Gay and Bisexual thread |OT2|Bears and Twinks and Otters. Oh My!

It's not really a theory, per se. Data shows that for every subsequent son a mother has, his chances of being/turning out gay increase by roughly 33%. It's believed that this has to do with hormonal changes in the womb that become greater when she's carrying a boy, but girls don't seem to change anything. This is why you often see twins with one turning out gay and the other straight, despite presumably being "nurtured" the same way.

Hope that might have answered some of your questions. For what it's worth, most of the gay guys I know are firstborns, myself included. =)

It's still a theory in both senses of the word. A quick search turned up Bearman and Brückner (2008) and Francis (2008) who find extremely weak or no correlation between the two in their data analysis.

I have an older brother and sister, but of the two gay guys I knew from my high school one was a single child and the other had a sister. Human sexuality is far more complex than birth order.

I have an older brother. My cousin who is gay has an older brother. but I have a friend who is gay that is an only child. Maybe having an older brother increases the odds, but it certainly isn't the deciding factor.

P.S - I used to think you were cool. Then I saw you making fun of bagged milk in the New Canadian Money Melts thread. =(

lol sorry. I just can't help myself. Im a Western Canadian living in the East and some things I just cant rap my head around. Don't worry ill make it up to someday somehow.

There is no bagged milk in the west? :O

and bagged milks are awesome because of this

i never heard of bagged milk war O_o

Well imagine all the bag milks flying all over the place without people opening the bags. White Milk and Chocolate Milk. It was crazy but fun and the best thing was there was no mess.(most of the time)

BTW I'm not on Canada (Puerto Rico)

but the bag is actually pretty sturdy...and even if you throw it at someone the most it would do is slowly LEAK out of the hole instead of SPLASHING everyone.

Bread comes with those.

bread makes you fat

edit:

I've never even heard of bagged milk period.

You must be from Ontario then, cuz it seems like no one in Ontario I talk to realizes that bagged milk is essentially an eastern thing only (which honestly annoys me cuz Canada isnt just Ontario :P). Bags basically stop showing up once you hit Manitoba. They had bagged milk like 20-30 years ago... but it did not catch on.

Well the bagged milk we had was pretty good since there were no big messes actually. I guess it was better plastic maybe?

I have an older sister.

I have a younger brother, so I guess between this and my superior handedness, I can firmly place myself in the genetic 1%.
Superior handedness means left-handed or right-handed? I hope it's the first one :P
Or are you mixed-handed.

There is no bagged milk in the west? :O

We had bagged milk when I was a kid, but for few years it has been replaced with boxed milk or bottled one. Nowadays usually only soured milk is sold in bags.

It looks like Wikipedia has a page on this, actually. It says "The fraternal birth order effect is the strongest known biodemographic predictor of sexual orientation." It mentions those studies as contrary evidence, but mentions a some that support the data too.

Yes, human sexuality is quite complicated. In all likelihood, homosexuality is probably determined by a combination of biological, social, genetic, developmental, and circumstantial (having older brothers, for instance) factors, among others. Because there are so many variables to account for, it will take quite some time before scientists are able to determine how large a role each factor plays in determining sexuality. That said, today's scientific community hasn't found a singular, provable factor of homosexuality prediction that is larger than the birth order effect. It should be noted, however, that it only accounts for 15% of homosexuality. The remaining 85%...to be continued!

Wikipedia article on fraternal birth order and sexual orientation

I'm the oldest one in my house so the theory is certainly not true in all cases.

Oh and in my country Colombia milk is also bagged, you can find it in boxes as well but the fresh milk always comes in bags.

Hijacking this conversation, but I found 1Q84's characters a bit boring, and all of their quirks (the male character's memory of his mother, Aomame's thing for old, balding men) were ridiculous, and they follow in the Murakami tradition of following a bizarre dream logic. I've only read and finished Sputnik Sweetheart, and listened to a bit of Kafka on the Shore (which was helped tremendously by having a full cast production), and couldn't get into The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I got 150 pages or so into 1Q84 before needing to give it back to the library, and considering how massive the book is, that's only a small dent. Does it get better? I liked the plot just fine, but the characters did nothing for me.

