Mediocre movies really are the worst. There's NOTHING worse then coming out of a film and your biggest emotional reaction is "Meh".

Haven't seen ASM though, impressions have been all across the board, though. I'm going in with low expectations.

Mine couldnt get much lower. They were so low I planned to paint my kitchen today instead of seeing this...but I got talked into it. So we go...andddd Im glad I had the aisle seat. By the 40 minute mark I was leaning into the aisle to see what kind of sneakers people had on. Ive been looking for a new pair of running sneakers, saw some nice ones.

Gave myself a day to let it sink in: I thought it was great.

Andrew Garfield is the perfect Peter Parker and Spider-Man. I thought Tobey Maguire was, as well, and that meant some big shoes to fill. I thought he did a great job. Going from introverted Peter to asshole Spider-Man, and having the two personalities blend in once he got his powers was well done.

Emma Stone is also a great fit as Gwen Stacy. Both her and Garfield had amazing chemistry on-screen. Dunst and Maguire had good chemistry, but not like this. Any scene they had together was a huge plus.

Martin Sheen made a good Uncle Ben. He wasn't the pushover type like Cliff Robertson's Uncle Ben (also brilliant). He really played the surrogate father figure quite well. In retrospect, I wouldn't have minded seeing a more authoritative Uncle Ben for the Raimi Spider-Man.

Sally Fields as Aunt May wasn't as strong as Sheen's Uncle Ben, but they had good chemistry on screen. I also liked that Aunt May seemed younger and more able-bodied than Rosemary Harris. Harris was brilliant as Aunt May, I should add, but she came off more as a grandmother than aunt, if that makes sense.

Rhys Ifans was average as Doctor Connors. Not terrible, not great - under-utilized, I think. There's nothing revealed about him (other than losing his arm) to make me care. As the Lizard, even less.

Denis Leary was also pretty average as Captain Stacy. Also under-utilized and tough to care about.

The big reveal where Captain Stacy realized that Peter was Spidey felt flat to me, since it had already been revealed to Gwen earlier in the film. Could've been better if Gwen didn't know, and her dad found out. Would've made having him promise Peter to keep Gwen out of it more complex.

I liked seeing the costume come together. Looking through the internet for spandex outfits and seeing him develop the web shooters was a nice scene to add. The time used for the scene could've been used for something else, but I thought it was a nice touch seeing him put it all together.

Having Coldplay's Till Kingdom Come play through a montage of him skateboarding and trying out his new powers was another nice touch. I'm not a fan of the usually heavy metal/rock music that accompanies other Superhero movies, so it was a nice change to all that.

Maybe a minor thing, but I also liked that the villain didn't die. Spider-Man doesn't kill, and he doesn't just let them die.

The first 20-30 minutes seemed really disorganized or incoherent, but the rest of the movie really picks up after. Like I said, I could've used a story without Peter's parents bailing out on him and why. I would've been satisfied with simply "I live with my aunt and uncle" line, like in the Raimi movie.

While the music isn't as epic as Danny Elfman's, I still enjoyed James Horner's music. The piano track with the Lizard sneaking around in the lab with Gwen hiding was awesome.

I still have a million other things I should write, but I'll keep it to those points.

honestly, it seems like most people who seem to have REALLY liked it, I don't mean people saying "yeahh ehh it was enjoyable" I mean really really liked it, all seem like people that didn't like the Raimie movies at all or something. Not everybody though, just a lot of people I guess.

Just an unscientific observation. I thought the movie was very average as I've stated many times. Garfield is a good actor, but don't buy him so much as Parker, story was average, world was average. IMO only thing not average was gaddamn Emma Stone. It doesn't help that I'm a sucker for Gwen Stacey (ultimate universe especially) and she reminded me of her a lot with some of dem outfits.

Gwen (Howard) was barely a character.

She was there to swoon over the jiggly.

Twas an okay movie. Certainly nothing outstanding.

I'm kind of hyped for 2 if they are going for the man-spider route as it appears.

