Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I don't think anyone was searching your post history. The point was there have been several threads about Guild Wars 2, and many of us have been reading these threads quite thoroughly and there have been very few complaints about the UI. The general consensus has been that it is clean, unobtrusive, and functional. There is certainly still room for improvement, and there have been many improvements over the last couple of betas, but I just don't see how it's ugly.

Maybe if you were to post a screenshot that illustrates your point, it might be easier to discuss this.

Looks like they have improved it somewhat, or have at least allowed people to scale the UI back.

For comparison's sake, there is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0jb2_mM4TM&feature=player_detailpage#t=364s

The scale of the UI, minimap, and combat scroll text is massive. The font is almost like comic sans. The colour palette of the skills doesn't really match the environment. It certainly pops out, but kind of clashes at the same time.

More recently, we have:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&list=ULHjzCSrWLo4Q&v=HjzCSrWLo4Q#t=761s

The UI and Minimap are scaled back (I'm guessing this is an in-game option?). I still find the font kind of ugly but the colour pallete of the skill bar doesn't seem to clash so much (that could be due to the class chosen). Overall the colours in the skill UI still kind of look like my favourite neon shirt from the 90s.

Look, I think the game looks like it will be amazing fun. The UI is really my only beef with it. So hopefully no one takes this personal. Here is a pretty good video of why I think GW 2 will be a nice change of pace.

Why can't I play this game now?!?!?

WAAAA

So, any opinions on the best GW2 forum or news/analysis/speculation site to pass the time?

Please dont say Guru. I went there a few times and honestly felt dumber afterwards

Guru...just kidding, don't EVER go there. The MMO champion gw2 subforum is active with all kinds of discussions, but beware of the WoW trolls and general idiots.

So I know there's new pvp options, but what is their reasoning for no more GvG? Did they explicitly state anything about it or did they just want to move in a new direction?

Probably because you can join as many guilds as you want so the rankings really wouldnt be as significant if you could only choose one

Im perfectly fine with it

Yeah I never really got into GvG when I played the first game, so it's no great loss to me, but I wouldn't mind the option. If anything it could be something they add later, although I don't know how they would get around rankings being insignificant.

I'd wear it

How do I start War in Kryta?

This dude won't give me the quest, and I meet the requirements listed on the wiki.

You sure you've gotten your ducks lined up?

If your character has not completed Eye of the North then The Missing Vanguard quest and either The Knowledgeable Asura or Zinn's Task must be completed.

Hit me up in game if you want. (mornkor tallrock)

I'm probably going to rattle some cages here with this, but whatever, I just have to ask...

Why all the GW1 talk here? Isn't there a GW1 thread for that? I realize what you do in 1 plays into 2 with HoM, and we don't have a ton to talk about being in between BWEs, but surely we can do more than dwell in the past...

My intentions are noble - as someone who joined this community specifically for this thread (and has since found more to do elsewhere as well) and who didn't play GW1, I feel it stifles the conversation a bit for those not in the know.

It's easier to keep track of one thread rather than two and there's not much to talk about anyways.

That scavenger hunt was annoying. :/

Hated that scavenger hunt.... Mostly because I wanted to get the best presents from him.

Has there been official confirmation on how long a name will stay reserved? I am gonna name grab and then actually recreate my characters afterwards.

I joined for pretty much the same reason. Each time there is a GW1 post I read halfway through, realize my folly and die a little inside.

The good news is, you will be in the know when the game launches and all the GW1 players are blinged out with titles and fire swords!

I'm in the same boat (edit - well, technically not since I applied long before I boarded the GW2 hype train, but its the reason I'm glad I got approved when I did), but I don't really make a big deal about the GW1 chatter. There are a few times where I've read a post, and thought they were talking about something interesting and then... awww just GW1 (not that GW1 isn't interesting, but you know what I mean). For the most part it's easy to identify the GW1 posts and skip over them.

If you have something interesting to discuss about GW2, feel free to bring it up, and the GW1 conversation will die down for a bit.

Meh, I don't mind the GW1 chatter. We'd just be bitching about how agonizing the wait is, what class/race combo we're going to play, and taking little jabs at D3/WoW/Tera. Conversations we've already had plenty of times before.

Wonder if we will get any leaks on some beta changes soon? That would give us something to talk about.

