Kanye West "My Music is Perfect" -- The Beethoven of this lifetime

He's not terrible, but at his absolute best he's very mediocre and often times puts out some of the worst rhymes possible. Take away the background track and a lot of his stuff is very simple; the kind of stuff the guy down the block who dabbles in rhyming comes up with in his spare time.

I've noticed that the people who think he's the best rapper ever tend to skew younger and are generally not exposed to hip hop music as a whole. Kanye himself knows he's not the greatest anything, so why do they think so? Because they buy into his troll antics. He almost didn't make it in the rap game because he obviously sucked big time in his demo tapes and no one liked his boring rap style. His delusion is that he was "too different," which of course doesn't explain Busta, Eminem, Outkast, and other "out there" artists making it big at one point or another.

Except he made that background track.

Kanye West is such an asswipe.

I don't like his music at all and statements like this would be ridiculous coming from even somebody who actually was good enough to be mentioned alongside Beethoven.

Haters of MBDTF are some of the craziest fans of rap I've met.
Or maybe only white people prefer it

For me:

MBDTF > College Dropout > Late Registration > Graduation > 808s

And for good measure, Radiohead, since it was mentioned earlier haha:

Kid A > Ok Computer > In Rainbows > Amnesiac > King of Limbs > The Bends > Hail to the Thief > Pablo Honey

The fact that he's still relevant and making critically acclaimed hits should at least mean something right? Especially in an industry where talentless, label manufactured stars come and go really fast.

If he was a hack as people say then he would have fizzled away after his first album.

its not just his raps alone that make him great. its everything about the man. he wants to be the best so he calls himself the best. the dudes drive is unlike anyone I have ever seen in the hip hop game.

Exactly. Dude's a garbage lyricist, but yet I still love all his albums, and he's probably my favourite hip-hop artist. There's no one quite like him.

I don't think he's a hack. I just think he's a great producer but a poor rapper. "Chi Town nigga with a Nas flow" is one of the most laughable things he has ever said, as well as his wishful thinking that he will be compared to the likes of Pun or Biggie after he's gone.

I know it sounds harsh, but I'm certain he's physically incapable of doing better, in the sense that some people are just naturally gifted at things like freestyling, improv, having precise comedic timing, or even just figuring out logic puzzles... while others aren't. It may be due to his car accident or he just isn't clever enough... who knows. But he's just kinda slow and awkward in the way he rhymes and probably always will be.

Fuck no. Twisted Fantasy was the definition of mediocre. Watch the Throne was even worse.

College Dropout and Late Registration are classics, but since then I've been less and less interested each time he puts something out.

It's been a while since I've heard some arrogant Kanye. I like his music, and he's talented, but I wouldn't call his music anything close to perfect.

This was perfection.

Seriously, I love that Kanye acts like Kanye.

Yes!

:(

what happened to this guy? i really liked his soulful samples and his stories of struggle.
he was more humble then; had more hunger..
as much as i like his current music, his ego gets in the way too much.

all falls down
i'll fall away/ spaceship
never let me down
slow jamz
my way
two words
through the wire
family business
home

all of em so great.. even the skits were entertaining (the first time around)

This is a great album, but I feel like he grew as an artist, and he really, really grew as a producer, because by the time he hit Graduation, every track was absolutely nailing it on all points. Not to mention the stuff he's done in Fantasy and 808's.

For all the 808 lovers:

I love 808's. It's an amazing album, and it holds a special place in my heart, and always will, because a lot of that shit really connected with me and spoke to me at the time. The thing is though, the dude just didn't really rap enough for me in it. It wasn't a rap CD. That isn't a bad thing necessarily, but what I love about Kanye, is him rapping, and creating fresh ass beats that combine with that rap to form something beautiful. That's why I love Graduation the most. Every single track is just on it at all times, and he's on fire.

For me, Late Registration > College Dropout >> Graduation >>>>>> everything else.

Those first two records are seriously so good. Might have to listen to Late Registration tonight.

What I enjoy about Kanye is that he's a perfectionist. He's serious about his craft. He never releases anything half assed. Gives it his all everytime.

It took him 5000 hours to get the song Power up to his standards. Not a lot of artists would put that much time into one song.

God I hate that douche. Glad his music isn't really for me (in general...I like specific songs) so I don't feel bad thinking he is trash.

For all the 808 lovers:

I'm a big fan of 808s but I wish he didn't rely so much on auto-tune for it. I can't tell whether it was more of a stylistic choice or just a practical option because he wasn't confident in his singing. I can imagine the album without the distracting auto-tune in my head and it could have been so much better.

I'll give him that. Even if I'm not personally into his recent stuff, he's never lacking for effort. And I kinda dig how every Kanye release is this big hyped event (even if they've been disappointing me for years now =[ )

808's is probably the only album where I can stomach auto-tune.

I'm with Bob on that one, but I still think it adds something to the album overall. It gives Ye a more alien, almost robotic tone in a lot of his songs, but instead of it just being a dumb song with dumb autotune, it's usually songs about being alone, or feeling alone, and the autotune gives off this nice vibe of being alone in like an alien land or something.

I seem to be the opposite of everyone here, I think Fantasy is by far the best, with 808 at second. The first three just feel very samey when compared to other artists.

You don't need to like Kanye - but to declare him to be talentless is just dumb. Say about his rap skills what you want, but at least as producer this guys rocks the goddamn world.

And btw: crazy Kanye = best Kanye

Do people really believe this? If he cared that much about the music he wouldn't have let MBDTF be mastered as badly as it was, would he?

Seriously, am I the only person that gets a headache from all the distortion and clipping on that album?