From what others have said, it looks like it's bad if you're a hardcore Raimi's Spider movies and still pressed about him leaving.

That's not it at all, at least in my case. I went in wanting to like this movie and was very open to experiencing something fresh and memorable. Instead, I left feeling entirely apathetic towards it and very comfortable in my preference for Raimi's.

I loooved it. Much better than the original Spider-Man 1. 2 is still the one to beat though, even if I havent seen it in a while.

I liked that, to me, the narrative threads all followed a logical path so when he becomes Spider-Man you can actually kind of see it, its not like he just up and decides to fight crime, he has a clear purpose. I loved that.

I also liked that they reinvent what Peter Parker being a nerd is like. Socially a bit awkward and nerdy, but not socially incompetent. In the books and movies I always thought how it was weird for him to be a shut-in and then be able to talk mad trash when he got his powers. In this movie the character transitions make sense due to properly built backstories.

Gwen was great, really great. Also liked that it treats the audience with a bit of respect, it clearly benefits from the earlier movies still being fresh in the audiences mind and so the movie doesn't slow down too much in origin stuff.

Great reboot, really excited for whatevers next.

What I really liked about the film that I hope this series continues to explore is the idea of a teenager as a superhero. Raimi's Spider-Man never had a level of immaturity to him, at least after Uncle Ben died. This Spider-Man doesn't really seem to realize all that's at stake, he doesn't realize the danger that he is in and that he's putting those around him in. He's probably one of the most immature, while still well-intentioned, superheroes we've seen on screen and I kind of dug that.

But you had preference for Raimi in the first place right? I always feel that 1st media preference comes into play whether or not you'll like this new film.

I have no preference in Raimi's films, in fact I hated his films. So I'm interested to see if I like the film or not. Mind you, it's possible that I may not like it either. After Prometheus, I learned that even the most hyped film for me can be so disappointing.

ehh I liked Raimie's first 2 a lot but I was still open to this. But when we started getting info it started seeming like something I'm not SO into. Despite being a giant spiderman fan. Surprised with some stuff, disappointed by more. That was it.

I was a fan of Burton's batman but lord help meeeee Nolan is killing it. Previous preferences aren't a big deal. I always hope for something better. Who wouldn't! I liked xmen 1 and 2 a lot, and really liked xmen first class.

I don't know...because I actually still prefer Burton's Batman to Nolan's Batman. As for X-men 1/2 and first class, they all are still within the same continuity. First class is not really a reboot. It's basing the story on Xmen 1/2 lore that Singer created right down to Magneto/Mystique partnership.

Well his last work with the franchise was with the turd knows as Spiderman 3 and that left a pretty bitter aftertaste.

Really enjoyed the film, some small nitpicks being how quick the development of the web shooters and suit was, and the villain wasn't particularly interesting. I've been reading a lot of Ultimate Spiderman, and was kinda hoping for a badass gwen stacey like in those comics, but the gwen stacey portrayed in ASM was good too. And is it just me or does Andrew Garfield have an unusually long neck? He's a good actor dont get me wrong, but my god i couldn't stop thinking about how long his neck is.

I'm confused. Was more time really needed to develop the webshooters and costume? I mean I thought the way the costume was developed was fine, you had your prototype, then your actual suit. It could've been cool if maybe we had Peter working steadily on the web shooters while working on fighting crime at the same time. I still feel that it was fine though time wise.

Just got back from the theatre; I saw it in 3D and thought the film was fantastic - much better than any entry of the previous trilogy.

The story definitely moved WAAY fast - characters and their subsequent relationships could have used an extra 20 mins of dev time rather than Peter 'I can make anything' Parker, family overnight, and husband and wife at first sight, but everything else about the film was super impressive.

Doctor Connors was in the teaser. If he has a part in the next movie, I can't think of too many other reasons to show him off again if the man spider isn't involved. Unless they try to go with venom again perhaps.

