Man how the fuck can you dub a training scene with Coldplay? It just felt odd as hell to me. I'm conflicted about this movie. I don't think it's awful but I don't think it's great either. And yet Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were so good.

I actually want a good sequel here with these leads but Sony fucked up big time hiring Orci/Kurtzman. I hope a script rewrite happens. One thing this film made me realize was how much I love Spiderman in film. Batman's my favorite comic book character but when it comes to movies Spiderman is just more fun to watch for me. I give a majority of the credit to Raimi for that one.

I'll re-ask my question about IMAX on the new page. Does it add a lot to the action scenes? Are the action scenes done well to begin with?

Pretty good movie. Garfield is great (but I knew he would be.) The webswinging was, well, Amazing. Even the first person stuff, surprisingly. Well told story.

Who was that guy at the end?

Didn't feel the music for this. It felt totally out of place most of the time, and I didn't like the main "theme" that played whenever they showed or mentioned Peter's father.

Lizard looked absurd, and not in a good way. Even the lack of snout could have been OK, but what was with the perma-grin? Were they ripping off the Joker or something?

Are they leaving the "guy with the star tattoo" plotline until the next movie? It seems like they just forgot about it here.

Guy at the end
Norman Osborn

I figured but I had no idea how he got in and out of there. Thought he might have been a pre-costume Mysterio or something.

Truly a speculator movie! Andrew Garfield did a perfect job of playing Peter Parker and Spiderman. Emma Stone was great in her role, and I really love her as a blonde. Aunt May was great. It felt like a real Spiderman film, and I cannot wait for more. I read a lot of negative or iffy comments about the movie before and after watching it I don't know how people didnt like it! The cinematography was also great. Really great reboot and in my opinion much better than Raimi's movies. The characters were better cast in this movie, barely any cheese and overall just a better feel. Dont get me wrong, I love Raimi(Evil Dead is the shit!). Toby, Kirsten were just not right for the roles in the old movies. I hope the actor for J Jonah Jameson comes back to do his role because he was perfect from the other movies. It could be like how they handled M in 007...

Telling Gwen he was Spider-Man. I was hoping only Captain Stacy would find out at the end and tell him to watch out for Gwen, but even that didn't play out like I had hoped. I understand why they did it, so I'm not really angry about it.

I caught myself thinking the same thing. It would have elevated Captain Stacy's revelation, and would have created a brief but incredibly strong bond between them. But similarly, the Peter and Gwen relationship wouldn't have been as great as it was if he didn't tell her. It was unconventional given how the maiden almost always finds out the secret in the sequel.

Uncle Ben's killer should've robbed that store at gunpoint. I kept waiting for the dude to pull the gun out after Peter left and at one point thought the guy was going to just bump Ben and knock him into oncoming traffic or something. Again, minor nit pick.

Agreed. The dude had already dropped whatever he had tried to steal, and just had to run. There was absolutely zero reason to make him gun Ben, and he didn't even fit the profile of some crazy trigger happy fool.

Crane scene coincidence was a little meh, but again, whatever. It provided some cool visuals.
Crane scene was cringe worthy, but fun. It's something that would have fit a lot better in a Raimi film.

So what's the concensus on Pete's final line in class? Creepy or super creepy? It just felt so weird when he said it. But at the same time Gwen's end smile was killer. Hell any time Emma Stone smiles is killer.

Orci and Kurtzman are rewriting action scenes in the (already done) Vanderbilt screenplay, nothing more.

I thought it was
Connors talking to himself.

Orci and Kurtzman are rewriting action scenes in the (already done) Vanderbilt screenplay, nothing more.

This is a good thing. I just hope for the sake of the sequel, the Vanderbilt script doesn't rotate between so few set pieces as the middle act of this movie did. It felt like we were constantly going back and forth between Oscorp, Pete's house and Gwen's house. Regardless, if Webb gets a strong villain with great motivations, I'm positive he can knock it out of the fucking park.

I dream of one day watching a spiderman movie that doesn't feature a giant American flag in the 3rd act. Oh well, minor quibble really.

I think this may be the best Spiderman movie yet, but I also don't think that's saying much. Overall I thought the movie was decent, but not great.

I have to admit that I cannot wait to see this film as I can't remember a film that's had such a polarising effect in a thread. I seem to remember Tron Legacy splitting people (and I did NOT like that film) in a similar manner.

It's ironic that it's the opinion of various people in this thread that have me hyped for this film in a way that Sony's marketing never did.

