Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

My main is likely going to be a male Asura Mesmer, or a female if I can snipe a certain name on August 25th.

Man I can't wait to customize some Asura during the next BWE.

The client'll carry over to launch, but they said to put it on your desktop and not in program files. Will I have to keep it on my desktop forever or can I move it somewhere more convenient?

My plan right now is

Charr Engineer
Norn Ranger
Sylvari Guardian
Asura Mesmer
Human Warrior

That obviously might change if I find out i dont like one of the classes

This video has an example of the vista feature in the Asura zone at around the five minute mark. I am not quite sure what the narrator is saying (it's in German) but the video shows the player reaching a vista point.

She says that the vista's have been added this build. Won't be easy to reach and add another factor for exploration minded gamers.
They're shown on the map but still not easy to find or get to. You need them for the map completetion of the area and rewards are given for discovering them.

The issue with Program Files was that Windows Vista and Windows 7 are very stubborn about permissions for that directory. They have said this will be fixed for the full release.

However, in the meantime you can move the file to pretty much anywhere else in your hard drive that isn't Program Files. There is no need to keep it on the desktop. Just make sure to move the .exe and the .dat file to the same location, or it will try to redownload the game.

Good stuff. Vistas are exactly as I imagined, and a great way to show off the beautiful scenery. What's more, I see they can be replayed as many times as one wants. :)

That was also my first contact with the Asura in a long time, having avoided watching the other videos. Their animations are MUCH better than I expected. For one, they finally managed to avoid the "little guys walk in fast forward" thing by making their run animation a skipping sprint; this is great because animations where the little guys take a hundred steps per second always look terrible; here, their steps are simply as long as everyone else because they are striding. I wonder if ArenaNet tried the opposite with the Norn: making their run animation a slightly hurried walk. Although I guess that might work not nearly as well and end up being exasperating instead.

Also, Asura's back dodge is a BACKFLIP?! Awesome! Tempted to make an Asura thief now...

This is zulfate!!

Oh, not this shit again!

Just wondering...I pre-ordered the game during greenmangaming's promotion, and I don't really want to try the beta out. Am I missing something by doing so? As in, titles, pets, etc.

Nope, there's nothing special you earn from being in the Beta, and nothing carries over. But damn, why don't you want to play in the Beta?

Yes, you can move it, but make sure the exe and the .dat are in the same folder or it will try to download everything again.

Edit: Beaten by Thanasis

So. Much. Awesome. Thanks for the translation too.

Cool, I dumped it into my root C drive and it's playing nice just fine there. My main thing is I like a clean desktop. Thanks again.

I just uploaded selected screenshots from both BWE and one of the stress tests. There's two galleries, a regular one from BWE1:

Then there's this one, with screenshots from the first stress test and BWE2 taken with the ultra-high definition feature. Each screenshot is 6720x4200!

Some screenshots really show off the amazing scenery. :)

Is that a feature of your card or the GW2 engine?

Only because I want to play a more complete product with all my friends who didn't pre-order the game. For me, half the fun is with my friends. Thanks for the answer!

Does anyone know how many character slots we'll have at default?

Not 100% sure, but it's 5 in the beta. Additional slots look like they'll cost ~$10, but obviously cash shop prices aren't finalized.

No problem, and that's actually a really good reason.

They should have narration describing each vista and it's back story.

.... okay, I kinda want this too. Maybe not for vistas, but some kind of "Lore Point" where you walk over it and it tells you a little snippet of info from Guild wars history. For example, places that tie heavily into GW1 lore.

Well, your character wont transfer over.

Personally, id simply try out the beta just to determine what class you want to play as. It would be a bit of a drag if you found out you didnt like the class that you first picked and had to re-roll. you'd either have to make up the levels on your own, or make your friends play some lowbie zone so that you can catch up

Just pick a starter zone that you and your friends dont plan on playing.

I want that as well. they should shamelessly steal Diablo 3s lore system. Having it read to you while you are playing is so much better than going through codec entries

That's a good idea, but I also won't have my new computer during the final beta weekend. :p

I'd be all for it. Just this late in the game it's impossible but later on when optimization has been sorted out, I can see it being added in a content patch.

GW2, actually. There's a keybind (unbound by default, I have mine set to the * key) that takes these mammoth pics while hiding the interface. It's currently slightly buggy with what I'm guessing are pixel shaders and stuff, which means that both water and light bloom / light rays are messed up (I have a bunch of those screenshots, that I didn't upload; a shame too, many were spectacular otherwise :/ ).

Gates of Madness for launch. Henge of Denravi for NA and Jade Sea for EU during Beta.

What was the reason for the change anyways? The only real difference seems to be that Gates of Madness is a much cooler name considering that both are medium pop servers

Part of it was that it starts with a "G". It was always the plan to play the first "G" server, and if there wasn't one available "H", then "I", etc. Also, even when we first decided on a server, it was always specifically stated it was only for beta, and our post-release server would be decided closer to release, largely because it was suspected more servers would be added as populations ramped up (though I doubt anyone suspected they would double them). Henge of Denravi was never meant to be a permanent home. But there was still talk of remaining on Henge only because it avoided people accidentally going on the wrong server because they didn't follow the thread closely enough.

So ultimately, I think the decision came down to familiar name vs. cool name.

It is a pretty cool name.

Why not wait for post-BWE3 to see what happens with other communities, and if Gates become Low or Full ? MMO-wise longterm, we'd want High IMO.

Would we though? I played some WoW on high pop servers and there were times where it was just miserable. Queues up the ass and zones just full to bursting.

Yea, id rather go to a mid pop server and avoid the possibility of queues for login and WvWvW. Plus, I really dont want to see a zone filled with tons of people. Kinda ruins it a bit for me since youre supposed to be out exploring/adventuring, and there are 200+ other people doing the same thing

As far as we know we will be the biggest guild actively rolling on GoM from the start. We don't want to purposely go to a server where 10 massive guilds are gonna roll cause we'll never get into WvW.

I'd be surprised if a server with a name as badass as Gates of Madness were to go low population soon.

Good. I don't want to be on a zerg server.

can anyone point me towards how endgame armor sets will look?

Technically speaking I'd have to show you every armor in the game. :-p

Stop thinking in the terms of there's a set of armor I HAVE to wear and start asking yourself what do I want to wear? If you find a look you like at level 5 you can keep it for the entire life of your character by transmuting the stats of other higher level items onto it.

Do note that say you're a profession that wears Heavy armor, you can only transmute Heavy armor to Heavy armor and it has to be say a chest piece and a chest piece. You can't cross match armor weight classes.

Anyways, here's a link to some dungeon armor:

Does anyone know if accounts are bound to region right now? I managed to get my friend in the UK a US key on the site but EU keys are out.

Sorry to say, but last I heard the accounts are region locked. You can still play on servers from the other region, but the accounts themselves are locked by your region.

At least that's how it works for the full game. Not positive about beta keys.

WvW got queues and might be full at first, but as with most MMOs, people quit after a few and you'd want to still have people in PVP.

Typically people quit because they feel it's not worth paying the monthly fee, in this case they don't need to outright quit, ever.

I'm definitely rolling asura at launch, don't know which class though (guardian or thief are the only ones which appeal to me).

I refuse to play an asura in the next beta (as to not spoil anything) which poses a problem. I'm going to spend the whole weekend watching people play the race that I want to play, it will be so tantalizing :P Thinking I will just skip this beta weekend, i've waited a long time so i'm sure I can wait abit longer :)
