Nintendo Downloads - July 2012

So does the Theatrhythm DLC show up in in the eShop directly in the EU and the game?

It seems to be Game only for NA.
I'd rather it be availble in both places for the future.
 
An update for Swap Note is out (the eShop alerted me about it when I loaded it just now). Anyone knows what it is about?

Heroes of Ruin demo is pretty entertaining, but man, it is one ugly SOB graphically. I'm guessing this is to keep the 4 player online play smooth. Seems like it could be the co-op game I'm really looking for, even more than NSMB2. Probably not shelling out full price for two copies at launch though.

Nintendo 3DS owners will from today be able to swap and collect a specific collection of virtual cards featuring some of their favourite characters when a free Virtual Card Album launches for Nintendo 3DS today. Some cards for this Virtual Card Album are available in 3D and others will feature brand new artwork, meaning that Nintendo fans will have lots of reasons to try and collect them all.

To kick off your collection simply visit the Nintendo eShop to get the free Card Pack, featuring the Virtual Card Album and 5 virtual cards. The collection will feature well known characters such as Mario and Sonic, to name a few. Further virtual cards will be distributed regularly via SpotPass meaning that you will in no time have plenty of cards in your Virtual Card Album to begin collecting and swapping with friends.

It is possible to have multiples of the same cards so make sure you know which cards your friends need so that you can swap your duplicates for any you need to help complete your virtual collection. Swaps take place via StreetPass and through a Local Connection with your friends, you can allocate which of your collection you want to swap and once you agree to a trade it will happen automatically.

Some cards are rarer than others and there are various ways to get the rarest cards for your collection beyond simply swapping them with your friends. If you want to unlock the rarest cards, then ensure to take your Nintendo 3DS around with you while you’re out and about. By walking around with your Nintendo 3DS in Sleep Mode you can earn up to 10 Play Coins every day, these can then be exchanged on rare cards for your collection.

Similarly, some rare cards will become available by visiting designated locations and events so make sure you keep an eye out for announcements as to their whereabouts and that you have your Nintendo 3DS to hand when on the move.

Amazon has the preorder set at $30, so you could get 2 copies for $20 off.
 
So I booted up Ice Climbers and played it for a good 10 minutes before I quit out of frustration. How did they get the jumping in a game about jumping so wrong? The collision on some things is just crazy. o_O
 
Man Nintendo seems to have really stepped up their efforts on the digital front. Actually kind of pleased with the VC library they've built up in just over a year and finally we're starting to see what appears to be a cohesive store.

We're getting demos, DLC, original software, updates/patches, and soon full retail downloads.

Finally Nintendo.
 
Nothing for me this week aside from demos and updates. I would get some Theatrhythm DLC but I'm saving my money towards futire VC releases.

Bring on next week! :)
 
Does the Wii VC still make you buy points in increments, or can you bring up a too-low amount to the price of a game and just pay the difference? (like on 3DS)

I haven't bought a VC game in a while so I forget.

Increments still, I believe.

Paying the difference will likely be there for WiiU though.
 
I really wished they fixed that.

I'm getting a 2000 point card in the mail soon. I want two 16-bit games, so after that I'll have to spend another 10 bucks if I want, for example, a NES game.

A SNES game, Genesis game, and NES game cost 2100 points. Sheesh. I don't get why the 3DS VC is one way and the Wii VC was never fixed to be similar.
 
Nice to see that the Heroes of Ruin demo has 30 uses. Didn't Europe's demo only have 6?

Also, interesting to see that the price for NSMB2 is now "TBD."

I don't think Nintendo cares for the Wii anymore to fix it. :/

I really hope the WiiU eShop is handled much better than the others, but I have my doubts.

Yup, and maybe next generation they'll catch up with this one.
 
I just played the Mutant mods demo, and I didn't really like it. It was too slow paced IMO (The first 4 levels for that matter). Does the game get better the more you play it, and how long is the game?

The levels get much more difficult obviously, but it's never a fast-paced game, despite the time limit. Even when you're crunched for time, the game plays better when you take a more methodical approach. In total, there are 20 regular levels, and 20 secret levels.
 