If they do Venom again, I swear off all future Spider-man movies. I know it can be done right, but I don't want that so soon after the last trilogy. I'd be fine if it were like TASM 4, but as part of the current trilogy. No.

What do you guys think the sequel will be called? I can't say I like "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

Do we use another comic title, ala "The Spectacular Spider-Man?" Do they pull a Dark Knight and call it something like "The Webbed Wonder?"

What do you guys think?

Nope. Raimi was done, and so was his cast. As much as I remain unimpressed by ASM, I'm certainly glad the franchise can at least move forward with this new cast and make something interesting in future films. I absolutely believe that a Raimi Spider-Man 4 would have been an even bigger disaster than 3.

I'd guess they'll pull one of the other long-running comic series titles.

Spectacular Spider-Man
Web of Spider-Man
Peter Parker, Spider-Man
Astonishing Spider-Man

They could go a long way with just [Adjective] Spider-Man. Or hell, go full-bore and call it Amazing Spider-Man: The Death of Gwen Stacy.

No, cakefoo (although I do laugh at your posts... all the time!). I sometimes am even very moved emotionally in tons of movies!

It's just, ya know, films have to earn their emotional moments and not also be accompanied by the funniest crying face ever in history. I'm sure you thought your comment was clever, though, so let me steer clear of your internal fist pumping so I can go to this damn party with fireworks. AMERICA woo!
Nobody laughed in my packed theater at the moment Ben died. Everyone but you apparently can respect the emotional intent of the story and the viewer who are paying good money to enjoy a film free of disruptive assholes. If you were in my theater I would have liked to walk over to you and kick you in the vagina.

Well, what we saw in this movie was elements of many of the Spidey comic universes being pulled together. TSSM would be a cool sequel name, then Ultimate Spider-Man could be the third! I would like that.

Plenty of laughs and snorts in my theater when Peter reacted to Ben's death, although not so much as in the scene with The Lizard in the lab making wacky faces. Ben's death is played very well up to the point when Peter starts Acting. The intent of the story doesn't matter much if the execution is lacking.

The teaser was to hint at more Parker parent secrets down the road. I don't think Man-Spider can be done right live action.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I think it'd make a nice nod to the comic book audience member. Like if it were on a screen in Oscorp in the next movie.

Also, just had a fun thought. What if Peter dies in TASM 3 and Miles Morales takes over in TASM 4? (obviously we'd be introduced to him in TASM 3)

One thing that I was sold from the very beginning was Garfield and Stone's casting. I also can easily see their chemistry from the trailers and from pics like this:

Just got back from a fairly late showing of this.

I thought it was pretty good for being a reboot/re-imagining of a movie franchise barely a decade old.

Is it as good as the original Spiderman or Spiderman 2? Maybe on par, but certainly not better.

Theres nothing worse than a dull movie. Not good, not so bad its good..just a middle of the road piece of dry white toast. I hate movies that waste my time. If its not going to be great or at least good then be Fantastic Four bad, so we can at least find something to laugh at for 90 minutes. Fuck Spider-man.

This is why I hate the Marvel Studios movies barring Avengers and IM1 so much.

It does to me, don't state your opinion as fact. I would kind ask with a swift act of physical harm that snickering twerps save the LOL's for when the GIFs are posted in a hilarious context on a forum.

I don't like Amir0x's accusation that some people are "easy" to engage emotionally just because we allow the writing to override the acting at key moments.

Oh, and I haven't read much of this thread yet, but there was a (somewhat?) minor plot hole near the end. Spiderman has the lizard serum in his hand - he could've just jammed it in (or whatever) to save Gwen Stacy's father to lizify him which would let him regen, saving his life. Figure out the reversal shit later (they already had an antidote recipe.)

But it's kind of acceptable in that it's heat of the moment, and how crazy a move like that would be in the first place.

so much polarizing opinions.!
Making me confused about my decision to see this movie instead of Avengers

Seems fairly common for Gaf, and if high praise from critics and audience can't convince you to check out The Avengers not sure if there is anything that will.