Orci and Kurtzman are rewriting action scenes in the (already done) Vanderbilt screenplay, nothing more.

This has never been confirmed AFAIK. And since they haven't (officially anyway) set a director for the sequel it seems a little early to be tinkering with such 'light' script rewrites.

If they are setting Kurtzman/Orci to do any rewrite work on the script this early it's likely a page one rewrite starting again from scratch with Webb being replaced which was the industry gossip before the film was released.

To be fair to Vanderbilt who did write the original script/story the script was apparently heavily rewritten by Alvin Sargent (who has worked on the scripts for all of Sony's Spider-Man films) and Harry Potter scribe Steve Kloves.

Came back from watching it earlier and now I'm really curious about the things that got cut out. The doorman scene that got cut from one of the earlier promotional things was something I remembered but I also remember there being more to the origin that got rumored around not ending up in the final cut.

Also did anyone get the feeling a crap ton of scenes were cut from the final movie? I remember there being a Peter/doorman scene that was previewed a while ago that never made it in.

Edit- Lol Jangaroo beat me to it.

Also did anyone get the new TDKR trailer with this movie? My IMAX 3D showing only had trailer #3 (which I would admittedly pay to see for two hours straight in IMAX, but still.)

Yeah, I caught the new TDKR trailer at my theater during the ASM showing. Was a nice surprise.

Edit: We were like right on the dot.

Don't know if you'll have a similar experience, but the people in my theatre absolutely loved it. Lots of laughs and cheering and 'awwws' for poor Pete. And I've heard crwods have reacted like that at other theatres. If nothing else, it's a fun experience. Rarely, if ever, is the crowd emotionally involved with a super hero, and I think this film caught a lot of viewers off guard. Garfield and Stone are just that damn likeable.

Yep my theater clapped at the end

Well this could go either way judging by the reactions in this thread. They either really liked it... or were overcome with joy that it was over.

Think I'm just going to wait till it comes out on DVD, reactions seem extremely polarized, and I already have my doubts. Will hope for the best when it rolls around.

Was it the Nokia trailer or the MTV footage or something entirely new? I take it that it used the music from those two, in any case.

Um nope ... My theater enjoyed it a lot and the movie is definitely worth seeing in theaters

That last line was pretty weird though. Kind of gave a "maybe we'll just say 'screw Gwen's dad and his promise' and start dating again anyways, even though I gave my word to a now dead man."

It's like, if you're gonna do that, why break up in the first place?

Yeah, Sony marketing fail. They haven't had a good marketing campaign since SM3 which that really burned them because the movie was dogshit and almost destroyed the franchise. That ASM is looking like such a success just five years after that atrocity should say enough about how good it is.

The partial rewrite may not be confirmed today, but by the end of ASM's theatrical run Sony will want to ensure that they hold onto Webb which means kicking Orci/Kurtzman to the kerb. A sequel written by Vanderbilt with Orci/Kurtzman set-pieces directed by Webb would be about as good as it gets for ASM2. I take you haven't seen it yet, but there are so many things in ASM that Webb does well and so many avenues that he needs to explore in ASM2/3 with Garfield and Stone. Not only that but I think that Sony will change the story in ASM2
Green Goblin, a bridge, Gwen
so that Gwen is around for the whole trilogy.

So I think I noticed something that may have been lost in the rewrites for this movie. Peter (in a somewhat poorly explained way) gets his webbing pellets straight from Oscorp (how he gets his hands on them, no one knows, nor does anyone care or notice that Spider-man is using Oscorp tech), but then tells the car jack guy that he invented the webbing formula himself. In what was presented to the audience, the movie only showed Peter inventing the actual web shooter device and not the webbing itself.

Oops?

Ignoring the comic storyline, thematically, things do not bode well for Gwen Stacy. Also, Aunt May foreshadowing (secrets aren't free).

The last couple of exchanges between Gwen and Peter were clearly not written by the same person who scripted the other parts of their relationship.

Gwen clarifying for the audience that Peter was in fact avoiding her because of Captain Stacy's promise was a bit ridiculous.

Now I understand why he would break the promise - he's a teenager, and a very confused one at that. Yet you expect more from Peter Parker. You don't expect him to succumb to it, and if he does, it shouldn't be in the hint hint wink wink way that the movie ends with. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 deal with this crushing responsibility quite well. Pete grapples with his powers and tries to manage his life to include MJ. It's a struggle he's committed to balancing.

