny you mention Nichijou, since I was actually thinking that you could replace the girl and the guy with Yuuko and Mai and it would feel completely natural.

Assuming there's no reveal soon regarding the nature of dungeons, I can still see them heading into at least one more, if the story takes a turn towards Kou.