Wind-Up does take awhile to warm up. I really loved it by the end, but early on it was a bit plodding.

And maybe Murakami isn't for you? Characters hardly even register as reasons I like Murakami novels, honestly. I would imagine you're right that they have more personality on an audiobook, but they definitely do seem sort of flat and affectless on the page. I like his novels more for the way I get lost in the dream-logic of the novels that somehow makes some intuitive sense to me. I'm not really sure I could tell you too much about the plots of them beyond the bare bones, though.

If you are still are interested in trying more, the closest thing to a more grounded Murakami novel is Norwegian Wood, probably, and it is a lot of peoples' favorite of his.

Thought I'd pop in and say hi. It's been a while (last thread!). Anyway, hope you're all well and congrats Mumei on your mod status.

Thanks~

Yes.

Well.

Oops. :x

Left, of course! I can't believe you'd even suggest otherwise.

Well, being mixed-handed is superior than being just left-handed (or just right-handed) ;)
Anyway, left-hand high five! :D

I think I read a study that homosexuals are more likely being left-handed than heterosexuals. I wonder how true that is.

don't suggest such a crazy idea, I want to like all authors. :(

It's funny that the books' logic is what bothers me, as I'm the kind of person who is generally brain-dead while reading and can go along with the most stupid twists and blatantly obvious reveals, but I'm just never able to believe in his characters' special kind of logic. It's good to hear somebody else say that what they enjoy about the books is the atmosphere, because while I enjoyed Sputnik, I don't remember what happens nor who the characters were. Maybe I'm just more open to his books when they're shorter, and Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and 1Q84 were just too daunting. I got ten pages into Wind-Up Bird and put it down because I couldn't believe how apathetic the main character was to his wife's disappearance (if I'm remembering it correctly). I suppose that probably isn't the most fair grounds to dismiss a book, haha.

I'll give Norwegian Wood a try then. I'd like to become more well-read this summer, so that's probably a better start than my previous plan of checking out Pale Fire and The Count of Monte Cristo and hoping to dive in.

Being mixed-handed just makes you a filthy traitor. But a left-handed high five nonetheless!

I read a book a few years ago about handedness that claimed that left-handed people were significantly less likely to be gay, while the reverse is true in women. It's an old book though, so I have no idea how accurate its findings are today.

in elementary we used to get bagged milk then they stopped and went with the cartons. (US)
Yeah around here too (Puerto Rico in my case), was fun. Then chocolate milk in bags too. Though some used them as "bombs". :p

Also got juice in small bags too, but it sometimes came...fermented, so it smell and tasted like wine. We sometimes buried them to see how it looked/tasted weeks later. XD

Hey gurls, just got back from Softcore Porn on the Big Screen Magic Mike: It was fun. But not enough Matt Bomer. For $10.50 I'm not too disappointed with the dance numbers and seeing Matt's ass (granted only in like two scenes) and the other guy's asses and the dance numbers. But yeah... Matt being the draw isn't there. :(

Went with a girl friend (no, not a "girlfriend" a girl friend) that already saw it and poked me and made fun of me for having a huge crush on Matt Bomer (but didn't have a problem with yelling out for Mike/Chris what'shisface). I think there was only like...4 other guys in there. Two being in an obvious stereotypical (read: feminine) gay couple. The other two were with their girlfriend/wife (and the dude with the girlfriend was fiiiiiiiine *UNF*) but I dunno their reaction. It seems the girls enjoyed it and minus missing the opening 10 minutes since the caption glasses weren't working I watched it.

There's a few plotholes in the story though: Like
Why did "Mike" only have $13K in savings over... ~10(?) years of stripping? For as much as the movie talked about them making money, it seems he didn't really make too much cash doing this or his expenses were WAYYYYY high for him to even be thinking of doing a custom furniture job.