Peter Maguire's final monologue in Raimi's Spider-Man would have been perfectly apt here.

Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spiderman.

Ignoring the comic storyline, thematically, things do not bode well for Gwen Stacy. Also, Aunt May foreshadowing (secrets aren't free).

Well I get they have to get them back together in the sequel so she can, um, do her thing, but it was pretty clunky the way they teased it. This movie really did not handle the tonal shifts that well.

Salvor put it pretty well, the original Spider-man had a closing monologue that would have been great here.

Dang, now I'm hearing the music in my head as he said it.

Well this could go either way judging by the reactions in this thread. They either really liked it... or were overcome with joy that it was over..

What kind of failed logic is this? Who'd stay around to watch a film that they hate so they can sarcastically clap at the end of it? And what are the odds for an entire audience in a theatre to do the same?

why all the Tobey hate? I feel spidey 3 has madepeople retroactively dislike him in the others cause I remember his performance being pretty well liked when the first one came out and spidey 2 was, well spidey 2, what can you reallycomplain about in that movie?

No hate, he was just a loser and Spidey is not a loser. Peter Parker is a great many things, but a loser is not one of them.

Amazing Spider-Man’ Shatters Tuesday Opening Box Office Record With $35M

TUESDAY 11 PM, 3RD UPDATE: More fireworks at the North American box office on the eve of U.S. Independence Day. My sources say Sony Pictures’ superhero reboot The Amazing Spider-Man opened with $35M (though some rival studios put the number in the neighborhood of $32M tonight). It easily sets a new domestic record for a Tuesday opening – helped by its 3D premium pricing – and is ahead of the original 2D Transformers ($27.8M) that debuted on Tuesday July 3rd, 2007. ”That is one huge number,” a Sony exec gushed to me tonight. “Unbelievable start to what should be a very exciting 6 days.”

LoL. So much for TAS bombing. Marvel ain't getting Spidey back anytime soon. Going to see this tomorrow. Can't wait.

The train stopping scene. For me that's the point where Tobey's Spidey went from meh to downright embarrassing and cringe-worthy.

Saw it last night. Solid movie, but nothing mindblowing.

Pros
+Garfield is a fantastic Spider-Man, Stone is adorable as Gwen, and Sheen was a great Uncle Ben. More than their great individual performances, the chemistry between these three was also pitch perfect. Movie had a lot of heart.

+Action was well choreographed.

+Humor was great; not straight cheese like most of the humor in Raimi's trilogy, but just genuinely funny situations and witty Spider-Man smartassery.

+Loved the way the movie looked

+Didn't dwell on the origin story bits too much, thankfully.

Cons
-Lizard was a horrible villain. He never once felt dangerous, Connors' character arc makes no sense in the movie (he leaps into cartoonish supervillain behavior practically overnight), and nothing about him ever felt earned. Worst villain in this movie franchise yet.

-Action was way too short, which is a shame because, like I said, the fights were all choreographed really nicely. But nothing here matched the spectacle of SM2 or the hard-hitting oomph of SM1's fights (e.g. like the brutal last Spidey/Goblin fight).

-Captain Stacey was not a good character and Denis Leary did not do a good job playing him.

+Pacing was all over the place. A lot of people are pointing to the first 20-30 minutes for having this problem, but really the whole film moved too quickly. The story felt undercooked, the way it developed didn't feel earned (lots of easy contrivances like
"property of Peter Parker" on the back of the camera, come on
), and there just wasn't much dramatic weight to anything.

+Origin was unnecessary. And I'm not saying this as part of the "it's too early to reboot" crowd, I'm more than fine with them rebooting the series, but the origin story here just felt superfluous. It didn't do anything differently here from Raimi's first movie, but more than that, it just wasn't done well here at all. It moves too quickly and doesn't do all that good job of establishing Peter Parker as a character. I feel like Vanderbilt and Webb already assumed the audience was mostly familiar with who Peter is already, so just provided the cliff notes version of the origin. But in that case, why bother with it at all? I think the story would have benefited greatly without going through those motions again and simply starting with Garfield already as Spider-Man.

Overall, a solid 7/10, maybe 8/10. I liked the movie, loved the leads, and definitely want to see a sequel. But the movie had a lot of disappointing issues and never really impressed me the way Raimi's first Spider-Man did.

The movie definitely would have been better if it took notes from Spectacular Spider-man like having Peter already be SM but still giving a good introduction to what he's going through, as well as taking cues for the Lizard.

