MLS overtakes NHL and NBA as third-most attended league

The NBA is a poor quality product. Just kill half the teams. Bobcats, Raptors, Clippers, Timberwolves, Bucks, Magic, Warriors, Rockets, etc all deserve to die. And the lottery is fucking stupid. I'd also like to see them let players get a bit more physical instead of calling fouls for slaps on the wrist.

good for MLS, but what really matters is TV ratings. that's what's going to drive long term growth, like it did for soccer in Europe (especially the Premier League)

Those are dirt cheap too! haha.

I paid 11 bucks for a dodger ticket. That's how they get'em in for so many games.
the average cost of a mlb ticket is something like $25. And those $11 tickets are upper deck tickets, unless you got a really great deal.

I've never lived in an MLS market and it's not something I'm interested in the point to where I'd travel. Very cool that it's caught on though, I read where the Seattle Sounders were outdrawing the shitty Mariners.

Indeed.

TFC attendance is starting to tank. Really surprising considering how passionate TFC fans were. Thats what happens when you hike ticket prices and put a shitty team on the field.

The two main factors imho are ticket prices and amount of games. Tickets are dirt cheap and you only have 18 or whatever chances to see the team. With the NBA and NHL, tickets are expensive and you (normally) have 42 chances to see your team.

I get these promotional ticket dealies. I was on middle deck, the 100's? I don't know how much they charge for the top upper decks normally.

But yea, sitting down closer is gonna cost more. I think they do alot of promotions to fill those seats on a consistent basis. They want dat parking-concession monies.

MLSE are easily among the worst owners in all of sports. Craps/Leafs are really no better too.

And MLS has been built up the right way, kudos to them. They remained patient and grew the league in the right way.

If your team is bad you can sneak down to decent seats pretty easily. Becoming more and more difficult in Cincinnati.

Not too surprising. The NBA is a terrible organization. There are too many teams, the regular season is too long, the playoffs are far too long, the officiating is horrible, and worst of all, there is ZERO parity - even less than the MLB.

David Stern needs his ass fired. He's a cynical old bastard who is completely unwilling to respond to any legitimate criticism.

Not sure everyones prices but my local team, Philly, here is the pricing

I don't get the disparity in pricing for Manchester United. Nothing priced too high or too low.

I generally agree with you.

But the utility of college sports comes from the historic rivalries and the fact that none of the athletes are spoiled mega-rich-and-famous superstars.

Eh, I get that argument, but at the end of the day I just want to see the mot talented at what they do. I'd rather see grown-men, who are spoiled, battle it out then young(er) kids, even if they have a lot more to lose. That's just me though. Plus there are some damn great rivalries in the pros as well.

NBA is also really expensive if you want anything other than nosebleeds. I think this is where the MLB thrives. You can pay $30 for decent seats, but baseball is much more of an atmospheric sport. I'd rather watch the NBA and NFL on TV to be honest than go in person and be out a few hundred dollars.

MLS needs promotion/relegation. There's more than enough cities in the US to have 60+ teams.

More teams? Fuck, the NFL is hotter than anything and they only have a little more half than what you suggest, and sometimes even that feels a bit too many.

What a terribly misleading thread title.

That would be a great idea if you were looking to destroy the league yeah.

Wouldn't relegation mean that like half those teams are essentially a minor league? I think some smaller cities could support MLS teams, but the problem would be could those teams move up and then compete with the Galaxy and NY teams financially?

If you could please excuse my ignorance as an Englishmen, but what is so good about the Sounders that gives them the great attendance average?

edit. It looks to be a capacity issue with some teams but not others.

There's no other teams in Seattle to root for. THe Mariners suck and the drive to OKC to support the Sonics is too far.

I find the 300's, at half court to be good for me and my price range most of the time at staples. Sitting at the corners in the 100's sucks kinda.

Yea, I would almost prefer watching NBA/NFL at home sometimes. Still try to get out though once in while for football.

Watching soccer at Home Depot center is pretty fun though to me. I would rather be there than at home watching it. Easy parking, doesn't cost that much, good view from almost everywhere.

They have a decent team, television coverage better than that of other teams in the league (so I hear), and I guess they've built a foundation/culture in the city.

