And last, it's not really that confusing that he isn't a human/can't turn into a human. All titans we've seen so far except for Annie and Eren are like that.. so basically, Annie and Eren are the "exceptions", not the other way around.
I would suspect that the giant Titan at the beginning also is a transformed human considering how suddenly he'd appeared and disappeared.

You

The highlight in that Asano shot is using that "breathe release" after showing what could've been a final crying shot. You image that burst of emotion shift during the middle panel which also adds to the scene with the second character. The use of the fog is also very interesting as it almost invents atmosphere. I almost see it an exhale in emotion on that last panel even if that is not the actuality.

lol At big 3 crying scenes. As bland as cardboard, shoehorning ink into emotion. That one subtle Berserk shot destroys the other examples. Drawing emotions is possibly the most difficult thing to do in art. You don't have motion, therefore it is about provided a build-up and transition into that "burst" moments in a few panels (or single shot in painting, drawing, etc...). The big 3 are just showing concluding crying shots forced with stylistic ink strokes. It's hack and screams ink crying. I don't mind the constant big 3 art comparisons but I'm going to get miffed that these examples of "emotion" displayed on paper. Yuck.

See, that's why this sort of talk is silly. I know I'm dumb and I didn't spend time analyzing all the crying and all like you, but the shounen crying works on me (sometimes better than the examples you liked), it's just how I work. So let's be a little bit opinionated like we should.

Don't be offended but this sort of reminds me of how my literature teacher in high school was all like "but these words and these things and all that poetic marshmallows, for this and this reasons, much better than that stupid Harry Potter" and then a kid would say "but I liked Harry Potter more" and she'd glare the grade out of him

I still can't stand Asano's phototrace backgrounds. I don't know why, but they feel really cheap to me. It's weird since I loved the photo backgrounds in Osamu Kobayashi's Natsu no Sora.

"crying art stuff"
Yet you refuse to read the manga. Do we have to do another manga bet to get you to read it?

I'm fine with them most of the times, but there were couple of instances in Solanin where they felt out of place.

Damn right, that's why I added the "don't be offended" bit. She was really really terrible and traumatic for me.

I basically can't enjoy anything that has a hint of Israeli literature anymore (not that it was any good to begin with)

It works on you likely due to the narrative, not the art. Judging those scenes in a vacuum is perfectly acceptable. I'm not judging the quality of the works but just those specific depictions of emotion. The main thing lacking is atmosphere and facial transitions/detail.

Look I didn't bring this up before since I already go bloggish sometimes here, but I read manga exclusively for the art. EXCLUSIVELY and that goes for the trash reads as well. I am a visual person and enjoy manga art of all types. Even if it sucks, I enjoy it better then watching a TV show or movie. I was also an art major and am an artist (abstract oil). So when we get into depictions of emotion and atmosphere, it will peak my interest. So please don't give me the whole "literature teacher" spiel cause it isn't applicable. I'm not talking out of my ass like many art haters and usually just let the conversations go. But this one is one I want to talk about.

Here are some past works of mine using charcoal and one crayon sketch. I tried to specialize in unique atmosphere (I called it physical dark) and trying to sort of warp the reality. I'm far improved now but it illustrates composition, adding emotion to the scene (well as best as I could; I was a student then). It's not really about the scene but what you do with it. And most of the shown panels are so dry that they scream "comic." Like an empty use of ink and character templates cut from some fucked up model kit of art.

Of course don't take me too seriously here. ;) I obviously view manga differently then you panel skippers. *shakes fist*

I'll read it. But I should think about the manga bet again. We were going to do a pool.

You know I'm weak to confrontational speech gun-man, it's nice you threw that last sentence in there or I would have felt really bad
Ah yea sorry about that; forgot. What's worse if your selective memory though. ;) Need to keep reminding you that these are just whimsical posts and I don't think anybody ITT has "bad" taste, etc... Just different viewpoints. I simply do at times judge art and manga as a whole on their own plane. Which is why shounen annoys me since the narratives don't mix it up enough. So reading shounen is more of an art study to me then a manga read. A nice mix means my favorite manga; pretty simple. Lucifer BH is like one of my best examples here. It was just so well mixed, stylish and fresh. Damn good stuff.