Fake spoiler:
Yes, I spent $10.50 matinee to see Matt Bomer's ass and chest. No, I don't want to hear about it, shut up. :|

...

Further fake spoiler:
I'll totally buy it on Blu-ray and stuff it in a closet where most people can't see it and I can watch it on my own time. High-def Matt Bomer's ass in freeze-frame? YES PLZ.

OMG that Grape Juice was great XD

Is the younger older brother the gay one? Or the eldest and you?

I always thought it would be weird to have a family where every child was gay. Dem odds.
I went to school with a guy that was extremely feminine and his sister was extremely masculine... I often see them at gay gatherings, I don't think they have any other siblings... what are the odds?

My brother is also gay, it has been very rough for my dad, who is ultra-conservative, although not religious thankfully.

It's funny, because despite his ostensible apathy about it, he seems awfully invested in figuring out what happened. I find that with Murakami books, I can't just put them down and come back to them later. There's this sense of inertia and internal logic in them that sort of makes sense while you're reading them, but when you try to think about it doesn't make as much sense. I think that Wind-Up does get a lot better (and actually has some of his more interesting and memorable characters; I should probably amend to say that while his narrators are generally same-same, his secondary characters are more interesting).

I'll give Norwegian Wood a try then. I'd like to become more well-read this summer, so that's probably a better start than my previous plan of checking out Pale Fire and The Count of Monte Cristo and hoping to dive in.

Oh, jeez.

Pale Fire was my favorite book I read last year, and one of my favorite ever, and The Count of Monte Cristo was my Favorite Book Ever for awhile, and it is still near the very top. Have you read any other Nabokov?

Norwegian Wood is one of my favorites as well, though I would definitely put those two above it.

Was it a shock when you found out your brother was also gay. OR did you always know and suspect. Was it helpful you shared that in common since your dad is the way he is?

I honestly didn't like it, which well says a lot, I didn't want him to be gay, and I'm still a bit uncomfortable with it, which is likely some internalized homophobia I need to deal with.

It didn't help my brother was too direct about it, almost defying my dad, I sometimes think he is just pretending to piss of my dad, but then I realize is my own repressed wish as well.

What the hell? I have never seen milk in anything other than jugs and cartons.

Regarding the gay siblings. I am the second oldest son out of four boys and I am the only gay one. My friend is the only boy in his family and the oldest sibling and he is gay.

BeesEight, where were you and what were you doing when that picture was taken?

Yeah, was asked before but I don't mind answering again. Was hiking the #2 trail along the Cinque Terre coast in Italy. Really beautiful but disgustingly hot.

(which honestly annoys me cuz Canada isnt just Ontario :P).

Do not believe his lies!

Ah, yeah, there we go. I can see it being the strongest predictor since the other suggested predictors are pretty damn spotty (longer ring finger than index finger etc...). As for what this actually means for sexuality, however, is still being investigated. I don't know, usually when I hear this explanation come up it often feels like people think this is an explanation for all homosexuality or that it suggests we have a good grasp on what affects human sexuality in general when that isn't really the case either way.

The odds of multiple gay siblings always surprises me. Like, sure it could happen, but it seems so... un-probable. Good thing my brother isn't gay too - my dad would have a heart attack. Two times. Plus I kinda like that I'm unique.

Shocking. Once you go bag you never go back.

I love how anytime bagged milk is mentioned, GAF just sidelines and has to argue about it.

You're a unique snowflake... just like the rest of us. ;)

Though multiple gay siblings has always struck me as odd as well. That's really betting against the odds.

I am surprised some of you guys haven`t heard of bagged milk. It is very common where I live. hell. I grew up with bagged milk. I still get it that way sometimes. I Know it might not be the most common form factor, but I thought everyone knew about it. One does learn something everything day after all :P

I avoid most gaf-arguments i see: circumcision, religion, politics, mma (that thread sucks).

Bout the only thing I'll engage in is heated bagged milk discussions. It makes me want to poke a hole in every bag i see.

And I don't even drink milk.
