So why did he do it before he became Batman, then, in the prison scene and in the Ra's Al Ghul training scenes?

Sounds like a stupid excuse to me. And, well, it doesn't work anyways. The only shot that works in this logic is the one where one of Falcone's dumb dudes gets dragged in the container.

Because you can't actually fight 10 on 1 in a scene. Way to hard to choreograph

Watch the sequence again. The moment those two start talking together, Nolan switches to close-ups. And you'll never have more than two characters talking at the same time in this sequence. Basically, she goes away, and then he goes to talk with Arthur. That's EXACTLY what I am talking about.

Good set designs, boring scenes.

Aren't they having a pretty emotional discussion during this scene? It's essentially the climax of their love subplot.

Good directors will typically go in close for intimate/emotional exchanges of dialogue to focus complete attention on the actors and any subtle nuances they're portraying, and to subconsciously make the viewer feel "closer" to them (by literally being closer, you figuratively feel closer).

I'd argue it would be a bad, or at the very least self-important, misguided director that would take away from that connection to show off his skills at composition.

I do think Nolan has issues with action. His fights never feel well choreographed or plotted out, but I just think this criticism in particular isn't very well placed.

What's Nolan's excuse for the same bad choreography in the stupid Inception action sequences?

Every discussion in Batman Begins is intimate, emotional, philosophical and fucking overwrought. And they're all shot in the same way.

And I'm not talking about composition skills. I'm talking about having SOME scenes in the movie where there's not only two people talking, shot in the same freaking boring style.

the point of the fight scenes was typically to show it from the villains perspective and how Batman stalks them one by one gradually making them piss their pants. I love that shift in dynamic from your bogstandard superhero fight. You don't see shit because hes a friggin Ninja

Yup, exactly. That's what Nolan said.

Is that Leo blurred in the background? :D

WHAT THE FUCK.

Troll confirmed, Jesus.

I like how someone whose argument seems to be "Batman Begins looks like it was made by someone who just came out of film school" is coming across like somebody who's still in film school (like me~).

A shot doesn't need to tell you anything, it needs to look good.

Ok as much as I think Foreign Jackass is being a bit of a jerk... no.

Yes, such arrogance. Jackass probably did film school or something and therefore thinks he knows everything about this.

Why? Because I care about film? I went to film school years ago, and I plan to follow other courses. What does that change? My comment wasn't directed against film schools, it was directed against the amateurism of Nolan's direction.

I don't think I know everything about anything. I think that Nolan's bad, and it's my opinion. Feel free to have another one if you don't actually want to argue yours. SUCH ARROGANCE TO THINK THAT A DIRECTOR ISN'T ENTERTAINING!

That couldn't be more wrong. Really. It couldn't be.

And even if it was right, the problem with BB is that it doesn't have many good looking shots.
A shot full of information, yet framed terribly or amateurish, is not good.
A shot with very little information, yet nicely framed, is good.
The subject doesn't matter, it's how the camera captures it.

Look, I don't agree with him, but can we knock it off with the increasingly personal nature of the rebukes against him?

He's got criticisms of a film, not you as human being.

I'd rather have the entirety of TDKR spoiled for me than continue reading this long and tired argument over the validity of Nolan being a good director. You have an opinion, we have a different opinion. Is it worth it to argue about it?

Just read the first 10 pages of this thread and think it's probably the best idea to just stay out of here until I see the movie. I stayed out of the last thread because the title said people were getting spoiled and thankfully I didn't venture into this one until after they had been edited out. Anyway, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that even if you go to the trouble to make separate threads for spoilers and no spoilers, somebody will be a jerk and spoil it for everyone. I feel bad for everybody who got spoiled a couple of days ago.

He admitted that he would troll Nolan dishonestly in the past to stir things up, how am I suppose to believe him now?

Hahaha. He actually studied film! By the way, I also studied engineering. Is that relevant to any discussion we're having now? Cause we might as well put all our cards on the table, you know, since it's so illuminating to know what people studied when we're discussing a fucking hollywood movie.

Nah, I didn't do it dishonestly. I'm not lying about what I think of Nolan. I just know before I say it that people are gonna take it personally and end up attacking me on personal terms. And I find that pretty revealing and funny.

Anyways, I gotta jet, got some friends coming over. Have fun! :)

It sucks but it's not the end of the world. I'm still hyped to see it and I'm not even sure if that spoiler was true. At the end of the day that single post is not going to ruin this film for me.

Fuck, he ended with a smiley face. He wins this round.

But you said this time you are being honest, so what were you doing the other times?

It changes nothing, and I don't even particularly disagree with you on many points - Nolan is a terrible action director, the TDK car chase is evidence enough of that - it's just the way you're arguing. You're being incredibly condescending and pointing to textbook "reasons why this is bad" the same way that me and several other friends of mine who took screenwriting courses went through our "Robert McKee says X, therefore Y movie's writing is bad" phase.

Your opinion isn't wrong, you're just being a bit of a posh jerk. If you stopped saying things like:

Nah, I don't know better than all of you. I know better than you, though.

You're kidding me, right? You can take any fucking Schwarzie or Stallone movie from the 80s and find a similar shot with many people running from a menace. You're telling me this is visually interesting storytelling? Come on, dude.

How and why is this impressive? Is this the first moving shot you've ever seen, or what?

I don't think I know everything about anything. I think that Nolan's bad, and it's my opinion. Feel free to have another one if you don't actually want to argue yours.

Maybe people wouldn't have such a bad reaction to you. Use your film-school knowledge to articulate your opinion, not as a baseball bat to hit everyone else with.

But you said this time you are being honest, so what were you doing the other times?
Well, maybe sometimes I'm being a bit too hard on people, like James Cameron, for instance, for whom I've got some personal hatred, and I stir shit up cause his fanboys are pretty fucking funny.

Nolan looks like he's a cool guy, though.

Look, I don't agree with him, but can we knock it off with the increasingly personal nature of the rebukes against him?

this, it's pretty funny how many of you guys act like he offended anyone of you personally, are you so lovestruck ?

In my opinion Batman Begins is also pretty boring, others think it's great.. done.

And I also have to agree that the most of the fight scenes in the Batman movies by Nolan lack of some style that fits Batman..

I really like those Movies really but you guys seem to think you have to like everything about a director or movie ..

Funny thing about this scene is that the explosions didn't go off on time but Heath as the genius he is just kept going until it finally blew.

The explosion did go off on time since it was all scripted as Noaln explains in the behind the scenes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRkKiQA4d4Mt=3m30s. Skip to around 3:30

Still takes nothing away, it's a great shot. Heath's acting may have been different in the actual take compared to rehearsals i'm not sure.

Warrior is incredible, both Edgerton and Hardy are incredible. Hardy is a beast in this, this wounded beast, especially in the last fight, this stare, this madness, gosh, this guy exudes charisma, and is one of the best actors around, incredible. Got robbed with Warrior.

My comment about him sounding like a film school student wasn't meant to be a personal attack, film school is a good thing. It was just his arrogance and flippancy just reminded me of slightly younger me when I first read Story.