We will always be cool man. Don't sweat if I quote ya and my demons come out.

None of the above applies to Stat Flow though. He's special.

Fiiixed that for you.

Hayate

I guess the coffin was tempered with by someone recently? Makes sense that whoever did it also put it in the house.

I assume even if A-tan got her memories back she'd be fine with opening it, so everything is dandy.

We cool.

We having a crying competition?

Nguruwa Kaihou 1-END

Decent student council comedy series. Felt pretty bad for the MC all the way through
and the ending sure didn't help matters.

Shingeki 35

Humanity could've won this conflict by now if they had their own horse launchers.

Nisekoi

  • Will be godlike when it becomes an anime
  • Such obvious trolls make them even more trollish
  • New girl is #2, Onodera doomed to bottom tier

SnK

This chapter was pretty boring outside of the DK titan. The patient wait 'til next month begins again.

Gunbo, I like your charcoal drawings, btw

Don't mind if I barge in, right? Clearly I'm new to GAF, but I've been reading manga ever since I finished the filler anime called Naruto. A fan of true shounen manga. Here's a look at my Currently Reading list on MAL:

Beelzebub chapter 163

A nice read, but not sure about this arc.

Bleach chapter 499

Ichigo has a busy schedule. I really like Kubo's artstyle/paneluse since the previous arc.

Fairy Tail chapter 290

Nothing special, although the ending is something to look forward to.

Gamaran chapter 147

Nice pace, looking forward to the big fight against Jinsuke.

Gintama chapter 405

Not sure about this arc. Sorachi took a while for this star wars parody.

Hajime no Ippo chapter 978

I hope Aoki continues and Kimura fights in the same weightclass. No decent action since Kimura vs Mashiba in their fights. Curious about Ippo's next match.

Hajimete no Aku chapter 143

The pace is too slow, but determined to see the ending.

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi chapter 481

Lol, Rimi and Ryuuto are getting closer to Shinpaku. Ryuuto has mad wheelskills.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part I-VII chapter 11

I recently finished part 6, it was awesome. Now I'm fully enjoying the different approach of the JoJo universe: Steel Ball Run (Part 7). After stage 1, I can clearly say that Zeppeli is one bad ass protagonist. Although Johnny is not that bad either and hurray for Dio "the jockey".

Katekyo Hitman Reborn chapter 392

The pace is great, probably the last arc. Great action and tsuna is finally becoming a man (sort of).

Naruto chapter 592

Decent chapter.

Nisekoi chapter 32

Slowly turning in a key-harem...

One Piece chapter 673

I hope Doflamingo will show up eventually.

Sket Dance 201

Toriko parody and no-tsukkomi battle, cool.

Toriko chapter 194

Ugly creatures, capture level 100... Still awesome though.

Shingeki no Kyojin

Holy shit.

Wall rose being breached, another type of (intelligent) titan, Mike killing 5 titans and still end up getting killed... too many questions right now, throw us a god damn bone you asshole of a mangaka.

love it

I think we're going to get more and more individual-ish Titans, to the point where they're actual characters that will stick around, versus the "type" attitude that we had until, well, Annie.

Now that I think about it, most noteworthy Titans have been a one-of-a-kind despite being labeled as a type, right? And pretty much none of them have been killed yet.

Yup, I think so as well. This way they can slowly reveal more and more about the titans as an entity but at the same time making them more mysterious. That wouldn't really work that well with showing new types IMO. I guess the manga could explore the different types more in-depth if it was weekly but I think I prefer this pacing more. These quick and dreadful encounters with special titans are where it's at.

Edit: One thing I don't like as much about Shingeki is how "terror" is conveyed on a world-scale. Yes, the small encounters are very well made but the world around them couldn't give less of a fuck it seems. We'll see how this will be handled next time I guess.