I can't stand their fans though. They, at least the ones on the internet, are the most arrogant and "hipster" like fans I have ever seen.

Hipster and football fan is not something you often see in the same sentence. You crazy Yanks :-)

Those Seattle fans are pretty hype when they are at the LA games. I guess they travel well and like the drive down here, or there are a bunch of fans down here.

They do the chanting and everything.

Canadian :P

Their fans come off as people who have big egos and think they are the best and the most "true" football team and city in North America.

If I could describe them in one word, it would be: Egotistic

Well, what do you expect? They did found MLS after all.

I went to a FC Dallas game in May and it reminded me of a ballet.

Players diving, prancing, it seemed very sureal. It's alot different live.

The stadium seemed half full, and it was very quiet.

It's not the edge of the seat game like hockey is.

Funny I talk about this now, my boss came into my office earlier today pissed that I'm writing off $300 in cab fare to get to Frisco from Fort Worth for the game.

Found a pic I took on my cell phone that day :

as a Montrealer, i hate the atmosphere of the Olympic Stadium and dread ever supporting any event in that awful place.

I have never been to the outdoor Sapputo Stadium, maybe I will give it a try when a good team shows up to play against. I am not an Impact fan so I would go just to see

I hate that ticket prices are so high. We need ticket prices to go down a bit and to be frozen.

I went to the TFC-Union match back in.. May (?) and fuck me, each ticket was $50 after taxes and fees. The view wasn't even that great :| 11th row in section 110.. ugh.

The next time I go, I'm gonna grab some seats in the 30th row or in the upper deck. Fuck that, I'm not even gonna go because this team is so fucking shit and ownership can't even manage a game of foosball :@

The league has a ways to go, but I think you would have to be willfully ignorant to not see that the sport as a whole is really starting to catch on in the U.S.

Another question, am i right in thinking footie/soccer is the most played sport in US schools? But loses out at Uni level

Going from personal experience everyone, including me, played soccer up to the high school level and then it was basketball/football that got the most attention. For college it's mostly football and basketball depending on the schools. Some schools are more known for b-ball than football.

No sport is really immune from a few of those problems. The MLB, NHL, and NBA all have too many teams and too many games, because the pressure exists from the owners to always add more sources of revenue. The NFL is about the only professional organization that has expanded intelligently, and only partly because it runs a disciplined ship. The NFL has been able to add more teams because the growth is sustained and not ephemeral, and the one game a week format, which was born out of logistical necessity more than anything else, turned out to perfectly capture exactly what America wanted.

With that said, the NBA has really fallen behind the other leagues in cultivating a good game day atmosphere. The other leagues all have something going for them. The MLS has the soccer-like atmosphere. The MLB is still one of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon. The NHL is acclaimed as possibly the best sport to see in person. Even the NFL, which is slowly sucking the atmosphere out of its stadiums, at least can rely on its sheer popularity. You might be able to say of the NBA that TV cannot capture the athleticism of its stars, who must be seen in person, but that's also true of the NFL and NHL.

no. It's the most played for young children but once you hit high school its all about football or basketball
I played soccer in high school and it was nowhere near as popular as football or basketball

They really stepped into a void in the market, immediately after the NBA team the Sonics left. It's also rare for Seattle teams to be this good and garner so much attention- the Mariners and Seahawks are mostly sucky, forgotten teams, but the Sounders have won three US Open Cups in a row and have the second best combined record over the 3 and a half seasons they've been in the league. Seattle is also long on the demographic that seems to like MLS most- 20-something white professionals and hipsters.

Well since NBA/NHL arenas seat less than 20,000 compared to the NFL/MLB stadiums which seat 35,000-to 70,000 it makes sense that they charge more for seats.

Though I have to say in NYC, Mets and Yankees tickets have skyrocketed exponentially to the point that going to a ballgame is no longer a spur of the moment thing to do.

The new expensive stadiums are to thank for this. My dad tells me stories about how he and his buddies would go do a Dodger game after work like it was just going to a bar. Tickets were like $2 or something. Nowadays you can't get a water at a sporting event for $2.