Also is it me or did he never actually say "If you want the truth Peter, come and get it" in the actual movie?

Seems like a love it or hate it type movie. not much middleground in here. I'll see it sometime next week.

It's not offensive in any way to really hate. It's more of a 'love some parts, hate other parts' type of film.

I don't think it is. It looks like they scrapped the majority of the Untold Story to save for a sequel. They even cut out the "Do you have any idea what you really are?" part that Connors says in one of the trailers.

I haven't seen the film yet but I have a feeling that you may be over estimating just how much Webb had to do with the finished film. ASM is only his second film and many of the big action set pieces that are in the film are almost certainly done by a the 1st/2nd unit 'action' teams with only cursory input from Webb himself.

This is the case with most expensive, modern event films such as this. As I said earlier in the thread but this is the way Universal makes it's Fast & Furious films.

It feels to me that Sony have already decided to go a different route with the second ASM film and with the hiring of Orci/Kurtzman it almost feels (sight unseen) that they are going for a 'psuedo reboot' making it a broader action/adventure film. The sort of thing Orci/Kurtzman specialise in.

But, as ever, we shall see.

LoL. So much for TAS bombing. Marvel ain't getting Spidey back anytime soon. Going to see this tomorrow. Can't wait.

I've seen a few people express this thought recently and I don't get it. ASM could have been a Battleship sized box office disaster and Sony still wouldn't have been obliged to give Marvel any rights back.

The only way Marvel have a chance to get the Spider-Man rights back is if Sony sells it's film & TV division.

Anyone who thought TAS would bomb after the success of the original trilogy was a fucking moron, through and through

I don't think anyone expected it to bomb but Spider-Man is without exception Sony's biggest franchise and the studio couldn't really afford to have perform 'well' at the box office.

This film really needs to do, for want of a better word, spectacularly well at the box office. No half measures here.

I thought it was a great film, better than the original. Most of the people I saw it with though thought it was just OK. The Spiderman stunts though are pretty cool and weren't all just CGI, they actually had a proper stunt team. I also love Emma Stone :-)

Emma-Stone-1.jpg

Do anyone know where I can find high resolution materials and photographies of The Amazing Spider-Man?

Also, why is Orci and Kurtzman so disliked? I truly don't know them.

Which is why Marvel would have eventually got the property back had ASM bombed. Sony wouldn't have risked making a sequel.

Nonsense. Sony would have just have waited as long as they (contractually) could have and then rebooted it again anyway. Why would they just hand the rights to their most valuable screen franchise to a direct competitor?

What do you think Disney would have done with it? Just introduced the character somewhere (Avengers sequel?) and then started producing their own Spider-Man films. Probably within the same time scale Sony would have rebooted Spider-man.

Disney are getting ready to make yet another Hulk movie thought to be ready for release in 2014. That would make it the THIRD attempt at starting a Hulk franchise.

They are all as shameless as each other.

Pretty much this. Most spider-man fans seem to be pleased with it, as a SM movie, so that's always a plus (esp. financially). As a 'film' some people are having issues with it, but most like it/say it was decent.

The few that avidly hate it for being unrealistic or cheesy really need to stfu and watch Raimi's SM movies. Some of the cheesiest, unrealistic, unexplained stuff in a comic book movie ever are in those movies.

It didn't make them poor movies and it won't make this one either.

I was pleased with the film. I don't think Emma or Andrew had much chemistry, but I liked them individually. Part of me wish we could just fast forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I'll have to reread the earlier posts to catch up on the discussion, but about the credits
Is that supposed to be Norman Osborn talking to Doc Connors??

Yeah.

Also, this isn't something I'd really hold against the movie as a negative, but the post-credits tag here was garbage.

The swinging in this movie was handled so well. He wasn't fucking superman and flying all around wherever he wanted to go like in the old ones. Just one of the many reasons why I loved this movie.

Some trailer played before this for some musical with Anna Kendrick from Twilight and it looks like the worst fucking movie ever made. It was so painfully bad and awkward that I heard people shifting in their seats when it ended, like everyone in the room were in hivemind mode about how shitty it was.

oh yeah it was called Pitch Perfect. if you didn't see the trailer, Youtube that shit especially if you like to cringe.

nvm here I'll make life "easier" for you:

This still seems like a drama starring Spider-Man. Still interested although it does not sound like I'll like it as much as Raimi's first 2.

I'm still trying to get my kids t see it, but they are adamant about Avengers which I have failed to see to this point and they're a little raw about it.
