Sonic Adventure was the first Sonic game I enjoyed (actually, the only one) and completed it multiple times. Loved that temple level (DAT MUSIC!) and the later ones on Dr Eggmans ship. Always found something to come back to despite the 'Hub' in between which I didn't really enjoy.

Sadly, SA2 I did not like. It was like the equivalent of Itchy and Scratchy adding Poochie. Too many characters not needed.

Another thing could be that Sonic is one of the few non-Nintendo game franchises since the early 00's that directly caters to very young children. That also isn't, you know, a game based on a Nickelodeon show or movie or something. So, bad or good, it stays popular because it's catering to a very large and often ignored audience.

I could be wrong, but that's just one theory.

It's also probably the only platformer mascot to survive the 90's and 00's with consistent popularity through it's wildly different phases and games. As a result you have the fractured fanbase we have now. In 5 or 6 years you'll have fans that were introduced to the franchise with 06 coming on this board, recalling it fondly. I don't envy Sega in trying to think of a way to cater to everyone in this fanbase..

Sonic Generations spoiled me with being Sonic-only and having optimal 3-tier level design. I liked SA2 when I was a youngin' but I can't get excited about its rerelease.

Sega just needs to make a Chao game. Hell, make it for mobile devices as the Tamogatchi clone to conquer all Tamogatchi clones.

I think that SA2 has a lot of good tunes in it (beyond "yo I'm Knuckles" and the Tails theme and stuff like that.) I had SA2 for the Dreamcast and Gamecube. I liked it at the time. I'm just not compelled to buy a re-release. I only really liked the Sonic/Shadow levels and I did like the Knuckles/Rouge levels except for the odd time where the radar seems to mess with you and your target is hidden in some obnoxious place. Tails/Eggman levels are not fun.

Blast also had awful graphics. Looked like a donkey ate Sonic's world, then vomited it all up, and Sega designed the graphics based on how that puddle of vomit looked.

I still have my copy of Sonic Blast that I played only once that I bought back in 1996 when it first came out. It's still in the box and all pristine and minty and everything.

It played even worse than it looked.

Sonic 2 MS is a good game, and Sonic 3D Blast for the MD is decent. Sonic Blast is a completely godawful game for the Game Gear, where Sega thought it would be a good idea to have their 8-bit handheld system go for Donkey Kong Country-like graphics. Sonic Blast also had rather terrible gameplay.