Wow, good download week, things really are starting to pick up and come together. And download play for select NES games is an exciting prospect.

And I've still barely touched NES Open since I got it almost a year ago as an Ambassador (interesting that on the shop marquee for the game it has a "3DS Ambassador" logo next to it, I guess to uh, remind me I already have it? But OTOH Zelda doesn't have an Ambassador label and it won't make sense to many others), are there any good tips on how to play the game? It just doesn't feel like I'm doing anything and can't even seem to change the drive of my swing. Really wish they'd given us something like StarTropics or Punchout, golf is just...meh.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. Looks like I won't be getting this game. Saves me some money for the Theatrhythm DLC!

I don't really get the praise for it, either. It's mechanically competent, to be sure, but there's nothing other than the VB Wario Land-style plane jumping (which the demo levels don't even do anything particularly interesting with) that really distinguishes it from other titles in the genre.

Think he meant as part of the ambassador program. Which I agree with; I didn't mind the absence at first since it seemed clear to me that they were gonna make it into a 3D Classic, but then when it popped up for sale on the Virtual Console I lost all my enthusiasm

Though I think the golf game is actually pretty ok for what it is, my second most played NES game on there aside from Balloon Fight

I've been looking forward to Heroes of Ruin since I first heard about it and am excited the Demo is finally out in the US. I downloaded at work and tried it for about 2 minutes but will really dive in on the ride home.

I admit I'm very biased and not much will deter me from wanting this game. I know the reviews have just been good but not great. Sometimes I just gotta ignore the reviews and get something because I want it.

I will say I think the game looks fine. My favorite system of all time has been the DS, so I'm use to things not looking stellar. I just care if it's fun. I haven't gotten a game since Uprising, but in the next month, I'll be getting 3 games. :)
 
Did anybody else just lose their Nintendo Magazin too?

Agreed, I finally played the demo a couple days ago and completed everything and I was scratching my head as well.

In the Japanese version I think it only appeared through the game. But you don't have to go to the eShop to add funds, it'll let you do it through the game connected to the eShop :)

The later (and bonus) stages in the game is really where the challenge is. I found the title really quite simple for three quarters of it, but the last quarter was a great throw back to late 80s / early 90s platforming. It's not the same, but it reminded me of Keen for some reason.

Although the basic mechanics are solid, it has nothing that sets it apart. After the first level I thought to myself: "Is this really all there is to it? Maybe the next levels will change something". But aside from playing in different layers (which is the same thing, only closer or further away) it's just really basic. Which could be fun, but after playing countless of platformers (all of them with a nice pace) this one just feels dull.

Well to be fair, the demo doesn't give you access to any of the power-ups, right? They all change the way you approach the levels quite drastically. Any of the 20 main levels can be beaten with any power-up (or none) as far as I'm aware, but each provides unique advantages.

This is also not entirely true, although it may just be because the first few levels don't give a good impression of the remainder of the game. The key difference between the layers is the amount of screen real estate available. When you're at the back, there's a lot more crap going on, but it gives you time to see what's coming.

In the front, it's less busy, but it feels like you could just get jumped at any time.

Some of the levels use this design to great effect.


That said, it's not a perfect game, but I think it does enough new and interesting to be worthwhile for most people who are looking for a solid platformer. It also doesn't hurt that the music is great. Wish it were a couple bucks cheaper though.

Seemed okay to me, but I didn't get to finish any of the sidequests I picked up because I stumbled upon the boss room, was immediately locked in, and then beat her and got a "thanks for playing!" screen. That kind of soured the experience for me since it basically cut out half of the demo because I happened to go down the wrong path.
 
Has anyone come anywhere close to unlocking the Ultimo mission on the Iron Man table in Marvel Pinball? I've spent about 6 hours on that table alone, and I'm not sure I'll ever come close.

The actual game locks you into bosses / quest rooms after save points, but lets you hang around the level after you've finished the scenario so you do get to end levels when you want.

I wasn't aware I was reaching the end of the demo, like the poster above. There were a couple of save points, and I didn't have a clue I was coming up to the demo boss. I had not finished exploring the area.

But the demo basically showed me what I needed to know.