Yes, some patch notes for BWE3 would stir things up pretty good here. I think I follow just about every class (with the exception of Ele and Necro), so does everyone else... so even something like Engineer or Thief notes slipping out would spur some discussion.

I'm really hoping melee picks up some tricks for taking out ranged enemies and Guardians get more offensive capabilities and some of their skills changed... like, any skill that makes you stand still to use it... which is... a lot of them... yeah I'll shut up now.

I just hope they improve Guardians' ranged capability a bit more. I played a lot of WvW in BWE1 with a Guardian, and while most of the time I was able to at least contribute, when we were assaulting a gate, or defending a gate from on top of a wall, there was literally nothing I could do. Even if Guardian's Scepter skills weren't so slow and short ranged, they had no verticality, so it was impossible to hit someone above or below you. I'm not sure if this changed in BWE2, but it led to a lot of boring moments where I had to just stand back and wait for my team to do something.

Range is an issue for everyone. I can't hit anything with my Elementalist even when someone is right below me within 1200 range.

And Scepter is the same range as a Warrior's longbow.

- Thief needs a second off-hand weapon (Sword makes the most sense).
- "Gwardian" needs either the Scepter radically changed for more ranged damage, or be given a new weapon (axe? dagger?) that's range-centric.

Thief just needs a new steal mechanic. That's one thing I was completely underwhelmed by in the betas. It was something I was looking forward to and thought it would be an interesting mechanic, but it turned out useless for the most part except for the free shadowstep.

But Warrior has a Rifle to deal with long range. Longbow is a midrange AOE weapon. If anything, Engineers and Thieves are the comparisons you should use with regards to range.

And yes, even ranged classes have issues with height, because vertical distance is included in the distance equation. But if 1200 range attacks have trouble dealing with altitude, its that much more of a problem for 900 range attacks. The problem with Guardian is that his scepter and staff auto attacks travel in a straight line. So even if someone is well within the maximum range of the attack, they still cannot be hit because the attack will simply hit the wall below them (or fly over their head).

Guardians have a couple 1200 range attacks, and most are on long cooldowns, and several 900 range attacks that are impractical for ranged combat. The problem isn't that the Guardian is less capable in ranged combat. The problem is there are situations where every other class can contribute, and Guardian is almost completely incapable of participating, namely keep assault and defense.

Of course my complaints could be completely outdated, and I hope they are.

Oh yeah, gun is longer range than bow.

Because of that Vertical issue, my elementalist has to get up very close. Being a glass cannon compared to a guardian, it really sucks.

I understand that. It's risky to get up close, but you can hit people by getting closer. I think I didn't explain the issue quite well before, so I'll just illustrate it in this picture:

VqtRn.jpg

While an Elementalist will have to risk getting closer in order to hit, a Guardian literally cannot hit with his Scepter auto-attack unless the enemy is at the same elevation as him. On top of that, the projectile moves so slowly it is unlikely to hit anyway, but lets just deal with the elevation issue now. This is the only auto-attack that Guardian has with 900 range. His only other ranged auto-attack is his staff 1 skill, which has 600 range and has the exact same problem.

Guardian only has a handful of skills that have 900 range or more, and almost all of them either have long-ish cooldowns, or are impossible to hit enemies with except under very specific situations. This is a problem. I don't mind that Guardian is close range focused. However, in a game mode like WvW where range is a big deal, even if its not unbeatable, being the only class incapable of doing much of anything at range puts Guardian at a distinct disadvantage, especially when it comes to uneven terrain.

For reference: http://www.guildwarsinsider.com/professions-weapon-ranges/

- Thief needs a second off-hand weapon (Sword makes the most sense).
- "Gwardian" needs either the Scepter radically changed for more ranged damage, or be given a new weapon (axe? dagger?) that's range-centric.

I definitely agree that Thief could use an extra weapon.

For Guardian, I wouldn't mind if they remade the existing scepter from scratch, but at the very least they need to do a total overhaul of the 1 skill. Its just not any good. It has 900 range, but it moves so slow that its not worth using except in close combat, and there are much better choices for close range weapons.

Thief just needs a new steal mechanic. That's one thing I was completely underwhelmed by in the betas. It was something I was looking forward to and thought it would be an interesting mechanic, but it turned out useless for the most part except for the free shadowstep.
That is devastatingly disappointing.
